You will receive points for a wide variety of assignments and assessments. These will include homework, quizzes, labs, projects, and exams.  Additionally, you will be required to have a 3-ringed binder specifically for science, and your grade will also include a periodic check of your binder organization.  Your grade will be based on your percent of the total possible points. This is calculated by dividing your total number of points earned by the total number of points possible in the class.

As a member of the class there are certain expectations and responsibilities for each person.  The expectations include but are not limited to: coming to class prepared, having appropriate materials, taking notes, not disrupting the class, answering/asking questions and working cooperatively in lab groups and turning in all assignments.

Classroom Expectations

1.  Come to class on time; prepared to participate. That means when the tardy bell rings, you are IN your seat with homework and materials out.

2.  RESPECT! Have respect for yourself, for your fellow students, and for me. Everyone has the right to learn, and I have the right to teach. Impeding that right is disrespectful, and will not be tolerated.

3. Everyone has a voice. You should feel comfortable expressing yourself in my class, BUT only one person should be talking at a time, whether it be me or another student, unless otherwise specified.

4. CELL PHONE USE IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED! If your cell phone is visible, it will be confiscated, and your parent or guardian will be required to pick it up at the attendance office.

5. No food is allowed in the science classroom unless approved by instructor.

6. Water (in a sealable container) will be allowed in the classroom unless we are having lab. This is a revocable privilege.  No other drinks are allowed at any time.

7. You may use the bathroom pass only for emergencies. Please try and use the bathroom prior to or after class. Please do not abuse the bathroom pass.

8. Class end when the bell rings, not 5 minutes before the bell. Please refrain from packing up items before the bell.

8. At the end of class, you must remain in your seat until the teacher dismisses you. THE BELL DOES NOT DISMISS YOU! If any student is hovering around the door, or attempts to leave before they are dismissed, they will be instructed to sit back down and the entire class must wait for the teacher to give the okay to leave.

8.  You are responsible for your actions.  Think before you act.

Late and Makeup Work

Any work that is submitted after the assigned due date will be accepted with no penalty if it is turned in no later than the very next time our class meets. Work turned in later than the next class period will have a 50% penalty. Once a unit is complete, and the unit test is taken, no more late work for that unit may be turned in.

Absences:  Make up work is the responsibility of the student! If you are absent, it is up to YOU to go online to my website (mrholz.). There you will find the agenda for each class, copies of the classwork and homework, as well as additional resources. I will also have an “Absent” binder for your period that will contain the same information. You are welcome to talk to me after class for clarification on what you missed. You will officially have one day to makeup any missed work for each day you are absent.

Unit Test Corrections – After each Unit Test, you will have 1 week from the day the graded test is returned to complete your Unit Test Corrections. Guidelines for the test corrections will be given prior to your first unit test.

Discipline

In a culture of respect and responsibility the expectation is that students will treat each other as well as teachers and staff with respect.  Therefore, words or actions that are disrespectful or that prevent us from accomplishing our tasks will be dealt with using the following discipline procedures.

1. Verbal warning

2. Send outside → private conversation with teacher

3. Call parents

4. Referral to Vice Principal

Materials

1.       Three ring binder w/ dividers (1 divider for each unit = at least 7) FOR SCIENCE CLASS ONLY

2.       Binder paper

3.       Pens, pencils, erasers

4.       Calculator (must bring to school every day)

5.       Colored pencils for projects/drawing

6. Ruler

7. Planner

How to be successful in Earth Science:

• Be in class every day.

• Take pride in your work.

• Be organized.

• Have a good working relationship with others in the class.

• Be open with the teacher about difficulties you are having learning the material or things in the classroom which are impeding your learning.  Seek help when needed!

• Be consistent in your daily work.

• Prepare carefully for exams.

• Look for things in the subject (Earth Science) that interest you or connect to your life.

• Be honest. You can be a person of integrity every day.

Academic Honesty: Any form of cheating or plagiarism is unacceptable. Using another person’s words, ideas, or work as your own will result in a ZERO for that test, quiz, project, or assignment. Additionally, any student who knowingly allows another student to use his or her assignment will also receive a ZERO. Administration and parents will be contacted in cases of academic misconduct. Any additional offenses may result in a failing grade in the class, as well as other possible consequences.
