Five Rivers Role Profile

As a member of the care team you need to be committed to the provision of high standards of care at all times. This role requires a willingness to work with a wide range of presenting needs of children and to develop and maintain effective care practice to ensure that the children are cared for in a safe, nurturing environment with a therapeutic underpinning enabling children to move on to foster care in a planned and evidenced way.

The knowledge, experience and skills of the Residential Care Worker will be essential components to help the children to achieve the best possible outcomes. You will be a good role model able to demonstrate effective practice and appropriate relationships with children and colleagues. You will be confident in supporting colleagues in responding effectively and efficiently to the varied, unique and collective needs of the children in your care and to have good understanding of how to manage such needs.

You will be required to follow clear direction and guidance and work as part of a team to function at the highest possible level. In turn, you will provide support and guidance to children and develop positive nurturing relationships with them.

You will support the home in attaining its legislative requirements (Children’s Homes Regulations 2015, Ofsted, etc.) and Five Rivers’ standards through the application of its policies and procedures in practice.

This position requires the ability to be resilient, to be solution focused, to motivate, to be understanding and insightful of the children and to be part of their successful outcomes. This will require a high degree of energy and an optimistic attitude to ensure a culture of ‘proactive’ day to day care practice in the home is always maintained making a positive difference to children’s lives. You will also support children in educational settings and in community-based activities.

This post will require flexible and creative approaches to working and therefore requires the post holder to be able to commit to undertaking a flexible work pattern to attend to the needs of the home, team and children.

You will be required to maintain written records and be involved in all recording aspects of the home to meet the Statement of Purpose and all necessary legislative requirements e.g. risk assessments, care plans, medicine recording, incident reports, etc.

Five Rivers expects Residential care Workers to be committed to continuous self-improvement and reflective practice and will provide support and learning opportunities to promote these.

• To provide primary basic care and nurturing, contribute to a therapeutic environment to help the child progress.

• Maintain clear and consistent boundaries in order to create a safe and secure environment within the home.

• To be a positive role model by being punctual, dress appropriately and act in a professional and supportive manner at all times.

• Undertake sleep-in duties as part of a rota system and be flexible in order cover sickness and holidays.

• To demonstrate professional and calm behaviour across a variety of situations.

• Thorough knowledge of the care plan for the children and all planned activities for the day.

• Ensure that all concerns are communicated to your supervisor with regards to the children’s physical or emotional needs and be alert to signs of distress or abuse, and to ensure that they are monitored and protected.

• To provide for the young person’s physical needs as necessary, for example, by cooking, washing, ironing, shopping, bathing (where appropriate), budgeting, or by enabling them to carry out such tasks for themselves.

• Adopt a child centred approach and ensure the needs of the young people are met.

• Engage, communicate and listen to the young people and record any significant features of their behaviour.

• Take active part in team meetings and regularly provide views and ways to improve current practice.

• Demonstrate a positive ‘can do’ attitude.

• Act as a member of the staff team, support colleagues and be prepared to receive support and advice as necessary through supervision and general communication.

• Write reports accurately and to a competent standard of English.

• Basic understanding of petty cash and ensuring items are bought as part of the home’s budget allowance and agreement from the Home manager.

• Demonstrate willingness to learn and improve through training and supervision.

• Complete the induction standards and achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce within 12 months.

• Basic understanding of attachment theory and child development.

• Understanding of Psychological theories and basic human needs e.g. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, Motivational theories etc.

• Understanding Safeguarding and Child protection procedures.

• An understanding of child development and the impact of trauma.

• Awareness of Regulatory and Legislative frameworks e.g. Children’s Homes Regulations 2015

• Completion of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training.

• Good written, IT and verbal communication skills. Able to communicate effectively with children, colleagues and external customers.

• Excellent time management skills in order to complete reports and tasks within the set deadlines.

• Emotional awareness in both self and others.

• Ability to listen and empathise.

• Ability to work individually and as part of a team.

• Be calm in situations of crisis and follow the lead of the shift leader.

• GCSE English or equivalent (Essential)

• QCF Level 3 in Health & Social Care (Children and Young People’s Workforce) or equivalent (Desirable)

• Be committed to ongoing professional development and achieving a Level 3 diploma in Children and Young people as supported by the training department. (Essential)

• Able to use de-escalation techniques to prevent incidents.

• Complete all mandatory training.

• Complete the Induction workbook within 3 months.

• Ability to complete accident and incident reports

• Write children’s daily summaries, records and other recordings.

• Proactive in maintaining the environment for the young people.

• To encourage young people to participate in activities that they enjoy that are healthy and safe.

• Meeting the young persons’ medical needs by liaising with the relevant medical professionals and administering medication where necessary.

• Contributing to statutory meetings e.g. LAC reviews, PEP reviews, Pathway plans, Safeguarding reviews.
