Presidential Observations

President Lorie noted that it was another nice day on the Island but that we should remember others in BC who are facing some serious challenges.

She also admitted that she went cruising around the Broken Island earlier this week.

FOUNDATION

$95 donated to the Rotary Foundation this week. THANK-YOU!

Sergeant-at-Arms

The Sgt this morning was Ralph. Randy was happy that Bob didn’t giggle [during the National Anthem]. Don W noted the good turnout this morning. Jan is worth talking to – according to Ralph. Tessa went to Saltspring Island. Jeff “failed” at O Canada … but had a good excuse. Don T has some good news. Don C’s name tag is still at home. Harry went to a blacksmithing convention. Dale happy to see a “good Saskatchewan girl” at our podium. James had nothing to say. Barry enjoyed an excellent production in Chemainus. Bob M is glad that football is underway and he was the lucky winner!!

Breakfast at the 7-10 Club

Next breakfast – Saturday, July 22nd.

News, Updates & Reminders

July 25th – visit by DG Tom Carroll. A 5-Club BBQ at the Nanaimo Golf Club. It would be great to have a good turnout from our Club. Due to the space limitations at the Golf Club, this event is for Rotarians only; i.e. no spouses, friends or guests.

July 27th – no weekly meeting – so come out and welcome DG Tom on the 25th – Tuesday evening at the Nanaimo Golf Club.

September 7th – 10th. We will be hosting 12 Rotarians from New Zealand on a Rotary Friendship Exchange. James has put together a program to keep them busy, learning about our community. Thanks to those members of the Club who have stepped forward to host the visitors.

NOTICE OF MOTION. Proposed that we donate $2,500, from Gaming Funds, to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Vancouver Island towards their “Game On” program at Georgia Avenue Community School.

Community Service

We donated $1,000 to the Mid-Island Abilities and Independent Living Society – for their assisted living program…helping seniors with mobility issues…to get them out-and-about, interacting with other people.

Rotary Minute

Don C reminisced about a busy day as the Watch Commander in the RCMP Detachment in Sherwood Park, AB some years ago – and how a BIG smile on a small boy changed his day! (.

Youth Exchange Update

Grace Bradley is one of our Outbound Exchange Students this year – very excited about going to Narvik in Norway. She leaves in August!

Education and Aspengrove School

Joanne Kingstone, an energetic lady who has just finished her first year as the Principal at Aspengrove School, talked to us a good bit about education. At ‘work’ she remains engaged with her students – you can always learn something from young people.

According to Joanne, there are 3 pillars to a good educational experience:

□ Education is about connectivity. Relationships between students, parents and school leaders.

□ Education is dynamic … education occurs when and where it happens. Everywhere and all the time.

□ Education is the source of power. It builds confidence.

There were 312 students at Aspengrove last year – one class each of K-12 – based on the International Baccalaureate Program. 14 graduated this year, eight of them earning significant scholarships.

Through a Spirit of Inquiry, Aspengrove School inspires its community to act confidently as compassionate, knowledgeable and principled global citizens:

□ To respect the unique qualities of others;

□ To challenge the creative mind;

□ To pursue their passions; and

□ To develop critical innovative thinking.

A Rotarian thinking great thoughts…

……………………………………………………………………………………….

[pic]You should see my desk…

I was quietly fuming in the six-item express lane at the store the other day.

Completely ignoring the sign, the person ahead of me had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries.

Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the customer to come forward, looked into the cart, and asked sweetly, "So which six items would you like to buy?"

(Wouldn't it be great if that happened more often?)

------------------------------ ------------------------------  Because they had no reservations at a busy restaurant, an elderly gentleman and his wife were told there would be a 45-minute wait for a table.

“Young man, we're both 90 years old," the husband said. "We may not have 45 minutes."

They were seated immediately.

AND A FEW FINAL QUESTIONS

Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?

Why do doctors leave the room while you change?

They're going to see you naked anyway...
