Position Summary:

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Director participates as part of the Executive Leadership team for SMART Reading. The Director leads the programming across the state providing leadership and guidance to program staff. The Program Director develops annual and long-range plans, while piloting and evaluating innovative program models designed to meet the organization's mission and vision. The Program Director maintains a strong network and presence with education and literacy leaders statewide, while continually evaluating changes in educational trends and curriculum that may impact SMART Reading.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program Leadership

Lead strategic planning process for statewide programming and collaborate in leading organizational priorities and planning efforts.

Lead Senior Program Manager team in developing and implementing strategic initiatives and process improvement efforts

Provide regular and proactive communication, expectations, structures and tools for program staff across the state.

Play a key leadership role in advancing equity in the program and organization, with an emphasis on racial equity.

Lead development of new and innovative program integration efforts with the recent merger of the Children's Book Bank, develop and pilot new models for expanding service to new areas and diverse populations.

Lead development and management of statewide program budget. Lead consultation projects with outside agencies and work with

Executive Leadership team to develop new earned income opportunities. Communicate with the Board regarding program trends, service updates and strategic program direction. Meet with and present to internal and external stakeholders and audiences, including donors. Support and position Executive Director to communicate SMART's impact to educational leaders throughout the state. Assume ultimate responsibility for program quality and effectiveness, working in close partnership and collaboration with the Director of Quality Assurance and Data management

Program Personnel

Lead the Metro Program Area and supervise the Metro Program Staff and staff implementing Children's Book Bank programming.

Work closely with Area Directors to maintain full view of program operations and staffing statewide, set expectations, support professional growth, evaluate performance and guide decision-making for Area leadership

Plan and lead regular statewide management and staff meetings

Community Engagement

Lead efforts to build strong community partnerships with an emphasis on relationship-building in communities of color

Provide leadership and strategy for community outreach and events Represent SMART in the community with a focus toward expanding

networks and awareness

Operations

Ensure SMART program policies, materials and strategies are implemented equitably and are developed with racial equity and inclusion as a priority focus

Assume ultimate responsibility for the implementation of volunteer training, recruitment, support and retention, with an emphasis on racial equity and inclusion in close partnership with senior program staff.

In partnership with the Director of Finance and Administration, lead volunteer risk management policy and procedures

Provide budget oversight and support to field staff for program expenditures

VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT:

SMART Reading is possible because more than 5,000 volunteers contribute their time, energy and experience to helping us carry out our mission; that means volunteers account for nearly 100 percent of the people working on the ground to deliver SMART Reading's proven literacy support and book program. Because of this, all SMART Reading employees work and interact with volunteers in varying capacities.

SMART Reading employees understand the value of our volunteers and ensure their interactions with volunteers are appreciative and professional.

Because volunteers are donating their time and talents to SMART Reading, employees may need to be flexible and solution-oriented when it comes to expectations around deadlines, communication, ability to attend meetings, etc.

SMART Reading employees publicly acknowledge the importance of volunteers to the organization, providing ample recognition and praise for their contributions when speaking about SMART Reading in external settings.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Management experience and demonstrated ability to lead effectively as part of Executive Leadership team, and to successfully perform the planning, leadership, reporting and administrative responsibilities of this position.

Inclusive leadership and relationship building skills and capacity. Strategic thinker with strong project management skills. Demonstrated ability to design and implement program

improvements. Ability to sort for priorities and manage your time well. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated personal commitment to racial equity.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

Required: o 5-7 years of relevant program experience o 3-5 years of management and supervision experience

Preferred: o Bachelor's and/or advanced degree in a related field o Experience in the PreK-12 school system a plus o Additional experience in one or more of the following fields: early childhood, literacy, volunteer management, mentoring and program evaluation o Non-profit experience o Understanding of program evaluation, data management and analytics

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to frequently use a computer at a desk and is occasionally required to stand, walk, and/or sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Accommodations are available. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
