A Message from the

General Manager

African -American History Month

I n his declaration of February as African-American History Month, our President called on all Americans to reflect on the African-Americans who "through toil and struggle with courageous actions have broken barriers and made America a better place to live." This month our schedule includes specials that explore local and national African-American experiences that have required political toil and

struggle, inspired artistic expression and made America a better place. Vegas PBS is

pleased to highlight these impactful stories and hope you will find them engaging and

inspiring.

Three episodes of American Masters plus several documentaries and performances

review the ability of entertainers, film makers and artists to overcome racial divides.

We lead with the story of a Las Vegas legend in Sammy Davis Jr.: I've Gotta Be Me.

The complicated history of the

" American South is revealed through

...our schedule includes

its music in the life of a famous country music star in Charlie Pride: I'm

specials that explore local

Just Me. We also explore the life and and national African-

work of "A Raisin in the Sun" playwright in Lorraine Hansberry. Live

American experiences..."

from Lincoln Center: Pipeline fea-

tures Dominique Morisseau's riveting new play that follows an inner-city teacher who

is desperate to give her son opportunities her students may never experience. A popu-

lar blues artist and hip-hop supergroup entertain us on Austin City Limits: Buddy

Guy/August Greene.

The documentary Hale County This Morning, This Evening offers a lyrical take on

portraiture and questions the frameworks that have characterized the presentation of

African-Americans in film. Independent Lens: Black Memorabilia investigates the

market and collectors of racist antiques and a Black artist working to reclaim these

depictions.

Locally, we explore the momentous events that defined African-American history in

Southern Nevada with Vegas PBS' documentary African Americans: The Las Vegas

Experience. The documentary tells the rich history of African-Americans in the city.

Firsthand accounts, archival footage and detailed recreations put Las Vegas' Civil

Rights era in context, letting viewers in on this fundamental piece of our local identity.

Broadway in the Hood: An artScene Special explores the role of performance art to

motivate and inspire a community in performance at the West Las Vegas Library.

Vegas PBS seeks to serve all viewers in our region with programming that educates

and entertains. Victoria on Masterpiece, the life of Roman Emperor Nero, secrets of

Egyptian pyramids, living volcanoes, arctic wolves, Vikings, a new Pinkalicious and

Peterrific series for kids and some great cooking recipes add to the spice and diversi-

ty of the February programming your membership makes possible.

COVER STORY

The Royal Treatment

Sundays in February

This month we have a fabulous regal lineup of royal programming featuring stories of the British monarchy.

Victoria Season 3

on Masterpiece

Sponsored by: Janice Allen

Sundays at 9 p.m.

The new season of this captivating drama

continues with the story of Victoria's rule over

the largest empire the world has ever known.

The young Queen is facing a crisis that threat-

ens to end her reign, chiefly the Revolutions

of 1848, when the downtrodden throughout

Europe begin agitating for the overthrow of

aristocratic rule.

In England, this discontent leads to

Chartism, a set of demands for universal male

suffrage, the secret ballot, equal representa-

tion for voters and other reforms that were

considered radical by leading political figures

during Victoria's reign. As with many cru-

sades, passions are aroused on both sides --

sometimes violently. At the time, who knew if

events might turn out like the French

Revolution, which resorted to widespread use

of the guillotine?

tures of the Royal family are made public.

February 24 Albert and Palmerston put

their reputations on the line, and Victoria must fight against her better judgement to decide where to place her allegiance.

March 3 (season finale) The world's eyes are

on the Great Exhibition and the Royal couple. Does triumph or failure beckon? Each week's new episode will encore the following Sunday at 8 p.m.

Victoria & Albert: The Wedding

Sunday, February 3 from 10 p.m. - Midnight

This entertaining two-part series provides an insider's look into the elaborate planning that went into one of the most famous weddings of all time: the romantic 1840 union of Queen Victoria and her consort Prince Albert. With the help of a team of experts, popular Royal historian Lucy Worsley oversees the meticulous recreation of the most important elements of the wedding celebration, scouring history books, archives, newspapers and even Victoria's own diaries for details.

Lucy is joined by food historian Annie Gray, clothing expert Harriet Waterhouse, military historian Jasdeep Singh and more. From the bouquet and the beautifully tiered cake to the music for the ceremony and the wedding gown
