This topic will be discussed again at the April 10 Board meeting. 10.ACTIONA. Discussion and possible action regarding a request for approval of Paxton Patterson Action LABS/Electives and Enrichments at Bradshaw Mountain and Glassford Hill Middle Schools Director Mariela Bean, BMMS Principal Buchholtz, and GHMS Principal Matteson offered the following information:The high school preparation that takes place in the middle grades is critical to the success of students. Research indicates that strong educational practices and relevant curriculum do more to improve middle school test scores than school structure and grade configurations. The same research points out that students who are not on a college-ready track by the ninth grade, have a low chance of getting on one in the subsequent educational years. (EdSource: Stanford University, December 2010). Education researchers have also documented the changes in attitudes and the motivation as children enter adolescence, changes that can be “exacerbated by the absence of high-interest, engaging middle-school curricula.” (Education Next: Stuck in the Middle, fall, 2010). Our middle schools are making a concerted effort to address their student academic challenges and create a learning environment that provides both rigor and high-energy relevancy to students in grades seven and eight. They also recognize the importance of providing HUSD students a choice. Their efforts would be substantially supported by expanding elective programs at GHMS and BMMS to include the Paxton/Patterson Action LABS.The Paxton/Patterson LABS consist of Instructional Units that examine the five technological areas of study aligned to the Standards for Technology Literacy (STL).? These include communication, transportation, manufacturing, production, and bio-related technology. The learning fulfills six defined learning objectives, delivered through interactive, computer-based multimedia.? In addition, each unit contains a variety of hands-on activities, literacy activities, computer software exploration and digital video lesson material.? All the units are directly aligned with, and provide direct support to, national standards. The modules provide a superb model of academic integration in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). The instructional units for Glassford Hill and Bradshaw Mountain Middle Schools would be as follows:Glassford Hill Middle SchoolBradshaw Mtn. Middle SchoolAlternative EnergyAlternative EnergyComputer Aided Drafting (CAD)????Biomedical EngineeringComputer Graphics & Animation?????Biotechnology R&DDigital MusicDigital MusicForensic ScienceForensicsEnergy and Power??????????????????????????????Environment & EcologyFlight TechnologyFlight TechnologyLaserLaserRoboticsRoboticsStructural EngineeringSports MedicineVideo ProductionVideo ProductionVirtual ArchitectureVeterinary MedicineThe Paxton-Patterson Labs were developed using the Standards for Technological Literacy; the National Science Education Standards; the Common Core science, math and language arts standards; SCANS; research based on initiatives for educational improvement from the National Science Foundation and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; and guidelines from the No Child Left Behind Act.? Every test question and every grading rubric element in each of the instructional units is correlated to one or more of the standards.? The instructional modules meet 95.8% of the National Science Education Standards for middle schools.A team from HUSD visited schools in the valley, and consulted other districts that have implemented the LABS. The program was first aligned to common core, then to Arizona standards. The high school staff was involved in the process; they are excited at how the program will bolster what the high school is offering. Ms. Damschroder was concerned about implementation; with a cost of $172,000 she wants to be sure that it is done correctly. She strongly recommended that a District tech person be sent with the training team to the headquarters in North Carolina, and that the training be completed prior to the start of school. She also recommended assigning a lead person over the entire program; a compensated department head that would cover both schools, including the tracking of equipment. Ms. Bean stated that Patrick Keeling, Lead IS Technician, will be with the technicians when they install the equipment. Ms. Bean explained that most of the cost is one time. Considering the life of a computer, some may occasionally have to be replaced. If a different teacher is assigned the following year, that person will require training. Principal Matteson commented that the consumable parts would be covered by class fees. Principal Buchholtz added that program revisions and enhancements are included in the initial cost. Gary Marks moved to approve the new elective classes as listed for Glassford Hill Middle School and Bradshaw Mountain Middle School. Carm Staker seconded and the motion carried unanimously. B. Discussion and possible action regarding a request for approval of an intergovernmental agreement (IGA) with Yavapai College whereby student nurses may receive on-site training under the direction of HUSD school nursesOccasionally, student nurses from Yavapai College observe, and receive on-site training from HUSD school nurses. This is often the only exposure to pediatrics within their nursing rotation and training.Legal counsel for both HUSD and Yavapai College has approved the intergovernmental agreement for Yavapai College student nurses to visit our schools. As stated in the IGA, any care given to HUSD students or staff will be under the direct supervision of a District nurse.Ms. Damschroder commented that a statement must be added to the student emergency medical information form, where the parent gives consent for their student to be seen by a student nurse. Rich Adler moved to approve the IGA with Yavapai College for student nurses to observe, and receive on-site training from HUSD school nurses. Gary Marks seconded and the motion carried unanimously.C.Discussion and possible action regarding suggested changes to the Arizona School Boards Association’s 2013 Political Agenda There were no suggested changes. No action was taken.D.Discussion and possible action regarding the selection of a Board delegate and alternate to attend the ASBA Delegate Assembly in June, 2012 Richard Adler volunteered to be the delegate and Carm Staker volunteered to be the alternate. Shelly Damschroder moved to approve the selection of Richard Adler as delegate and Carm Staker as alternate to represent our Board at the Delegate Assembly in June, 2012. Gary Marks seconded and the motion carried unanimously.E.Discussion and possible action to temporarily suspend the date requirement of the Superintendent’s annual evaluation as stated in Policy CBI (Evaluation of the Superintendent) from not later than April 8 to a date later in April, 2012 (refer to Policy BGF – Suspension/Repeal of Policy)It was recommended that the date requirement in Policy CBI – Evaluation of the Superintendent be temporarily suspended so that an executive session for the Superintendent’s evaluation may be held at a meeting later in April, 2012. Gary Marks moved to temporarily suspend the date requirement in Policy CBI – Evaluation of the Superintendent from not later than April 8 to a meeting later in April, 2012. Richard Adler seconded and the motion carried unanimously. 12.ANNOUNCEMENTSA.
