St. John Lutheran Church

ANNOUNCEMENTS

MARCH 15, 2020

We are a light on the hill, empowered by Christ’s love,

to serve all people.

It’s a statement of vision that will be accomplished by Relying on God, Relating to each other as Christ has taught, and Responding to His grace with the help of the Holy Spirit.

“OPERATION EmBALDen PASTOR C” HAS BEGUN! As a result of 5% of St. John’s giving units pre-pledging over $300,000 to the Brighten…The Light Campaign, I am challenging the other 95% of St. John’s giving units to respond with the balance of our goal ($700,000). No pledge is too small or too large, it all adds up! God is up to something and it is a blessing to watch Him work in amazing ways. In fact, I‘m so in awe of His movement within us right now, that I am willing to sacrifice my hair and promise that if we exceed our Brighten…The Light goal of $1 million dollars pledged, the youth of St. John will have the privilege of shaving my head at the end of the service on March 29th, Commitment Sunday. If you want to see what I look like with a shaven head, prayerfully consider a 3-year-pledge, that, united with the entire congregation’s pledges, will put us over the top of our goal. Don’t forget that the service on the 29th is one service at 10:00AM with a celebration event to follow! Let Operation EmBALDen Pastor C begin!!!

=================================================================

COMMITMENT SUNDAY IS MARCH 29TH: On Sunday March 29th, we will have one blended service at 10:00AM celebrating God’s blessing in our lives and as a church body. The service will be a blend of traditional and praise music and include a moment where we pledge our commitment to the Brighten…The Light Campaign. Everyone is invited to continue the celebration after the service for a special fellowship event and meal. A sign-up sheet is in the Narthex. Please RSVP so we know how much food is needed for the meal.

MARCH 29TH IS COMMITMENT SUNDAY! You, the congregation of St. John, are asked to bring your Brighten…The Light envelopes with the commitment card inside that indicates the amount of financial support, over and above normal giving, you can prayerfully and thoughtfully give toward the enhancement of our ministry. Our prayer is that each St. John member or family will make a Brighten…The Light pledge that will help us brighten the light that God has blessed us with as we set on this hill, empowered by Christ’s love, to serve all people. The amount of each pledge, the method of giving, and the frequency of fulfilling the pledge is a personal decision for each individual/family. And whatever is prayerfully considered is valued and important to the future of our ministry. Below is a replica of the commitment card and envelope.

To complete the card:

Pray for guidance from the Lord as to what you can responsibly yet sacrificially give over and above your normal giving.

Determine the amount you can give over a 3-year period (see page 3).

Consider an Impact gift to be given on April 26th to jump start the campaign that will help cover upfront costs as we explore options of what we want to do with the money pledged on March 29th. This amount is to be deducted from the total pledge as is indicated on the card.

Chose how often you plan to contribute your remaining pledged amount (weekly, monthly, annually).

Place your name, address and date on the bottom of the pledge card; place it in the envelope and bring to the worship service on March 29th as an act of worship response to the goodness of your God’s grace and mercy. If you cannot attend the worship service on March 29th, you can drop off your card any time at the church office; just make sure to seal it in the envelope.

BRIGHTEN…THE LIGHT GIVING GUIDE: Below is a giving chart you can use to determine the level of gift you want to make for the Brighten…The Light campaign. We encourage you to pray and consider a level of sacrificial gift you and your family can make, over and above your normal level of giving. The chart helps you to see what a weekly, monthly or yearly gift computes to over a three-year period. It is also lets you know how many gifts at each level are need to help us reach our campaign goal. No gift is too small or too large and all will be celebrated equally. Together let’s make Brighten…The Light a moment to remember in the history of St. John!

BIBLE STUDY—Sunday Morning between services: From now until March 22nd a Bible Study entitled Living as Children of a Generous God will be offered that addresses how we respond to and participate in God’s mission as His children set on a hill, empowered by Christ’s love, to serve all people. Bring your Bible and be prepared to be stretched and challenged as one’s called by a generous God to be generous ourselves.

“Brighten…the Light” - the name chosen for our capital campaign, is an encouragement to each of us to spend more time in God’s Word and in prayer. The Prayer Team that has been established for this season invites you to join us in prayer through any or all of the following:

• Prayer Cards in the pew racks – the cards look different but serve the same purpose! Please use them for your prayer requests during the services; feel free to write on the back if you need more space!

• Daily Prayer Calendar – please take one from the table in the narthex and put it in a place where you will see it every day! Let’s lift up each other and the ministries of our church in prayer.

• Windows of Prayer – Look for the yellow candle, star and light bulb shapes on a table in the narthex and use them to write a prayer of thanksgiving or praise or concern. Then clip it to the twine attached to the narthex windows. You don’t need to include your name (or you may). The members of the Prayer Team will pray over these requests and you also are encouraged to do that as you walk by the windows. Children and youth are encouraged to participate as well! Let the shapes remind you of the Light that has come to dwell among us!

