Snyder Sense

Josh Snyder ? Editor

If you're like me, this time of year is a time of anticipation. I like to get out and do things, and this time of year, for the most part, is not conducive to doing things outside, like driving a Porsche. I can't tell you how much I'm anticipating March 8 when we move our clocks forward and get an extra hour of daylight! The weather starts turning and it's a glorious time of year.

Now, though, is a time of planning. We begin filling our calendars with business travel, sporting events, vacations and more. Hopefully, there's time left over to attend one of the many OVR events the club is already diligently planning for the year. As secretary and newsletter editor this year, my eyes have really been opened to the massive effort put into each event to make it something truly special for our members. As a credit to our chairs, each one wants to make his or her event really stand out among the crowd of so many great events each year.

Steve Nelson is busy coordinating with numerous other groups to plan concours events throughout the year. Red Brick Reunion looks to be a bigger and better event this year with a happy hour on Friday, car show on Saturday and possibly a group drive to French Lick for Parade on Sunday. I'm sure the serious concours folks are already planning their show schedule for the year and brushing up

on techniques to make their car "pop" more than the next guy's.

Mark Simpson is planning our West Virginia Outreach event for the end of May. To give you a sneak peek into the planning process, there's a possible car show at the Greenbrier Sporting Club and a tour through the Appalachian Mountains. Bill Kief and the autocross committee have a full slate of autocross events planned this year. Gary Nichols is making special plans for our 25th year at Mid-Ohio.

Earlier this year, I wanted a way to track all of these fantastic events and to update them as soon as someone in the club sent me dates and information about them, so I created a calendar with my ovrbentpylon@ address. You can already keep track of the OVR calendar in the Bent Pylon and on our website at . However, in our increasingly tech-centered society, many people expect to have access to their calendar all the time on any device, particularly mobile devices.

Now you can keep track of all OVR events by subscribing to the iCal format link at the bottom of this article. No matter what type of electronic calendar you use (Outlook, Google, Yahoo!, etc) you should be able to find instructions on how to subscribe to an iCal calendar. The only compatibility issue I know of is Outlook for Mac users.

Patrick McCue and I met Bill Kief on an unseasonably warm and sunny Saturday in February for this photoshoot. Watching and helping Patrick "paint the car with light" to create images of stark contrast between the Peridot Green Metallic car and the arches of the concrete guardrails was truly a pleasure.

Bill Kief is a former OVR president and current autocross chair. He lives in Anderson, works in industrial sales and spends the majority of his free time in Cincinnati with OVR members. Bill also has a second life in Los Angeles with his wife Janet and daughter Jayde who are following Jayde's creative life in performance arts. This gives Bill a chance to chase the west coast car scene and expand his Porsche family.

Why did you become a board member?

Paul and Marilyn Jones asked Janet and me to serve on the OVR board in 1994 and anyone who met Paul and Marilyn quickly understood they rarely if ever heard the word no. I have enjoyed every bit of serving the club.

What was your first Porsche?

My first Porsche was a 1985 Carrera with Guards Red paint, black interior, Guards Red BBS wheels and both front and rear spoilers. Janet and I loved that car.

What is your current Porsche?

Presently my daughter Jayde and I own a 2012 Cayman R with Peridot Metallic paint, black Alcantara interior, 19" wheels, some aluminum body panels and front and rear spoilers. Jayde and I prepared it for a few concours events the first year but now we enjoy track events and autocross with our dear Peridot.

What is your favorite Porsche of all time?

My favorite Porsche of all time was the GT1. Rohr Motorsport here in northern Cincinnati campaigned one in 1997 and won the IMSA Championship. I was lucky enough to know the Rohr guys and spent a lot of time at the garage and at the track with them and the car.

What is your most memorable OVR event and why?

The 1993 Porsche Parade was hosted by OVR. Janet and I were new to OVR but thought it was a blast. We met hundreds of PCA members, several Porsche executives and Peter Porsche, son of Ferry Porsche. Janet volunteered in hospitality and I volunteered for concours garage prep security, hospitality and Sale Night at The Goodie Store. That was wilder than the Moonlight Sales at McAlpins in Anderson.

If you could tell Porsche management one thing, what would it be?

I would tell them to keep making cars that are fun to drive and affordable to own. I would also ask for a lower weight (2500 lb) and higher horsepower (400) mid-engine car.

