Personal Poetry Anthology

7th grade

A poetry anthology is a collection of poems. Your project this nine weeks is to create an anthology of poems that you write and poems that you find. Your anthology will contain a minimum of 21 poems, and it will be divided into three sections.

Due Date: Thursday, September 16.

Section One

Section one of your anthology focuses on published poems. It will contain at least eight poems, one poem per page. Poems must be at least FIFTEEN lines long in length. You may not use the same author twice.

Your eight poems must include examples of these poetic devices. Indicate which device the poem exemplifies in the right hand corner of the page. A poem may include more than one poetic device, but cite only one device per poem. You may include more than eight poems, but not more than fifteen. Remember, going above and beyond the minimum requirements earns extra credit.

Poetic Devices

• personification

• simile

• metaphor

• alliteration

• onomatopoeia

• hyperbole

• rhythm (mark the stressed/unstressed syllables)

• rhyme scheme (A,B,C,D)

Please underline examples of the bulleted devices. You only need to underline one example of each poetic device. On the upper right hand corner of the page, label the poetic device.

Poems must be neatly hand copied or typed. Number each page consecutively.

Section Two

Section two of your anthology will focus on writing your own poems. You must have at least five poems in this section, but you may have up to ten. Again, remember that going above and beyond the minimum requirements earns extra credit.

In this section, you are to have the following types of poems:

• Calligram, Rhyming Ladder, or Outline (two only)

• Definition Poem (may have more than one)--at least twelve lines long

• Experience Poem (may have more than one)—at least twelve lines ling

• Original poem on any appropriate topic (at least twelve lines long; you may have more than one)

On the upper right hand corner of the paper, label each type of poem.

Section Three

For the last section of your anthology, you are going to select an author and a poem by that author (one that you have not used thus far). The poem should be a minimum of fifteen lines long. The poem should be the first page of section three. Then, you have two tasks to complete.

Task 1

You are going to research the author of the poem. Try to find out what was going on in the author’s life at the time he/she wrote the poem and how the poem reflects those events. At the very least, determine some basic facts about the author’s life: when and where he/she lived; his/her early life and education; his/her career and family life; and his/her major accomplishments.

▪ Take hand-written notes (you will turn in your notes behind the final draft of your interview)

▪ At least three sources (no Wikipedia!) cited MLA style at the conclusion of your interview

You will use this information to write a biography about your author. Your biography must be a minimum of five well-developed paragraphs. Try to include some interesting facts about your poet. Finally, make sure you have an introduction and a conclusion to your biography.

Task 2

Write a three paragraph analysis of this poem. What is it about this poem that appeals to you? What uses of language are especially effective? What is the main idea of this poem?

Order of Anthology:

1. Anthology Cover (10 points)- title of your collection, your name, teacher’s name, date, and an illustration.

2. Title Page (10 points)- title of the collection of poetry and a colorful illustration. The illustration should be hand-drawn (no clip art or art drawn on the computer). This is not the cover of your anthology! This is the first page of your anthology.

4. Table of Contents (10 points) – Section one poems are to be listed by title of the poem, author’s name, poetic device the poem exemplifies, and page number within your anthology. Section two poems are to be listed by the title of the poem. Section three is to be listed by task. Number all your pages!!

5. Poems (28 points)- must consist of fourteen poems; one poem per page. Poems must be at least fifteen lines long in length (in section one). In sections two and three, the poems must be at least twelve lines long, with exception of the concrete/outline poems. You may not use the same author twice.

6. Original Poems (15 points)- make sure your title your poems! One poem per page; label each type of poem. Your concrete poems should be colorful and neat!

7. Author study with notes and source citations (30 points)

8. Poem Analysis (25 points)

Important Notes

• Collection must be attractively bound in some fashion. It may not be stapled together- it may be in a notebook of some sort, it may be bound with a pretty ribbon, but please do not turn in a stapled bunch of paper or a bunch of paper that is paper-clipped together. Please have a cover (much like a book cover) with the title of the collection, your name, and an illustration. Do not use a clear, plastic cover with the slide blinder. Additionally, please do not use sheet protectors. (5 points)

• Please have attractive hand-drawn illustrations. You must have at least two illustrations aside from your cover and title page. Extra credit consideration will be given to more than two neat and attractive illustrations. (10 points)

• Make sure that it is ready to turn in when you arrive to class. Please do not collate it in class- it should be ready to hand to me when you arrive.
