Carty Family of Endowments

Edward Bower Carty (1917 - 2001)

E. Bower Carty rounded out a lifetime of generosity by donating his estate, valued at more than $6 million, to Carleton University. He donated to Carleton out of a strong sense of community and a desire that his money should make a difference to young people. His many contributions to the university over the course of more than 30 years included generous bursary awards and countless donations. He was honoured in the winter of 2000 with the Philanthropist of the Year award at the sixth annual Ottawa-Carleton Philanthropy Awards dinner.

Endowment Matching

In September 2003, authorization was granted to Development and Alumni to utilize an unassigned portion of the interest generated from the Carty endowment. These funds are being used to match the contributions of donors who wish to endow new graduate or undergraduate scholarships at Carleton University.

Utilizing the Carty endowment funds in this manner is compatible with the University’s strategic goal of becoming the best comprehensive university in Canada within the next 5 to 10 years. It also allows Carleton to improve its ability to attract the best and brightest students and to create a significant number of new endowments, a strategic priority for the institution.

Each scholarship created and matched through the use of the Carty endowment will be recognized as part of the Carty Family of Endowments in all communications with donors, recipients, and the general public. This umbrella grouping of awards and endowments will ensure that the Carty legacy remains an important part of Carleton University.
