High Life

For all Delta people who have truly touched the High Life/

Dear PCN,

Group Section……

Mark’s Remarks:

Why “HIGH LIFE”?

Well, now that you have been around for a while and we have published 15 issues of this newsletter, you may be curious as to why it’s called the High Life. Maybe it is time to explain why I chose the title. Am I fixated on days gone by? Am I glorifying the past? Am I simply a few bricks shy of a load? Heaven knows that the current aviation situation has its set of challenges.

So getting real….. am I a little looney? Yeah, probably! Likely guilty of all of the above. Delta employees and this pilot group, however, have all lived a full and an amazing life. One that I would call the high life. Some of us have touched the “high life” in other areas (besides or instead of) our time at Delta. For me, though, I experienced a tremendous amount of firsts and mountain peaks while I was at Delta. It was and remains the most rewarding time of my life and for many years I felt like the employee group was part of my extended family. The actual job could not have been better for me. I got paid for doing exactly what I love to do. If I had to bet, you did too. Isn’t that the description of what one would describe as his/her perfect job? Well, if it wasn’t perfect for me, it came mighty close. I am going to try and get over the events that led to the mass exodus of pilots that ended in 2005, which in the end included me. I try to subdue those negative thoughts in favor of remembering the great days I spent with friends doing things I never thought that I would do. Singing karaoke in Toronto, attending Mass at the Notre Dame, hiking the mountains of Montana, playing craps in Vegas, skiing at Red Lodge Mountain, all in addition to the thousands of hours and seeing the zillions of views of which mortal man are not usually allowed to see.

One such flight out of ORD to BNA the northern lights were so bright that the whole northern sky was on fire. Capt Ted Langworthy turned and did a double take. What happened next forever changed my career perspective at Delta. He did something that seemed out of the ordinary. He did something that brought the passengers in to an existential experience that we got to enjoy on a frequent basis. He turned the airplane perpendicular to the lights (the first time I witnessed a “for-passenger” deviation) and picked up the PA to draw attention to, and allow, the moment to be shared. Of course when passenger got off, they glowed. In short, it was but one of the experiences of the “high life” and memories of it were and are so rich and full. Like a short time NFL player wishing his career will last for 30 years, we too never wanted to see the end. The truth is, all good things come to an end.

Now, as I serve this group, many of those great memories come flooding back like a sunami. Sometimes as I see a name, of one you subscribers, I snicker as I remember something about your high life. A few times I laugh out loud. In all honesty, my high life has risen higher because I got to meet so many of you.

Oh, its not over! The high life is ongoing. And while there is a low blow here and there, by an large, everyone of us have been blessed to slip the surly bonds for and with the greatest of the great. When you mention high life, each one of us can relate. So each week, I hope to send a little your way. Mark

Mark’s Tidbits:

Mark,

I am having trouble getting High Life.  I received your email saying it is available and to "click here" to open it, but the link is black and not blue and does nothing when I click it.  I can open it by copying and pasting the address, but is that the way it should work?  When Dave sent emails I just clicked to open and it was right there.

Thanks,    John Plain

Notices not “clickable”? - As John says above, he is having trouble clicking on the URL links inside the notices to say…… go to the High Life. Well, the answer is simple. Set your email account to HTML. With that change every URL address received is automatically made hot. If you cannot do that, then copy and paste the URL into the address line of your browser. Better yet, if you don’t have a HTML account, than save the links to our website and google group in your Favorites. When a notice comes in, simply go to your saved link. See, easy as pie. For some of you late arrivers, this is a different system than before, but it has advantages. One such advantage is that our content of our notices are archived inside the group site. You no longer have to save past messages in your own email inbox.

THE NEW WIFI IS HERE:  No more entering that long code that a previous administration sadistically set up for internet access in the crew lounge.  T Mobile has installed a new WiFi service that requires no passcodes.  It is an unsecured system, your puter will automatically find it. This WiFi should be accessible at airports directly above crew lounges as well.

Delta awaits city’s word on new lease

Hartsfield-Jackson deal would be cost-saver.Until new international terminal opens, expenses to hover at same levels.

