|OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB: |

| |

|To provide a nursing-specific contribution to research strategy development, education and nursing practice development at the University of Limerick |

|(UL) and University of Limerick Hospitals (UL Hospitals). |

|DESCRIPTION: |

| |

|This post is a joint initiative between UL and UL Hospitals. While working at UL Hospitals the post holder will report to the UL Hospitals Director of |

|Nursing and will work in partnership with all relevant stakeholders. |

| |

|Within the University the post holder will report to the Head of the UL Department of |

|Nursing and Midwifery. The post holder will be an academic appointee of the UL Department of Nursing and Midwifery. |

| |

|The Clinical chair will contribute to the clinical governance structure and mechanism of UL Hospitals and academic decision-making processes of the |

|University. |

| |

|Within the organisational structure of the UL Hospitals, the post holder will work within a professional clinical environment to lead and develop |

|clinical research and practice in nursing, including its design and conduct, as well as its application in nursing practice development. |

| |

|The post holder will contribute to and lead on achieving agreed research priority objectives of the two employing organisations by engaging in |

|scholarly activity through research, publications and teaching. |

| |

|Principal Duties and Responsibilities of the Post: |

| |

|Academic and Clinical Leadership |

|The post holder will: |

| |

|Provide advice, support and leadership to nursing leaders in UL Hospitals about research that will inform the development of a best practice culture, |

|providing an environment in which key national healthcare policy objectives can be realised e.g. the implementation of the HSE’s clinical programmes / |

|DOH Policy Documents will provide rich empirical data for nursing to drive excellence in patient care and to promote clinical research in action. |

| |

|Provide leadership in nursing research, education and nursing policy and practice developments across the UL Hospitals, community and the University |

| |

|Contribute to capacity-building in research and practice development in the |

|academic and clinical nursing contexts |

| |

|Support change in work practice and education to prepare nurses to expand their practice in line with UL Hospitals and national policy priorities. |

| |

|Collaborative Working |

|The post holder will; |

| |

|Promote the development of close links between UL Hospitals and UL and with other key stakeholders, in relation to clinical research, practice |

|development and education related developments. |

| |

|Work closely with the UL Hospitals nursing executive team, nurse managers, specialist and advanced practitioners, staff nurses, education and research |

|committee, Nursing & Midwifery Planning & Development Unit (NMPDU), Centre for Nursing & Midwifery Education (CNME), and Nursing Practice Development |

|Department (NPDD). |

| |

|Build relationships with other cognate disciplines across the UL schools and colleges, other universities nationally and internationally, nursing teams|

|in primary, community and continuing care settings. |

| |

|Research, innovation and practice development |

|The post holder will; |

| |

|Engage in and support the development of clinical research in nursing that is explicitly linked to desired patient outcomes and experiences. |

| |

|Make a significant contribution to nursing research and develop a joint research agenda between University of Limerick and UL Hospitals focusing on |

|agreed research priorities |

| |

|Mentor, support, motivate and advise clinicians engaged in research activity e.g. Advanced Nurse/Midwife Practitioners. |

| |

|Encourage, lead and conduct inter-professional research and practice initiatives |

| |

|Lead and support nurses in securing external funding for research activities. |

| |

|Contribute to building a culture that provides for nurses at all levels of the organisation to enhance their practice in the provision of high quality |

|safe care. |

| |

|Teaching and Learning |

|The post holder will: |

| |

|Promote excellence in teaching and learning and encourage the application of innovative teaching and learning methodologies including graduate research|

|training at UL and contribute to teaching and staff development at UL Hospitals. |

| |

|Contribute to the development and planning of nursing and inter-professional programmes including post-graduate and doctoral programmes. |

| |

|Influence the strategic development of nurse education both within the service and in the university. |

| |

|Communication and information |

|The post holder will: |

| |

|Facilitate and promote the national and international profiles of UL Hospitals and UL Department of Nursing & Midwifery |

| |

|Promote the discipline of nursing internally and externally in UL and UL Hospitals |

| |

|Develop links with professional bodies and external agencies, where appropriate. |

| |

|Provide strategic leadership in education and policy developments in clinical nursing and will promote interdisciplinary collaboration in education, |

|research and clinical practice and foster good interdisciplinary relationships at UL Hospitals and within the University. |

| |

|Eligibility Requirements |

| |

|Essential |

|Extensive knowledge and experience demonstrated by 5 years relevant experience in the discipline (nursing, teaching and/or research). |

|PhD in relevant area. |

|Eligibility to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board Ireland. |

|High profile in research through first class publications in peer-reviewed journals and of securing research funding. |

|Supervision experience especially at post graduate research level. |

|Evidence of ability to facilitate individuals and teams engaged in a variety of research and practice development activities. |

|Evidence of supervising PhD students to successful completion. |
