Athletic Director’s Report

Bob Bozzuto (Athletic Director) started his report by letting the membership know that we had a great year and he appreciates all the work the group has done to make it a success. Bob discussed the following with the membership:

-Softball

The girls’ softball team won the semifinals. The Championship game will be next Thursday at Lilley Field at California University of Pennsylvania.

-Academics

The results are amazing with over 70% of our student athletes achieving a grade point average over a 3.4.

- MSA Cup

We won our 10th MSA cup this year. The Tribune Review Cup will be awarded to us on the 1st day of graduation practice. Bob stated that our success at North Allegheny begins at home with great parents, teachers, and coaches. This success does not have to be at the expense of academics.

-Capital Improvements

NASH – A new gym floor will be sanded and varnished this summer. Asphalt paving leading to the girls’ softball field will be completed this summer. We are looking for fundraising to improve the locker rooms.

MMS - The pool has been renovated and a new scoreboard was installed.

Website - The web design is newly renovated and looks nice. We will have a more modern look for the 2013-14 sports season.

-Fall Schedules – Varsity schedules are finished and Middle School schedules are almost complete.

-Sports Pre-participation Packet

Everything that you need to know for your child to play sports at North Allegheny will be in one place. There will also be an Athletic Orientation video that will be available to students in grades 7-12. This video will discuss the responsibilities of an athlete and what it means to play sports.

- Participation Fee

The fee for the sports program participation may increase by approximately $3.00. The fee for intramurals will not increase. There has not been any decline in sports participation with the current fee structure. Coaches will not be able to collect money. Checks and forms should be turned into the school that the student athlete attends. There has been some decline in participation in some of the intramural programs. We are looking to increase female participation in our intramural programs.

-Accountability Act

The Department of Education developed a new form. Booster groups fall under the Athletics umbrella and must show the money that they raised and how it is spent. Bob will meet with the booster groups and the school district to discuss these changes. This Act is a hot topic with the state.

-Volunteer Level Concussion Program

This program was originated and developed by local youth sports groups. All information and protocols will be made available in mid-June.

-Pep Assemblies

For the 2013-14 school year, the pep rallies will be held on two days at the 7 elementary schools. There will be two groups sent on each day. Four schools will be scheduled on September 6th and three on September 20th. There will be full participation by the sports groups in which some will be outside of their season. We will need help from the booster groups to keep these assemblies going. We will need more MC’s and parent volunteers.

Bob stated that he appreciates all of the help and cooperation from the schools and Brian Miller (Central Administration).

Bob also added that the schools agreed to continue these assemblies because of the passion that this group has for this program and the importance of student athletes “giving back”.

-Bob Miller Award

Jill Guthrie is the recipient of this distinguished award. She will be honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet at the Chadwick in Wexford on October 3, 2013.

Bob closed his report by saying thank you to the membership for their dedication to this program. We had a great year.

Minutes

Lisa Salamone (Secretary) asked the membership if there were any corrections to the March Minutes. Kathy Brown made a motion to approve the minutes, seconded by Bonnie Genter. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s Report

Daryl Mendenhall (Treasurer) reviewed the Treasurer’s Report (handout) with the membership. A checking account balance of $6,596.14 was reported. Jana Lake made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s Report, seconded by Ann Best. Motion passed.

On-going Committee Reports

Pep Assemblies

Georgiana asked if there were any questions regarding the pep assemblies for next year. Participants will be bused to the elementary schools. Jana Lake stated that the booster groups will be able to help get the participants to sign up for the pep rallies.

Kennywood

Georgiana announced that there were Kennywood tickets available for sale. See Daryl for purchase. She also thanked the coordinators for doing a great job with the Kennywood Day committees.

Ticket sales in the schools were a little lower than last year. The eighth graders at MMS and IMS were not able to purchase tickets due to Keystone testing. The UBO and Kennywood personnel were not aware of the two hour delay at NAI. We had to make a schedule change with the Kennywood employees at the last minute and they did their best to work with the last minute changes. There was a problem with the date on the schedule for Kennywood Day next year. It was scheduled for June 11th and the last day of school is June 12th. The 2014 Kennywood Day is now scheduled on Thursday, June 19th.

