|Grade Levels: |Pre-K through 1st |
|Curriculum Areas: |Language Arts |
| |Speaking and Listening |
| |Informational Resources |
|Measurable Objectives: |TLW order different-sized objects from little to big. |
| |TLW click, drag, and hold objects using a computer mouse. |
|LA Content Standards: |Identify a computer mouse and its purpose (i.e., to navigate the screen) (PK-LL-L5) (ELA-5-E1) |
| |Describe people, places, things (e.g., size, color, shape), locations, and actions from a story read aloud |
| |(ELA-4-E3) |
| |Use technology to produce class work (ELA-5-E4) |
|Technology Standards: |Technology Productivity Tools (Resource Access and Utilization Foundation Skill) |
| |Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. |
| |Students use productivity tools to work collaboratively in developing technology-rich, authentic, |
| |student-centered products |
|Technology Connection: |Microsoft Word |
| |Microsoft Clip Art |
| |Printer |
| |Thinking Map Software |
|Procedures: |Note: Students love to spend time on the computer, especially in early childhood. Why not use that time to |
| |practice classroom skills? In this lesson, students use the computer mouse to order sets of clip art in a Word |
| |document. You can choose to complete this lesson in a lab, at a set of classroom computers, or at a single |
| |computer. Walk through the following steps with the student, a small group of students, or the entire class, |
| |allowing students with advanced skills to help others. TT may want to create a folder on the desktop or in My |
| |Documents with the files attached to this lesson so they will be all in one place. |
| |Anticipatory Set: TTW show students 3 objects from the class. TTW order those objects from smallest to largest.|
| |TTW will use a Tree Map to write words that mean the same as small, medium, and big. |
| |Modeling: TTW demonstrate how to double-click and open the file. TTW do it several times. Double clicking is a |
| |hard thing to do for little one. TTW show them how to keep their hand still as they click. |
| |Guided Practice: Then TTW watch as students open the file (If students have very basic computer skills, you |
| |might want to open the file for them.) TTW tell the students to open the file that is named “1”. Remind |
| |students of classroom activities or discussions in which they learned about ordering objects from littlest to |
| |biggest. TTW demonstrate how to click, hold, and drag the smallest object in a set (such as the smallest Santa |
| |hat out of the three on the template), and watch them follow your instructions. TSW close that file. They will |
| |say “No” to saving the changes. Now they will open the file named “2”. TT will do this one with the students |
| |just like the first one. Then practice one more time with file “3”. |
| |Independent Practice: TSW complete file “4” in the same manner as before. TSW type his or her name on their |
| |paper. (Those students who may have problems typing TT may want to type it for them.) TSW print their work this|
| |time. TSW turn this in to TT. |
| |Review/Closure: TTW ask for a volunteer to get an object from the classroom and bring it to the front of the |
| |class. TTW then ask a volunteer to get an object smaller than the first object. Finally TTW ask a third |
| |volunteer to find an object that is larger than the first and second object. The objects will be placed near |
| |the board so TT can label them little, medium, and big. |
|Materials: |Computers |
| |Items from the classroom |
|Assessment: |TTW assess the student’s independent work. |
| |Observe and evaluate each student's |
| |ability to order objects from little to big on their printed worksheet. |
| |ability to use the mouse (click, hold, drag) effectively. |
| |comfort level with using a computer |