=================================================================

BRIGHTEN…THE LIGHT PACKETS AVAILABLE: All members of St. John are encouraged to pick up their Brighten…The Light packets located on the table in the Narthex. Inside the packet is a letter from Pastor Cosgrove, as well as a Brochure, Q&A’s, and a Commitment Card and envelope. We ask that you prayerfully consider supporting this ministry-driven campaign by filling out the commitment card and bringing it to worship on March 29th at 10:00AM. If you are a visitor that has been worshipping with us and would like to also participate in furthering our future ministry, then there are packets on the table in the Narthex for you as well.

=================================================================

LENT WORSHIP: Please plan to join us each Wednesday for worship at 7pm.

We will be having soup suppers before the Lenten services again this year. The dates are March 18th, & 25th, and April 1st. If you would like to contribute a soup for one of these weeks, please call Nancy Singley at 717.751.4743 or 314.283.6926 to let her know. Please bring your soup to the Fellowship kitchen by 5:45 pm. Thank you so much for your willingness to help.

=================================================================

Thrivent Choice® Dollars – If you have 2019 Thrivent Choice Dollars, you can donate these dollars to St. John Lutheran Church by calling Thrivent at 1-800-847-4836. The deadline is today, March 15th. St John thanks everyone that donates their Thrivent Choice Dollars to the Church.

Soul Care for Women is currently working through a DVD-based study of Esther. Please join us to learn more about how God used Esther to make a difference in the world and reflect on how He is calling you to do that in today’s world. The next sessions are on Tuesday, March 31st at 9:30am and Thursday, April 2nd at 7:00pm. The suggested donation to cover the cost of the book is $15.99. Please see Denise Wright with any questions.

=================================================================

MID-WEEK LENT SERMON SERIES: O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (Gradual for Lent, based on Hebrews 12:2)

When the characters in the Passion narrative look at Jesus, what do they see? In most cases, people misunderstood who He was and what He was doing. In some cases, by faith, people recognized Him aright. Our Lenten series this year, based on the Gospel according to St. Mark, will examine how the various people around Jesus viewed Him—and how we are to view Him. We will “fix our eyes” on what Jesus has done to save us from our sins by His holy, precious blood and innocent sufferings and death, and celebrate what God sees on account of His work: our justification for His sake.

March 18th—Denying Eyes

March 25th—Murderous Eyes

April 1st—Worldly Eyes

JOURNEY WITH LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF FOR THIS LENTEN SEASON!!

During the season of Lent, beginning the week of March 4th, St. John will once again collect personal care items for Lutheran World Relief’s Baskets of Promise Kits. The goal is to create 100 kits to send, through LWR, to underprivileged children around the world. The kits will be assembled the Saturday before Palm Sunday, April 4th.

Each week, during Lent, the following items will be collected:

Today—Bath Towels (light weight, between the sizes 20”X40” and 52”X27”) dark color.

Two or three bath-size bars of soap, equaling 8-9oz, any brand, in original wrapping

One adult-sized toothbrush in its original packaging

March 22nd—One sturdy comb, remove packaging

March 29th —One metal nail clipper (attached file optional), remove packaging

Grieving? If you are grieving or you know someone who is, would you please consider the GriefShare program here at St. John? The group meets on Mondays at 7:00 pm and Tuesdays at 1:30 pm. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17. Please help yourself to brochures with more information (they can be found in the narthex), or see Denise Wright.

=================================================================

THE GRIEF MINISTRY OF ST. JOHN will be offering a second support group opportunity for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide. We will meet once more during the month of March, on Thursday, March 26th from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm. There will be a video, conversation, and refreshments. Suicide is a different kind of loss and sharing with others who understand can be a great help. If you have been impacted by this kind of loss, whether recently or long ago, and would like to work through it, please consider joining us. See Denise Wright with any questions.

The MOP Guiderails Small Group Has it ever dawned on you that nothing has ever dawned on God? He knew before the world began that His people would face hardship, so He gave us His Word. The Book of Ephesians is a survival manual—it equips believers to thrive in a world that hates the message of Jesus Christ. Paul the Apostle writes to encourage believers to live well. If the people of your city, of your school, of your business, or of your family are going to hear the gospel, it just might have to be from your mouth. We've been lifted from the graveyard of sin and called to shout the gospel into the darkened world. The Men of Purpose will be studying the book of Ephesians in this video series led by pastor and author J.D. Greear. We will meet on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month from 8:00 – 9:30 AM. Make your plans now to be with us as we delve into what Paul is trying to teach the people of Ephesus and us. If you have questions, contact Jerry Cook (717) 825-1986.

=================================================================

The service is designed to place this decision in God’s hands, as He works through the hearts of His faithful. Please plan on attending and cast your vote for this important ministry position. The service will be short (about ½ hour in length).
