Bill Patterson - Vietnam photos transferred to CD #1

Bill Patterson - Vietnam photos transferred to CD #1.

Today I have some new material for more stories from our 319th Transportation Company assignment in Vietnam 1968-69.  Some old photos I had have been transferred to a computer disc and captioned by 319th Veteran Wendell Moore in his goodness.  I will now share these photos one at a time for my friends and family.

By the way, Wendell offers his service to all 319th Vietnam Veterans.  I hope when you all see his work you will contribute photos for all of us to share.  He will of course return your photos and they are safe in his care.  Wendell does very good work as you will see.

The first photo attached is a "self-portrait".  I had bought a tripod in our PX and used it a few times since I was usually alone when time allowed photography.  My Petri Racer 35MM camera was built with a port for tripod attachment.

I made no effort to smile that day.  We had been in the war for a few months and seen some sobering sights.  Smiling seemed to be misleading so I didn't try.

The uniform was originally the size triple-extra-large I was issued in Fort Lee Virginia.  The little Vietnamese contract tailor in Long Binh did not understand why I did not exchange it through our Army.  I tried to explain that I tried and it didn't happen.  So she cut them down (I had a few sets) to about half their original size and I wore them the entire time there.  She did a good job.

I weighed about 140 pounds then.

The buildings in the background are the 572nd Transportation Company, across the street from our 319th and the same company I was assigned to for a while.

This group of pictures was preserved by my family members after I mailed them home from Vietnam.  Many years later my family members returned them to me.  Many other valuable photos were destroyed or disposed of by an irate female who shall remain nameless!

I hope you enjoy these recently-reappearing photos.
