A Message from the

Partners in Storytelling

A s a public service television company, part of the Vegas PBS mission is to use television to extend and amplify the effectiveness of organizations seeking to advance our region. This month, we are partnering with several community organizations to help tell the story of Southern Nevada

and create a dialogue around the important issues facing our community.

Understanding the Opioid Epidemic traces the history of the opioid crisis and

explores possible solutions. With grant funding from Anthem BlueCross BlueShield and

in partnership with the College of Southern Nevada and the Clark County Medical

Society, Vegas PBS will host a preview screening of the film and a panel discussion led

by Dr. Jerry Reeves of HealthInsight. Visit to RSVP for the January 11

screening and tune in to Vegas PBS Channel 10 on Wednesday, January 17 at 10 p.m.

to watch the complete documentary, followed by FRONTLINE: Chasing Heroin.

The 17th Annual Las Vegas Jewish Film Festival is taking place January 13-28, pro-

viding insights into Jewish identity, history and culture. Vegas PBS is sponsoring the

opening night screening of Sammy Davis Jr: I've Gotta Be Me. This American Masters

documentary examines Davis' vast talent and his journey for identity through the shift-

ing tides of civil rights and racial progress. Visit for details.

Last year, Vegas PBS partnered with UNLV Libraries to bring viewers African

Americans: The Las Vegas Experience, a documentary on the African American expe-

rience in Las Vegas during the Civil Rights era. On Wednesday, January 17, we will

release a robust educational multi-media product based on the program. In coopera-

tion with the Equity and Diversity Education Department, Clark County School District

teachers developed curriculum for state mandated Nevada History courses using video

from the program. These resources are available online and on-demand for immediate

classroom, home school, community and/or personal education. Funding for this proj-

ect was provided in part by grants through the Institute of Museum and Library

Services and The Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial.

On Friday, January 19, Vegas PBS will host its fourth Veterans Coffee and

Conversations event for veterans and their families. Vegas PBS began this monthly con-

versation series by inviting feedback on Ken Burns' The Vietnam War and continues to

provide an open forum for discussion about timely topics of concern to veterans.

Vegas PBS' community health outreach service, the Desert Meadows Area Health

Education Center (AHEC), will host a Clark County Medical Society Continuing Medical

Education (CME) workshop on suicide prevention on Tuesday, January 23. Desert

Meadows AHEC's community engagement initiatives include providing quality contin-

uing education for healthcare professionals and fostering educational interactions

between medical professionals and community members.

Your generous membership support helps fund these important documentaries, and

our strong community partnerships allow us to leverage your support into expanded

educational opportunities that go beyond the broadcast. As we begin this new year,

we thank you for your support and hope you'll join us for these and other community

education events throughout the year.
