Role of the PresidentA student council president is like the captain of a ship. He or she needs to know hoe to handle many types of situations, be mature, organized, have sound judgment, and possess an ability to work with many different kinds of people. A captain who does not possess these abilities may face a mutiny by the crew, or even a shipwreck. A student council president who lacks the leadership ability to direct council affairs may face an unmanageable student body or council. Keeping the delicate balance between lead the student council and encouraging other officers, members, and interested students to take on leadership responsibilities is a challenge. In addition, the practical side of being president requires energy, careful management of time, and a good relationship with the student body.Outline of president’s responsibilities:Preside over all student council meetingsCoordinate the work of the council through the other officers and committees. Give assistance, guidance, and praise when appropriate.Act as a facilitator of group discussions by summarizing, clarifying, etc.Know basics of meeting procedures to ensure smooth meetingsMaintain frequent contact with faculty and administrators.Work closely with the student council advisor on all planning.Keep the principal informed of the student council activities.Attend community group meetings such as PTA to serve as a spokesperson for the student council.Speak at local events or meetings when required.Call executive meetings, as needed.Participate in students council sponsored activitiesIn addition to formal responsibilities, the president has a wide range of responsibilities to the officers as people and should constantly try to be aware of their needs and deal positively with them. The president’s responsibilities extend beyond the students within the student council. An important responsibility of a president is to serve as a spokesperson for the student body at large, since representing the students is the primary goal of the entire student council.Role of the Vice PresidentThe role of the vice president must be defined with the president. A good president is eager to help develop the vice presidential position into a creative and productive one, but sometimes the president must be reminded to do that. The secretary will need to attend every meeting to get all student council information, or arrange another member of the executive committee or an approved substitute.Outline of the secretary’s responsibilitiesPrepare and distribute the agenda for meetingsTake roll of the attendees at the meetingTake minutes of the proceedings of all student council meetingsReceive all main motions and amendments proposed during a meeting to be included in the minutesPrepare and distribute minutes in a timely manner.Maintain file of original agendas and minutesType all required letters of the president, vice president, and advisorMaintain files of student councilMaintain contact information of people with which the student council regularly works.Send thank you notes, cards, or correspondence to teachers, administrators, and support staff members.Produce a student council directoryRole of the TreasurerThe treasurer keeps accurate records of all financial transactions and periodically reports a summary of the monetary transactions to the executive committee and at meetings. The treasurer predicts how money will be used in the future and makes concrete suggestions for saving money and increasing efficiency. To do the job correctly, a treasurer must keep track o all expenditures and add the appropriate transactions to the books. The treasurer should be the person concerned with the regulating flow of money. Outline of treasurer’s responsibilities:Work closely with the president and vice president in preparing a workable year long calendar and budget. Oversee council expenses and revenuesMaintain an accurate and detailed financial recordGive monetary advice to the student council. Understand the policies the school has in regard to use of student finances and explain them when necessary.Role of the HistorianThis historian is charged with developing a pictorial and written record of the highlights of the year. This job can’t be done in a few nights! It is a year long effort. This position can be incorporated into an officer’s duties or it can be help by a person whose sole responsibility is this assignment.Outline of historian’s responsibilities Record the activities of the year through video, photos, written reports, and other materials and prepare a historical document such as a scrapbook, website, slide show, video, or CD. ................
