MICRORULERS

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRINTING & CUTTING

NOTE: This ruler can be used under a dissecting microscope to

estimate the size of objects to the nearest 0.1 mm (= 100 microns). The distance between adjacent lines is 0.2 mm (200 microns).

1) Print out a copy of this page for future reference.

2) You should already have placed one of these two microruler image files to your Desktop:

microrulers10-comPC.tif (for PC computers) or

microrulers10-comMAC.TIF (for MAC computers)

If not, go to this web address and download one of the files to your Desktop, as explained:

3) Now, use Adobe Photoshop (or Paint Shop Pro) to open the microruler image file from your Desktop.

4) Before printing, select “Image Size” from the menu to verify that the image dimensions are: width = 4 cm = 1.575” (8049 pixels) and height = 5 cm = 1.968” (10, 061 pixels).

5) For printing, use only a high resolution laser printer and high quality paper – an inkjet printer is not quite adequate. Select options which will print the image in a black-and-white mode at the highest resolution.

6) After printing, cut out the large rectangle containing the 10 microrulers.

7) To laminate the microrulers, lay the rectangle in the middle of a piece of transparent 2-inch-wide packing tape (thin tape is best). Lay another piece of tape on the other side of the rectangle, thus covering both sides of the paper rectangle with clear tape.

8) Next, use a sharp scissors to cut out each microruler into a rectangular shape that matches the shape shown at the bottom of the picture. One of the scissors cuts should be made down the middle of grid, as shown.

9) Use a strip of colored tape to attach a short ‘flag’ to the unprinted end of the ruler. Use the flag to hold onto the ruler when making measurements. The flag also allows you to quickly identify it when not in use.
