VISITORS AND GUESTS

Joining us for breakfast were Bob and Gracie Alward - Nanaimo Diamonds fastball team, Troy deJong – Price’s Alarms, James Williams and Rotarians Denise Larson and John Salem.

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES

On July 29th, Jan & Tom are celebrating their 14th

wedding anniversary. We surprised Gracie Alward with our Rotary birthday wishes and our singing.

CLUB PRESIDENT BARRY SPARKES

Warm welcome from Barry and thank-you’s to everyone for your Rotary participation. Last week meeting with Nanaimo Daybreak was a good event. Lessons were learned from the Silly Boat competition. Everyone asked to please sign up for club committees. Barry knew - July 25th is National chili dog day!

‘There are wooden ships and steam ships that sail the seas. The best ships are friendships, may they always be.’

FOUNDATION

$ 115 contributed to the Rotary Foundation. Many thanks! Greg Devenish was the lucky holder of the draw for $ 17.

Please note, all contributions will go the Annual Fund unless you direct Barry otherwise.

SERGEANT AT ARMS – DAVID LOBAY

Happy bucks, sad bucks – as always, this part of our meeting was interesting & entertaining. So,

Jamal had a happy buck for the fresh figs delivered to his door by Michael Ribicic. Greg’s

daughter is visiting and this week-end she is singing at The Vault. Week-end past, Rachel’s kettle bell team raised $ 160 for Big Brothers/Big Sisters. From Steve, a happy dollar and a big thank-you to Rachel. Dale gave a plug for Bard on the Beach in Kitsilano. Excellent entertainment! Sad buck from Tess – new puppy is very needy. Sheila very happy to have family visiting. Just home, Mike Walker had a beautiful 17 day holiday. Part of the holiday included watching Darby’s Gymnaestrada team perform in Austria. John Salem, happy to join us – looking forward to more all club fellowship events. For the fall, Steve is working on a youth mental health awareness project and Jodie is recruiting volunteers for the Terry Fox run. $20 happy dollars from Kim East. She was mightily impressed with the energy and enthusiasm at our July 11th club meeting. Barry noted that he and Randy were thrilled that today’s power point worked. Well done guys! $ 290 in the pot, Lee Rowley draw did not produce a joker.

‘TOGETHER, LET’S DO GREAT THINGS’

Within our Club, with his community activities, with his employer, private Wealth group manager Don Tamelin lives and breathes this Coastal Community Credit Union (CC) tag line.

CC has been part of the fabric of Vancouver Island for over 70 years. With over 100,000 members, they are the largest credit union based on Vancouver Island. Their 600 + employees provide banking, insurance and wealth management services. CC is healthy and strong with a 2.6 billion dollar balance sheet and a total of $ 3.3 billion assets under management.

Don addressed some complexities in today’s business world. Aging baby boomers, ever increasing paperless record keeping, constant cyber space attacks, money laundering and continuous change at WARP speed are challenging issues requiring unique solutions. CC has embraced the development of organizational leadership through the BC credit unions Young Leaders’ network. The goal of the network is to help enrich, engage and inspire under 40 employees.

Making a visible and meaningful difference is a big part of CC. Each year, they invest upwards of half a million dollars into Island communities. In addition, employees donate time, leadership and expertise in support of local community groups that they are passionate about. As an active member of our club, we appreciate Don’s leadership and enthusiasm with every project he undertakes.

ROTARY ADVENTURES IN CITIZENSHIP

OTTAWA 2019

Greg shared with club members, a lovely email from our program participant, Grayson Mitchell. “I want to thank you greatly for this opportunity. I do hope your club continues to offer this next year to another student.” Earlier this month, Grayson was accepted into the 6 month katimavik program in Moncton.

ROTARY MINUTE – DAVID LOBAY

From the August edition of the Rotarian, David told us about evolution in the life of Alan Evans.

In 2002, after 25 years of homelessness, drug addiction and time in prison, Alan was desperate and contemplating suicide. Instead, he decided to get arrested again. When caught with his fake checks, the police officer urged Evans to get help. Evans took the advice and got clean.

In 2004, Alan started Thugz Off Drugz, a non-profit offering services to ex-convicts struggling with homelessness and addiction. Moving forward and with ever changing economic times and hugely changing demographic needs, in 2008 Evans recognized the need to make changes to the program. Today Helping Hands operates 11 facilities with more than 200 beds in four Oregon counties.

In 2008 Helping Hands board member and Rotarian, Mike Caruso invited Evans to a District conference. At the conference, Evans saw a video about polio eradication and decided to join Rotary. “I wanted to be like that. I had spent my life surviving and wanting to change, and I didn’t realize that change happens when we give.”

This June, Alan finished a stint as club president “When I first joined Rotary, I was scared to death. I didn’t ever think I would be accepted by this group of people. I was wrong. I was welcomed with open arms, and this is my family now.”

FUN STUFF

In a hurry…A woman and her husband interrupted their vacation to go to the dentist. “I want a tooth pulled, and I don’t want Novacaine because I am in a big hurry. Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we’ll be on our way.”

The dentist was quite impressed. “You’re certainly a courageous woman,’ he said. “Which tooth is it?”

The woman turned to her husband and said, “Show him your tooth, dear.”[pic][pic]