Membership

Twilley Delligatti (Membership) thanked the representatives for serving this year. She asked the membership to let her know if they will be coming back next year. She passed around the roster and asked the group to make sure their information was correct.

Scholar Athlete Awards

Certificates and T-Shirts are on the table for Spring Sports.

Patti McClure informed the group that the IT department fixed the problem with the calculation of grades, so there is no longer an issue for scholar athlete awards.

Scholarships

Kathleen Nachazel (Scholarships) thanked the committee for their participation in interviewing the candidates for awards. Committee members were Twilley Delligatti, Kristen Heckert, Marie Bartolomucci, and Daphne Turner.

The deadline for the Tiger Team of Merit is June 3rd at noon.

Fundraisers

Tiger Door Mats are on sale for $25. Jill will give us 100% profit.

Officer/Chairperson 2013-2014

The CMS Scholar Athlete position is open for next year.

Hall of Fame Banquet

Georgiana informed the group that the North Allegheny Hall of Fame Association will be celebrating its 17th Annual Induction Banquet at the Chadwick on Thursday, October 3, 2013. Tickets are $40/ person for Hall of Fame members and $45 for non-members. A table of 8 is $320 ($40/ person for the entire table). Georgiana stated that it is a nice evening for all and to please consider attending.

Representative Reports

Reports were given by the following groups. Notes were collected by the secretary and will be kept for record.

Baseball

Marcie Divosevic reported that the North Allegheny Baseball tryouts were held the first week of March. The JV/Varsity roster includes: 10 seniors, 15 juniors, and 11 sophomores. The 9th grade team consists of 19 players. The middle schools approximate rosters are: CMS-18, IMS- 22, and MMS-24. There are 119 players in the entire program. Marcie stated that their booster organization had 100% participation this year. Their major fundraiser is a lottery ticket sale. Other fundraisers include: Handel’s Ice Cream Cards, Sheetz Coupon Books, and concession stand sales. Their annual “Tigerfest” was held on March 10th for all players, coaches, and parents. Team photos were taken and booster information was given. Ten seniors were honored on May 1st at their game against New Castle. All middle school players were also recognized during inning breaks. Pizza and drinks were provided for the middle school teams. Both the JV and Varsity teams had a great season. The JV team had only one loss. The Varsity record is 18-4 overall and 7-3 in their section. They finished second behind Seneca Valley and just last evening secured a spot in the WPIAL AAAA Championship game to be held next Wednesday at Consol Energy Field against Seneca Valley! Seneca Valley and North Allegheny have been consistently ranked as the number 1 and 2 teams this year in AAAA baseball. They also secured a spot in the PIAA playoffs. Two North Allegheny senior players were selected to play in the WPIAL AAAA All Star game on June 9th: James Meeker (infielder) and Jimmy Divosevic (outfielder). Banquet was held on May 19th at the Four Point Sheraton in Cranberry. This season marked Andy Maddix’s 100th win as head coach at NA. He was honored with a plaque at their banquet. The current senior class was in 7th grade, when Coach Maddix became head coach at NA. This team will be the first to graduate playing his philosophy of baseball.

Boys Lacrosse

Kathleen Nachazel reported that North Allegheny has 3 boys’ lacrosse teams. Many area schools do not have lacrosse teams. Our booster group sponsors supplemental coach’s staff. Fundraising includes a Lacrosse Instructional Clinic, Play Day for Youth, and Sheetz coupon books. They have a Lacrosse Leadership Program which allows high school players to work with youth players to earn leadership hours. Their community service project is the Produce to People which was held on May 11th. They work with the area food bank to distribute food to those in need. The Varsity overall record is 11-4. They are the WPIAL Division 1, Section 2 regular season champions and are advancing to the WPIAL Playoff Championship game on Thursday, May 23rd at Baldwin High School. Banquet will be held on Sunday, June 2nd at the Chadwick in Wexford.

