MORAVIAN STAR INSTRUCTIONS

MORAVIAN STAR INSTRUCTIONS

I. MATERIALS

1) COMPASS

2) RULER

3) PENCIL

4) POSTER BOARD (WITH THESE INSTRUCTIONS: 3 PIECES OF LARGE

POSTER BOARD SHOULD BE ENOUGH.)

5) GLUE

6) OPTIONAL: SPRAY PAINT, GLITTER, ETC.

II. CONSTRUCTION DESCRIPTION:

The construction consists of three (3) parts:

1) Base (shape of small rhombicuboctahedron)

2) Large points (stellations)

3) Small points (stellations)

Construct the base, the large and small points.

Glue small point on first. Then glue the large points.

HINT: Allow all pieces to dry completely before gluing them to the base.

III. BASE CONSTRUCTION:

1) Construct three strips of 1 ½ -inch squares.(Each side of each square is 1 ½ inches.)

Be sure to draw a flap at one end of each strip.

Cut out each strip. Use the sharp end of your compass to score along the

lines to enable you to fold along each line easily. Glue the flap at each end to

the underside of square # 1. Allow each strip to dry.

III. BASE CONSTRUCTION: (CONTINUED)

2) Arrange the three strips, which now take on a circular shape in the position

outlined by the following pattern. The dark triangular sections below will actually be

triangular holes in the base.

Glue the squares that lie on top of each other together.

IV. CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE POINTS (STELLATIONS):

1) Each large point is 8 inches long.

2) To construct each one, stretch your compass to 8 inches. (If your compass does not

reach 8 inches, attach a longer pencil to the pencil of your compass and try again.)

3) Mark an 8-inch arc through a line segment as shown below.

4) Mark four 1 ½ -inch arcs on the arc above as shown below.

Carefully connect the tip of the point to each arc intersection.

IV. CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE POINTS (STELLATIONS) (CONTINUED):

5) Construct flaps on the sides as shown below.

Use the sharp end of your compass to

score along all lines to make folding easier.

6) After folding, glue long flap to the underside as indicated above.

7) Construct 18 of these large points.

V. CONSTRUCTION OF SMALL POINTS (STELLATIONS):

1) Each small point is 5 inches long and is constructed in the same manner as the

large points except that only three 1 ½ -inch arcs are marked as shown below.

2) Construct 8 small points.

VI. FINAL STEPS:

1) When all points and the base are completed, begin the final phase by gluing the small

points on first. Each small point fits into one of the 8 triangular holes on the base.

SPECIAL NOTE: IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HANG THE STAR ONCE IT IS

COMPLETED OR WHILE THE POINTS ARE STILL BEING ATTACHED,

FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE:

1) Select one of the two-square surfaces (a section in which two squares are

glued on top of one another.

2) Pierce the center of the square with a needle and attach fishing line through

the hole. To secure the fishing line, a button can be secured on the under side

of the square. Two holes may be required.

3) Once the fishing line is secured, the fishing line can be threaded through the

large point that is going to be glued to that section of the base.

4) DO NOT SECURE FISHING LINE TO A POINT ALONE. IT IS NOT

STRONG ENOUGH TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF THE STAR ONCE

IT IS FINISHED.

2) When the small points have been attached, proceed to the large ones. The flaps may

be turned under or out, depending on personal preference.

3) Once the star is complete, clear fingernail polish can be applied to the tip of each

point for extra firmness.
