Chair Appointed to the Board of West College Scotland

The Minister for Further Education, Higher Education and Science, Richard Lochhead MSP, today announced the appointment of Dr Waiyin Hatton as Chair of the Board of West College Scotland.

Mr Lochhead said

“I am pleased to appoint Dr Waiyin Hatton as Chair of West College Scotland. Dr Hatton brings with her a wealth of experience which I am sure will prove invaluable in her new role.  Colleges are key to our ambitions in widening access to further and higher education, enabling successful learners and generating a skilled and productive workforce for our economy.  Waiyin will play her part in promoting this agenda locally and nationally across the wider college network.”

CHAIR

Dr Waiyin Hatton is a firm believer in life-long learning and a beneficiary of formal education and continued professional development throughout her career.

Passionate about unleashing talents, Waiyin set up her own consultancy, Wai Beyond, in 2012 to inspire and nurture greatness in people, teams and organisations, delivering leadership development; coaching and Board development; acting as ‘Business Mentor’; and being a role model to women in leadership.

Prior to this, she has had extensive leadership across the public and not-for-profit sectors in health care in England, Scotland and Wales. Her last post was that of Chief Executive of NHS Ayrshire and Arran, describing her role as ‘creating an environment to succeed’.

A former karate international medallist, she co-founded Ayrshire Sportsability; and puts back in the community as she currently Chair of Action Against Stalking and Director of the Scottish Chamber of Commerce.

Waiyin was awarded Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow in 2015 for her contribution to the community; and has been recognised by the Association of Scottish Business Women, winning the Best Business Charity Award in 2015 and awarded Woman of Inspiration in 2014.

APPOINTMENT

This appointment will be for four years and will run from 3 March 2020 to

2 March 2024.

This appointment is regulated by the Ethical Standards Commissioner.

REMUNERATION

This appointment is part-time and attracts a remuneration of £265 per day for a time commitment of two days per week.

OTHER MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENTS

Dr Hatton does not hold any other public appointments.

POLITICAL ACTIVITY

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.

Dr Hatton has had no political activity within the last five years.

BACKGROUND

West College Scotland serves 4 local authority areas in the West of Scotland, including Renfrewshire Council, Inverclyde Council, West Dunbartonshire Council and East Renfrewshire Council.  It has a student population of 22,000, 1,200 staff and a turnover of £67 million.

Working in partnership with employers and other stakeholders to focus on providing opportunities which meet demand in key industry sectors in the region and beyond, the College ensures that its students develop the right skills and positive attitudes to support local, regional and national workforce needs, and plays a key role in helping to support regional economic development.