Girls Lacrosse

Gregg Hartung reported that Girls Lacrosse is comprised of two programs: Middle School and High School.

Middle School

The middle school program had two teams this year coached by Shannon Conner and Emma Luitgaarden. All three middle schools make up two teams: Black (8th graders) and Gold (7th graders). Both teams worked hard and had successful seasons. The development of the youth club program this last year was a good feeder to this middle school program and growing even more for next season.

High School

There are 31 girls on the JV/Varsity Lacrosse team (9th -12th grade) and only 2 senior players. This team is coached by Shannon Hadaway. Their overall record is 7-7-1. The team did not make the playoffs, but beat rival Pine-Richland in the last section game of the season. Christine Palmeri will play at Seton Hill University. Tryouts are held in March. Booster dues are $100. There is also a $75 volunteer fee that is returned to parents upon volunteering at the concession stand twice.

Fast-Pitch Softball

Elizabeth Cameron reported that the North Allegheny Girls Fast-Pitch Softball program has 56 girls from grades 7 through 12: Two middle school teams consist of 13 girls each, a JV team -14 girls, and a Varsity team -16 girls. Booster dues are $125 for middle school, $150 for JV, and $175 for varsity players. The Varsity team won their section. On Monday they beat McKeesport (7-5) and won against Peters Township this afternoon (7-4). They will play in the finals next Thursday. Two girls were honored on senior night. Banquet was May 5th and scholar athletes were recognized. Almost all of the girls are scholar athletes! This year’s team charity was the Wounded Warrior Project. JV and Varsity players hosted a clinic for elementary players over two weekends in March to raise funds. A Silent Auction at the annual banquet was also used to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project. The softball team hosts other teams for playoff games at NASH. The team faces concession stand issues and hopes to resolve them by having a concession stand of their own closer to the field ( like most teams). Elizabeth mentioned that the set-up process is very time consuming and a lot of work. She also thanked the Track and Field Boosters for processing Pepsi orders for softball.

Track and Field

Patti McClure informed the group that both the girls and boys track and field teams had a great season! There are approximately 180 student athletes that compete in a variety of track and field events. All individual and relay events are scored and the team with the highest score at the end of the meet is the champion. Patti explained that Track and Field is sort of a cut sport, since coaches do not actually make the decision to cut an athlete. Specific qualifying times/distances are set up for each event. To make the team you must be better than at least one of the pre-determined times/distances. This sport has a small schedule that includes a lot of invitational meets as opposed to dual or tri-meets. Both teams went undefeated this year in the regular season and captured the Section Title. The girls’ team ended 4th in the WPIAL and the boys’ team took home the WPIAL Championship title! Individual champions that qualified to participate in the state championships include: Kyle Shivetts (200 Meter Dash), Brett Neugebauer (Pole Vault), and the 4x800 Meter Relay. Both teams did very well at the individual qualifying meet at Baldwin and 30 athletes will go to the PIAA State Championship at Shippensburg University this weekend. It is one of the largest groups from NA sent to States. Patti is looking forward to good news!

Boys Volleyball

Ann Best reported that the NA Boys’ Volleyball tryouts were held in March. The program consists of a Varsity (15 players - 9 seniors, 6-juniors), a JV (15 sophomores), a 9th grade (14 players- 13 freshman, 1-8th grader), and two middle school teams (9 players each- 10-7th graders, 8- 8th graders). Midway through the season 4 sophomores were moved to varsity level and 2 more sophomores moved up during playoffs. The advanced play for these younger players will help the team next year with only 6 juniors at this time. The Junior High program had a lot of interest and cuts were made (10 -9th grade and 5 (7th/8th grade). The Varsity and JV teams play 6 teams in Section 2: Shaler , Seneca Valley, Butler, Fox Chapel, North Hills, and Pine Richland). Other competition includes: Bethel Park and Canon McMillan. The JV finished 11-1 in their section and 14-1 overall. They finished 1st in the Derry, State College, and Central York tournaments. The JV team came in 2nd in our North Allegheny pre-season tournament.

