Maths Hub Teaching for Mastery Lead

Information and Application

The Teaching for Mastery Programme is being expanded in 2016-17. In order to support this expansion all Maths Hubs are identifying a Teaching for Mastery Lead to coordinate the work around the development of teaching for mastery across the hub. This document contains information and guidance in relation to:

• The requirements of the role

• Who should apply

• The qualifications and experience necessary for the role

• The application and selection process

Background

Since 2014, The NCETM and Maths Hubs have been working together to develop approaches to teaching for mastery within primary mathematics. This has been informed by the teaching of mathematics in high performing South East Asian jurisdictions. Several local and national projects have taken place within the Maths Hubs, including the England China Exchange Programme and The Textbook Project to develop insight and understanding of what it means to teach for mastery.

In 2015, the NCETM and Maths Hubs recruited 140 teachers (four per Maths Hub) to participate in a Mastery Specialists development programme. During this academic year, the teachers have been developing teaching for mastery approaches in their own school as well as working with interested schools through pilot Teacher Research Groups[1] (TRG).

In 2016-17, this first cohort of Mastery Specialists will all be leading Teaching for Mastery Work Groups, each with six schools and the second cohort of teachers will commence their training. The Mastery Lead is expected to work closely with the Mastery Specialists in establishing teaching for mastery across the schools involved in the programme, with a particular focus on leadership, management and sustainable development.

Also, in 2016-17, a second cohort of 140 Mastery Specialists will be recruited and developed by the NCETM and Maths Hubs.

The Teaching for Mastery Lead role

The purpose of the role is to:

• co-ordinate all the Maths Hub’s Teaching for Mastery Work

• liaise with key system leaders (e.g. NLEs, SLEs) and also leaders from schools, or groups of schools (e.g. MATs), that are already engaging with mastery approaches to encourage scaling up and embedding of the work

• provide support and development for head teachers in the Teaching for Mastery Work Group schools. Note that the person/people appointed would participate in the professional development elements of the Cohort 2 Mastery Specialists development programme (i.e. the induction day in July and the 3 residentials throughout the following academic year) unless already a Cohort 1 specialist

• support the Mastery Specialists and other mastery Work Group Leads including running hub-wide mastery team meetings

• work with the Maths Hub Leadership to recruit and select further Mastery Specialists

The role will require 1 day/week/year and be fully funded by the Maths Hub.

Who should apply?

• Any person who meets the person specification as outlined below and has the capacity to fulfil the requirements of the role.

• The role is one involving significant leadership, good organisational skills and enthusiasm for teaching for mastery

• Mastery Specialist teachers are welcome to apply providing that they can also fulfil their role as a mastery specialist teacher working within their own school and their six Work Group schools. Teaching for Mastery should be sufficiently established in their own schools, such that at least two year groups are being taught mathematics using a consistent mastery approach with the benefits exemplified in children’s learning.