By Kelly Yamanouchi

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Atlanta’s City Council on Monday will take up Delta Air Lines’ proposed new lease at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and by most accounts, Delta will be getting a bargain if the deal goes through.

As city officials work on finalizing the lease between Hartsfield-Jackson and Delta, the proposal is to keep Delta’s basic airport expenses at roughly the same level, aside from cost increases when the new international terminal opens in 2012.

Delta Pilots Who Landed on Taxiway Set to Avoid Punishment

By ANDY PASZTOR

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

Two Delta Air Lines Inc. pilots who mistakenly landed a jetliner filled with 182 passengers on a taxiway at Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport last month are expected to avoid punishment, according to people familiar with the matter.

The weather and visibility were both good on Oct. 19, when the Delta pilots mistakenly landed their widebody Boeing 767 jet on a taxiway instead of a parallel runway. Despite the error, both pilots are expected to keep their licenses and their jobs, these people said. The pilots are currently suspended, but Delta intends to retrain them and return them to flight status.

Delta suspends jailed pilot

By Megan Matteucci

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

7:26 a.m. Friday, November 13, 2009

Delta Air Lines has suspended a pilot while officials investigate charges he tried to run over two Griffin police officers with his private plane.

Dan Wayne Gryder, 48, remains in the Spalding County jail, charged with two counts of aggravated assault and obstruction. He is being held without bond and is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, the sheriff’s office said.

Gryder, a Delta pilot and private aircraft instructor, was arrested Wednesday at the Griffin-Spalding Airport.

“He is suspended pending the completion into the investigation in this incident,” Delta spokesman Anthony Black said Thursday.

The FAA is also investigating Wednesday's incident and could revoke  Gryder's pilot's license or issue additional sanctions.

Union issues still vex Delta

Flight attendants and mechanics are in play.Rule change for labor elections boosts odds workers will organize.

By Kelly Yamanouchi

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sunday, November 15, 2009

More than a year after Delta Air Lines closed its acquisition of Northwest Airlines, it has yet to solve one of the most vexing issues in the merger —- whether flight attendants and ground workers will unionize.

A flurry of recent activity by the National Mediation Board and two unions could significantly alter the story of the merger. It’s likely to be months longer before employees vote on labor representation, prolonging the time it takes to complete the merger. And, in what could be a historic shift for Delta, there’s a significantly higher chance of unionization among the flight attendants and ground workers.

American Airlines Sets the Record Straight on Virgin Atlantic's Frivolous and Misguided Claims

American Airlines today issued the following statement in response to a Virgin Atlantic filing made today with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

• Press Release

• Source: American Airlines

• On 3:26 pm EST, Thursday November 12, 2009

FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Once again, Virgin's comments are long on accusations and rhetoric and short on the facts. American is opposed to a Delta-Japan Airlines (JAL) tie-up for the same reason we are confident our transatlantic immunity application will be approved: to preserve and enhance competition.

SkyTeam with a Delta-JAL combination would account for nearly 60 percent of U.S.-Tokyo passengers, as opposed to oneworld's approximate 44 percent share of U.S.-London passengers. AA and British Airways only account for about 40 percent of U.S.-U.K. traffic, whereas Delta-JAL would consolidate the positions of the two largest U.S.-Japan carriers with more than 60 percent share of U.S.-Japan passengers, leaving oneworld with just a 6 percent share.

BA, Iberia merger hinges on pension deficit

• On 8:40 am EST, Friday November 13, 2009

By Tracy Rucinski and Rhys Jones

MADRID (Reuters) - British Airways' (LSE:BAY.L - News) pension fund deficit could yet scupper its planned merger with Spain's Iberia (MCE:IBLA.MC - News), as the UK airline still has to agree the size of the multi-billion pound shortfall with the fund's trustees.

Iberia, which on Friday posted a bigger than expected nine-month operating loss, agreed with BA on Thursday to create a group with a combined market value of $7 billion as they continue to battle the worst industry downturn in decades.

But BA's pension deficit was one of the main stumbling blocks in the 16-month merger talks and was a key negotiating point for Iberia, which is reserving the right to back out of the deal if the funding hole turns out to be bigger than the 3 billion pounds ($5 billion) which analysts have forecast.