The Varsity team was undefeated in their section and 15-0 overall. They also came in first place in the Derry, State College, and Central York tournaments after achieving the 2nd place spot in their home pre-season tournament. Both JV and Varsity were able to beat the team they lost to in pre-season in the subsequent tournaments. North Allegheny Varsity Boys Volleyball only lost 2 sets all season (51-2 record) giving them the #1 rank in the state all season. They will play in the WPIAL Championship game tomorrow night at Baldwin at 8PM. Ann told the group to come out and support the team! NA has won 6 consecutive WPIAL titles and 9 out of their last 10. They already qualified for the PIAA playoffs which begin next week. The state championship game is scheduled for June 8th. The coach is Dan Schall. Most players play club volleyball during the off season (Nov.-Feb.) and summer nationals in July. Summer recreation and open gyms keep them busy all year. The booster fee is $170. Fundraisers include: a car wash, pre-season tournament, concession stand, and 50/50 raffles. Their banquet will be held June 10th.

Rowing

Kathy Brown reported that NA Rowing is a club sport that started in 1989. North Allegheny had the first scholastic rowing team in the Pittsburgh area. Local competition now includes: Fox Chapel, Pine Richland, Upper St. Clair, Mount Lebanon, Hampton, Central Catholic, Oakland Catholic, TRRA club, and Steel City club. The North Allegheny Rowing Association owns all the boats, ergometers, and equipment. It is run by a parent elected board. This club sport puts the burden of cost on the family. Rowers can pay a monthly fee or a lump sum at the beginning of the fall and spring seasons. Fundraisers include: a car wash, frozen cookie dough sale, plant sale, and an indoor erg race (registrations, program advertising, raffle baskets, concessions, and t-shirt sales). The NARA is also looking into corporate sponsorship in which newly acquired boats will be named to raise funds. On March 2nd the NARA hosted their 13th annual North Allegheny Indoor Rowing Championship at Marshall Middle School. There were over 350 competitors and just under 1000 people in attendance. For the first time they also had events for Adaptive Athletes, which was a great experience or all. They are working with an Adaptive Rowing Program in Pittsburgh and the team helps physically and mentally challenged individuals learn to row. They also raise money to buy equipment for adaptive rowers.NA has 55 rowers (a boys and a girls’ team) and has been a dominant scholastic rowing program in western PA. They have two new head coaches with a lot of experience that started this fall: Megan Batykeefer and Todd Ridenour. Practices are held at our boathouse near Neville Island called the Groveton Boat Club. NA shares this boathouse with Pine Richland. The team is bused to practice every day after school. Racing starts in mid-April and continues through mid- May. NA rowing also attends 5 regattas from Columbus to Philadelphia. NA Rowing has had great success. Last Spring 1 senior boat and 2 sophomore boats won gold medals at Regionals. These teams went on to compete at the National level in New Jersey and Tennessee. This year 5 boats and 20 rowers will compete at the SRRA’s in New Jersey this weekend. Boats are petitioning to go to the U. S. Rowing Competition in Oakridge, Tennessee in June. This year two seniors signed with colleges for rowing: Kaitlyn Clem-Duquesne (Division 1) and Sam Sheridan- Mercyhurst. Five boys are on the “NA Top 25 Best ERG Times” with 2 in the top 5. Two girls are also on the Top 25 list with 2 more within 1/100th of a second of making it. This winter five boys were sent to the 32nd Annual C.R.A.S.H B World Indoor Rowing Championship. This was only the second time in NA history that our athletes were able to join this great race with 2200 rowers from a dozen countries. One of our NA rowers finished 23rd out of 225 competitors putting him in the top 10% of his category. He also achieved the fourth spot on the NA Men’s Top 25 list. The banquet is scheduled for Monday, June 3rd at the Chadwick in Wexford.
