October Newsletter

2014

The Director’s Corner

I hope this newsletter finds you and your family well as we enter the beautiful season of Autumn. Things here at the preschool are “Falling(” into place very well! The children are getting used to their class routines and social interactions as well as becoming more independent. They are remembering their Bible verses, learning to love, to help, to be kind to each other, to take turns, to be under control, and many, many other things. Feel free to stop in and be a part of Music class in the Narthex on Tuesdays or Chapel time on Thursdays in the Sanctuary with Miss Janel.

October will be a busy month at HUMCP. We are looking forward to visiting Irons Mill Farmstead on October 2nd, school pictures on October 8th and our Harvest party on October 23rd. In addition, we are excited to begin a new reading program – watch for information to come home!!!

Finally, if you are looking for a church home, please know you are welcome here at HUM. During our 10:00 worship services the children are invited to join Pastor Matt for a Children’s Sermon and then are released to Rotation Sunday school – where they learn about the Bible through hands on lessons. Throughout the month, children visit different stations (drama, music, art and cooking) in which they experience the Bible story in many different ways. The Sunday school lessons in October will center around Nicodemus and Jesus. We also have wonderful adult and youth Sunday school classes. In fact, our three year old teacher, Miss Shelley, also leads our HUM youth group!

Blessings,

Miss Janel

Reminders

1. Please have your child use the restroom before dropping him/her off in the classroom. The preschool door opens 10 minutes before the classroom doors so that your child has time for this. Often children say they don’t need the restroom, and 15 minutes after their parents drop them off, they need to go. Thanks so much – it truly helps the teachers (.

2. Drive slowly in and out of the parking lot. Small children are moving in and around cars. Be especially careful when backing out of a parking spot. You might not be able to see a small child behind your car.

3. Park in the back lot when bringing your child to Preschool.

Academic and Spiritual Focus for October

We will be concentrating on being kind to one another by looking into the Bible which shows us how to live. We will learn that Jesus is the Light of the world and how we can let our light shine for Him. We will also learn that Jesus is the Good Shepherd who watches over and cares for us. Our crafts will center on apples, pumpkins, and other wonderful fall items. Our letters this month are D, E, F and G.

Outside Play

It is getting cooler. Whenever possible, we will take the children outside for play time. Please send a warm jacket. Flip-flops are not appropriate. They cause a safety concern on the playground.

Parent Table

Check out the resources on the parent table in the Preschool hallway. In addition, you can deposit your “Labels for Education” in the box, check out the scholastic forms, as well as find other preschool info!

Kids’ Klub

Beginning on October 15, HUM Church will begin its free Wednesday evening program for kids. Dinner will be served at 5:30, with a High Seas adventure from 6:00-6:45. We will also begin rehearsing for our Christmas musical during this time. The evening will conclude with a brief, kid-friendly worship service at 6:45.

• All décor for the party will center on the harvest, as will our games.

• The children will participate in a costume parade.

• As you have probably understood from reading the above about the emphasis and theme of our party, we are totally avoiding the concept of Halloween, and the frightening and pagan aspects of the season. Please follow these guidelines with your choice of costume for your child and/or yourself.

Tips for Parents of Preschoolers

By Reading Rockets

The early years are critical to developing a lifelong love of reading. You can't start reading to a child too soon!

Read together every day.

Read to your child every day. Make this a warm and loving time when the two of you can cuddle close together. Bedtime is an especially great time for

reading together.

Give everything a name.

You can build comprehension skills early, even with the littlest child. Play games that involve naming or pointing to objects. Say things like, "Where's

your nose?" and then, "Where's Mommy's nose?" Or touch your child's nose and say, "What's this?"

Say how much you enjoy reading together.

Tell your child how much you enjoy reading with him or her. Look forward to this time you spend together. Talk about "story time" as the favorite part of

your day.

Read with fun in your voice.

Read to your child with humor and expression. Use different voices for different characters. Ham it up!

Know when to stop.

If your child loses interest or has trouble paying attention, just put the book away for a while. Don't continue reading if your child is not enjoying it.

Be interactive.

Engage your child so he or she will actively listen to a story. Discuss what's happening, point out things on the page, and answer your child's questions.

Ask questions of your own and listen to your child's responses.

Read it again and again and again.

Your child will probably want to hear a favorite story over and over. Go ahead and read the same book for the 100th time! Research suggests that repeated

readings help children develop language skills.

Talk about writing, too.

Draw your child's attention to the way writing works. When looking at a book together, point out how we read from left to right and how words are separated

by spaces.

Point out print everywhere.

Talk about the written words you see in the world around you and respond with interest to your child's questions about words. Ask him or her to find a new

word every time you go on an outing.

Get your child evaluated if you suspect a problem.

Please be sure to see your child's pediatrician or teacher as soon as possible if you have concerns about his or her language development, hearing, or

sight.
