JOB DESCRIPTION / MAIN PURPOSE

The Connect Chagos Project Support Officer will play a key short term role in the ensuring the continuation of the Connect Chagos project. As part of ZSL’s ongoing work focused on the Chagos marine reserve Connect Chagos is an outreach and environmental education project to members of the Chagossian community based both in the UK and overseas. Through a suite of community days, nature taster sessions and the Connect Chagos Environmental Training Course the project aims to connect Chagossian people in the UK and overseas with their natural heritage as well as building employable skills.

Key accountabilities

▪ Take the project lead role on the Connect Chagos. This involves supporting both the Connect Chagos Community Officer and Connect Chagos intern with their daily tasks and ensure a high quality in all aspects of the project.

▪ Work with Marine & Freshwater Programme Co-ordinator (EDGE Corals & Connect Chagos) to ensure smooth running of all aspects of the Connect Chagos project.

▪ Lead on the creation, development, delivery and evaluation of one - two tailored sessions per month to the UK Chagossian community ( Crawley and Manchester)

▪ Lead on compiling the Connect Chagos end of year report in collaboration with other members of the project team.

▪ Lead on the organisation & logistics of planning the Connect Chagos Environment Training course for summer 2015.

▪ Provide logistical support for individuals who have been awarded Connect Chagos bursaries and those who have been selected to take part in the Chagos scientific expedition visit.

▪ Liaise with Connect project partners such as RSPB and Tilgate Park to continue positive relations and enable future events

▪ Build partnerships with other organisations such as the Natural History Museum in London

▪ Work with the ZSL Evaluation Coordinator in the collection of research data connected to the Connect Chagos programmes

▪ Work to improve all aspects of the Connect Chagos experience for community members

▪ Attend and actively contribute to internal and external meetings and conferences as required

▪ Undertake such other duties as may be required by the Head of Discovery and Learning or the Marine & Freshwater Programme Co-ordinator (EDGE Corals & Connect Chagos)

JOB DESCRIPTION ANALYSIS

A. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

1. VOCATIONAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS

• Honours degree level in biological/environmental science or social science (or equivalent)

2. EXPERIENCE

Essential

• Proven experience in project management and multi-stakeholder management is essential

• Ability to write high quality reports and use Gantt charts effectively to coordinate all aspects of the project

• Proven use of various social media tools to promote and communicate with project stakeholders

• Extensive experience working in engaging communities either in the UK or in other countries

• Experience designing and delivering training programmes in either a formal or informal environment

• Recognised excellence in presenting public talks/shows/events to a range of different audiences

• Acknowledged excellence in communicating conservation and environmental messages to a wide range of audiences

Desirable

• French or Creole speaking and written strongly desirable

• Demonstrable knowledge of working in a zoo or animal related environment

• Experience of conducting conservation field work (either biological or social research)

• Knowledgeable of the work of ZSL, BIAZA, EAZA and the wider zoo community

• Documented ability in producing creative, innovative and dynamic ideas and outputs for a range of different scenarios and projects.

• An excellent, supportive team player with the ability to work collegially and dynamically with a wide range of people and departments.

• Self-motivated and uses initiative to seek opportunities to produce innovative ideas about learning in zoos

• Available to work some weekends, evenings and some Bank Holidays as required

B. RESPONSIBILITY

1. HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

▪ The post holder will support and work collaboratively with members of the ZSL London Zoo Discovery and Learning and ZSL Conservation Programmes department

▪ Responsible for day to day management, recruiting and inducting new staff, managing the departments PDR process and annual work plan production

2. PHYSICAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

▪ Support the Head of Discovery and Learning monitoring and acting on maintenance needs for all equipment and resources associated with the Discovery and Learning department

▪ Under the guidance of the Head of Discovery and Learning or the Marine & Freshwater Programme Co-ordinator (EDGE Corals & Connect Chagos), work within the budget to cover resources and equipment for a range of learning programmes

3. COMMUNICATION

▪ Excellent communication with all departments regarding all aspects of the Connect Chagos is vital to ensure the smooth running of these programmes

▪ Processing information and requests from other departments relating to Connect Chagos and other special events

▪ Communicate to all level of ZSL staff to promote the Connect Chagos programmes

4. LIASION

▪ Effectiveness in this post will ensure the effective and efficient running of various learning activities and programmes that meets the audience’s needs and expectations.

▪ Liaison with D&L colleagues to collaborate and strengthen existing programmes and to provide innovative new programmes

C. MENTAL DEMANDS

1. JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING

• Work to the Connect Chagos strategy as directed by the Head of Discovery and Learning and make judgements and decisions that align these aims and objectives

• Daily decisions will include task allocation and problem solving

2. ORIGINAL THOUGHT AND PROBLEM SOLVING

• Responsible for generating ideas and catalysing the development of original, creative concepts for Connect Chagos programmes

• Required to support the Head of Discovery and Learning to ensure the smooth operation of a 7/7 department, involving daily problem solving (rostering, equipment, content decisions – and an annual cycle of development decisions on the daily programme)

3. CONCENTRATION

• Creative development work, planning work and presentation work all require intense concentration; these are required several times each week

4. FLEXIBILITY

• High levels of flexibility required in order to respond to daily problems across a range of areas (staff, schools, events in the zoo, equipment, visitors)

• Tasks vary throughout the year and can be interrupted at any time by unplanned requirements.

D. WORKING CONDITIONS

• Some Connect Chagos programmes will involve spending prolonged time outside, even in inclement weather

• Occasional early and late working will be required to accommodate deadlines or special events

• Flexibility to work weekends, evenings and Bank holidays as required
