The Minister’s Black Veil

The Minister’s Black Veil

Nathaniel Hawthorne is generally considered one of America's foremost authors, and produced one of the country's great novels, The Scarlet Letter. As a romantic writer, Nathaniel Hawthorne specifically pens dark romantic tales that generally focus on themes relating to sin, guilt, and humankind's relationship with science and the natural world. His most famous short stories include "Rappaccini's Daughter", "The Minister's Black Veil", "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment", and "Young Goodman Brown".

"The Minister's Black Veil" is a short story with themes relating to secret sin and personal guilt, ideas more fully developed in Hawthorne's masterpiece The Scarlet Letter. Stylistically, the short story holds fast to traditional dark romanticism and gothic approaches. Specific to Hawthorne's interest, however, is that it is set within the claustrophobic confines of a dogmatic religious worldview and that the symbol—in this case the veil—is dominant throughout the story.
