Urban ecosystems have generally been examined in terms of their impact on biodiversity. Urban Biodiversity provides vast range of environmental services like urban tree cover, air quality improvement, energy saving, reduction of global warming and carbon dioxide, noise abatement soil conservation etc.The Forest Survey of India report states that Assam has 128 sq. km of urban tree cover (FSI 2014). The Urban trees have immense contribution to the quality of life of people residing in towns and cities and many of this tree species is host of other taxa such as insects, reptiles, birds etc. The ecosystem services provided by the different groups of species are yet to be studied in the urban areas of Assam. Hence, the gap needs to be filled for both in case of the exploration of the biodiversity as well as the strategies to manage them in the ever increasing urban environment. The Biological Diversity Act, 2002 says that every local body shall constitute Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) within its area of jurisdiction. Accordingly, the Assam State Biodiversity Board in co-operation with the Urban Development Department, Assam formed BMCs at 96 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)/ Municipal Board (MB) and Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The first and foremost function of these BMCs is to prepare a Peoples Biodiversity Register (PBR). Though these 97 BMCs have prepared their 1st phase PBR but updation and documentation of PBR is a continuous process. With an aim to assist these 97 urban local body BMCs in preparation and updation of PBRs and also to maintain a proper and informative database for conservation of the Urban Biodiversity, the Board has taken this initiative and conceptualized the online Urban Biodiversity photo documentation competition. A list of Municipal Board Biodiversity Management Committees (M.B. BMCs) is at Annexure I for reference. What to document? Here is an overview for the participants about what to document for participating in this photo documentation competition. As the theme says about Urban Biodiversity, the Board is keen to bring these themes and sub-themes: Theme 1: Urban Flora Sub-theme 1.1: Agro-biodiversity: crop plants, fruit plants etc. Sub-theme 1.2: Wild Biodiversity: timber plants, aquatic flora, ornamental plants, medicinal plants, spices, wild relative of crops, fungi, algae, moss & liverworts, ferns, rare and endemic plants etc.Sub-theme 1.3: Domesticated Biodiversity: fruit plants, ornamental plants, medicinal plants, timber plants, spices etc.Theme 2: Urban FaunaSub-theme 2.1: Vertebrates: Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds & Mammals etc.Sub-theme 2.2: Invertebrates: Insects, Spider, tick & mites, molluscs, earthworm & leech, flat worms & round worms etc.Theme 3: Urban Landscape: forest, tree covers, agriculture, waterscape etc. How to document?Participant can use good resolution camera. Photographs clicked or documented in a mobile camera is also acceptable if it is clicked in a professional manner which can be used by the Board for future referenceWho can participate? This photo documentation competition is categorized into three groups:Group 1: For Class IX to XII students.Group 2: For graduate & undergraduates.Group 3: For Post Graduate students and above (No age limit). A person who resides in Assam subject to having knowledge of Urban Biodiversity, photographic skills and experience in documenting biodiversity and wildlife can participate in this competition. How to participate?Interested candidate can participate in this competition by filling up a Google Form. The Google form link is as provided: Participants have to submit their photos as a ZIP file in our Email Id: asbb.photoarchive@ The email address filled in the Google Form must be same as the address from where the photographs are sent.Photographs should be of 2.5 to 5 Mega Pixel and must be in a JPEG format. An individual participant has to submit at least 10 photographs in a particular theme to qualify for the competition.A participant can submit photographs in more than one theme, if desired. Participants have to sent a datasheet in word or excel sheet providing informations of the photographs. Photographs should be given a number as caption. For example: Photo 1, Photo 2, Photo 3 and so on. The details of the photographs submitted should be written in the data sheet such as Photo 1: Local Name; Scientific Name; Photo location/area; location/area falls under which Municipal Board/ULBs; Photo Size and Camera Used. A Format of the datasheet is at Annexure II for reference.Participants have to attach a passport size photo along with a copy of address proof and identity proof in the mail. Participants have to clearly write their educational qualification in the mail.Participants have to clearly write in the subject of the mail for which group they are participating along with the name of the theme or sub-theme they are participating for.For Example: Participating in Group I under the theme Urban Flora sub theme Agro-biodiversity. Prizes and Rewards There will be First, Second and Third Prize for each group. The winners will get a set of books/publications published by the Assam State Biodiversity Board along with the Certificate and a Memento. The top 10 participants will be rewarded with a Certificate of Appreciation and book set and all the participants will get a Certificate of Participation for their contribution in documenting the Urban Biodiversity of Assam. Criteria for selecting the WinnersSince this photo competition is purely conceptualized to document the Urban Biodiversity, therefore the winners will be selected based on the following criteria:Relevant to the Theme and Sub-theme.Originality of the photographs.Quality of the photographs.Quality photographs of rare, endemic and threatened species will be given top priority in selection of the winners.Photo identification and submission of the photographs as desired.*Note: The Board reserves the rights to publish photographs collected from this competition in any publications, PBRs etc of the Board.
