Cellular Respiration Overview and Mitochondria

Objectives: ? Describe cellular respiration. ? Discuss the importance of cellular

respiration in organisms. ? Draw and label a mitochondrion.

Respiration

? Release chemical energy from food (sugars and other carbonbased molecules) to make ATP

? ATP is the direct source of energy for living cells

? 2 types of respiration:

1. Aerobic ? requires oxygen

? Gives the most ATP per molecule

? Ex ? cellular respiration

2. Anaerobic ? no oxygen

?

Very little ATP produced per

molecule

?

Ex - fermentation

Cellular Respiration

? Process carried out by ALL eukaryotes (plant and animal)

? 3 Main Stages:

? Glycolysis ? Kreb's Cycle (also called Citric Acid Cycle) ? Electron Transport Chain (ETC)

? Overall Equation:

? C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy

? Maximum of 38 ATP molecules of ATP for 1 glucose

? Occurs MOSTLY in the mitochondria

Mitochondrion

Mitochondria ? Double membrane structure ? Inner membrane is highly folded ? Folds = cristae ? Fluid inside cristae is the mitochondrial matrix ? Contains it's own DNA ? Endosymbiont theory ? proteobacteria were ingested by another cell and avoided digestion to form a symbiotic (both benefit) relationship

Check for Understanding # 6 (p.9)

1. What is an aerobic process? 2. What are the overall reactants of

cellular respiration? 3. What are the overall products of

cellular respiration? 4. What is the inner membrane of

the mitochondria called?