OVR PCA Profile

Brent Fagan - Membership Chair

The Ohio Valley Region PCA membership has grown to almost 800 Primary Active members. Thirty-nine of our prized members have not listed an email address in their PCA profile. Fifteen of those without an email address also have not listed a phone number in their profile. We respect our members' privacy and absolutely will not call unless contact is first initiated by the member. However, every member is very important and we want to insure that each member has an opportunity to participate in our Region and National activities. In an average month, the

Autocross

Nicole Dubnicay-Wellen - Autocross Committee

How many times have you been out for an evening drive, only to notice an empty parking lot off to the side with its lonely streetlamps calling you to take your Porsche on a whirlwind trip through its crisscross lines as fast as you can go? But alas, the fear of police sirens, security guards and those mischievous door dinging shopping carts keep you from being able to fulfil your desire. Problem solved: Autocross!

Ohio Valley Region will be kicking off a long anticipated autocross season in 2015 with five events starting in April and ending in September. Events will be held at Forest Fair Mall, the current location of Bass Pro Shops, near the intersection of I-275 (exit 39) and Winton Road north of Cincinnati.

The driving area will be in the back parking lot, a generous space where drivers will be able to reach substantial speeds by autocross standards. According to Bill Kief, OVR Autocross Committee Chair, "We all know there is pent-up demand and finding a large lot was the holdup. This venue gives us many desirable track configuration possibilities."

For those new to the sport, autocross is a fun and exciting way to drive your vehicle on a small track against the clock. Drivers will be maneuvering around sharp curves, slaloms, straightaways and in tight handling situations while pushing the cars' limits. All of this will be accomplished in a safe and controlled environment. One driver will be on the course individually so the risk to the vehicle is slight. Safety is always the primary concern at an autocross event.

Autocross is a fabulous opportunity for OVR members to get out and drive! It's an inexpensive way to push your driving limits, learn about safe handling in your vehicle and even earn some bragging rights. The events will be open to all OVR members, friends and family and their vehicles. Estimated cost per driver is $25 for the day.

Ohio Valley Region sends out about three emails to the entire membership. For those who consider email as a bother, we hope that there is a designee, such as a family member, or possibly a work associate or subordinate who could capture and direct important communications. Please contact me so I can help update your profile with your designated email address. My contact information is listed in this publication in the section entitled Committee Chairs.

PCA groups drivers by their car class, Pi (356) through P32 (991 Turbo S). There will be several classes for competition depending on what cars show up. Startup time on each Saturday day will be 8 a.m., with registration, tech inspections, track familiarity and morning briefing. There are options for eateries and restrooms in and near the mall. Bring a folding chair and personal shade if needed. Be on the lookout for more articles about Autocross in upcoming issues of the Bent Pylon. If you're interested in autocross, join us March 28 at Porsche of the Village for an autocross clinic. We will cover all the basics of this exciting sport and answer your questions. For more information please contact Bill Kief at highspeedriving@.

Spring Classic Driving Tour

Kurt Niemeyer - Member

Here in the Ohio Valley the frosty grip of winter is keeping many of us in the garage preparing our favorite wheeled friend for better (read warmer) days ahead. The Spring Equinox is approaching and the first of many driving tours for OVR is just down the road! Mark your calendar for Saturday April 18 to drive across southwest Ohio and get your own Porsche season rolling.

The Adams County Classic Driving Tour 2015 will wind across the ridges and valleys of southern Ohio, along Ancient Buffalo and Indian Trails, across the rim of a crater and bend along creek beds bursting with the first blooms of the new season. New routing and destinations are planned for your driving pleasure with stops at our favorite Amish Market for delicacies and accessories, where Tom Cole will be checking out the pies! The John T. Wilson Homestead Underground Railroad Station and Nationally recognized Historical Site is also on the agenda. A tour conducted by restorers Ralph and Patty Alexander will highlight the story. Barn Sale Antiques features a corner of Gas Station/Auto Dealer memorabilia always popular with car enthusiasts. Again this year we will be winding down at Moyer's On the River where you can sample the wine and culinary delights before a relaxing drive will get you back home.

The route is continuously and rigorously tested for characteristics that explore many features of your car while providing exemplary scenery and an overall lack of traffic. Entrants will be dispatched in small groups to avoid traffic congestion and allow everyone to safely enjoy the performance of their machine. We are in need of several more people to lead small groups of cars, so if you are interested in leading a group of cars, please send a message and we can get you acclimated with route instructions in advance of the event.

Last year we had 70 cars enjoy this event when we visited Adams County. Watch this space for online registration information coming soon!

Departing Saturday, April 18, 2015, registration 8 am., entrants meeting 9 am., first car out 9:30 am. From Burger King 882 State Route 28, Milford Ohio 45150.