Japan Airlines Swings to $1.5B Loss

Joseph Woelfel

11/13/09 - 04:18 AM EST

TOKYO (TheStreet) -- Japan Airlines swung to a loss of 131.2 billion yen ($1.46 billion) in the six months ended Sept. 30 amid an operating environment it said "remained extremely severe."

A year earlier, Asia's biggest airline by revenue, posted net income of 36.6 billion yen.

The airline confirmed in a statement Friday that it has turned to the Japanese government for help with its restructuring.

JAL said it is currently "formulating the proposed business revitalization plan" and was working with the government through a "turnaround procedure" that will enlist the assistance of a private operator.

JAL said it was withdrawing its forecasts the fiscal year ending in March 2010.

The airline said international and domestic travel, as well as cargo traffic, all declined during the six-months period, pulling its revenue down 29% to 763.9 billion yen.

JAL has a 10-year partnership with AMR's(AMR Quote) American Airlines, which includes code-sharing, frequent flyer reciprocity and membership in Oneworld. But with JAL undergoing a restructuring, Delta(DAL Quote) is seeking to replace American as JAL's partner.

DP3 Letter to Anderson regarding the enrollment problem:

Delta Pilots’ Pension Preservation Organization, Inc.

P.O. Box 76362

Atlanta, GA 30358

November 9, 2009

Mr. Richard Anderson

Chief Executive Officer

Delta Airlines, Inc.

1030 Delta Boulevard

Atlanta, GA 30320-6001

Cc: Mr. Rob Kight, VP Compensation, Benefits and Services

Dear Mr. Anderson:

Many retired Delta pilots received the recent announcement of a one-time COBRA enrollment opportunity from Delta with a great deal of joy and appreciation. Hundreds of retired Delta pilots were not eligible for the previous COBRA enrollment opportunity in 2007 because they were either not yet age 60 and/or they were not previously enrolled in either the Delta Family Care Medical Plan (DFCMP) or the Delta Pilots Medical Plan (DPMP). In either case, these retirees were shut out of the primary method of capturing the Health Care Tax Credit (HCTC) offered by the IRS.

But it was with an equal degree of sadness to find out that the COBRA plan as offered by Delta for 2010 did not receive approval from the IRS for the HCTC. The offer of COBRA insurance was therefore withdrawn by Mr. Rob Kight in his letter of November 5, 2009. Mr. Kight offered two options for those who had previously elected the COBRA options in the benefit enrollment process:

1. Choose another offering from the menu of available plans by the end of the enrollment period; or,

2. If no choice has been made by the end of the enrollment period, then the coverage would default to the Standard Medical Option or Out of Area Medical Option of the DFCMP based on zip code.

Mr. Kight did not find it appropriate to extend the enrollment period beyond the previously published 17th of November. DP3 feels that many retirees may have left town for the coming Thanksgiving holiday thinking that their enrollment duties were complete. In order to increase the possibility of retirees making the right choice of healthcare policy for 2010, and noting the fact that Delta recently extended the annual enrollment period for active employees, DP3 asks that the enrollment period for retired pilots be extended to December 1, 2009.

Mr. Kight’s ruling that the default coverage for those who fail to make the appropriate change from the defunct COBRA option would be placed in one of the two options of the DFCMP is grossly unfair. The retiree will be required to pay 100% of the DFCMP premium, when, as you know, if the retiree and/or spouse are over age 60, he or she would only be required to pay 51% of the DPMP premium. DP3 is certain that the only reason most retirees would be purchasing the DFCMP would be to capture the HCTC. Many of these retirees are already enrolled in HCTC eligible coverage through a spousal or state program and would probably choose “no coverage” from Delta now that the new COBRA offer has been rescinded. Because each retiree’s situation is different, a “one size fits all” solution does not work in this case.

DP3 requests that Delta personally contact each retiree who previously selected the cancelled program who has not updated their medical insurance selection by the enrollment deadline. If Delta cannot establish contact within a reasonable amount of time, the company could assign default coverage, but the retiree should have the right to drop the default coverage at any time prior to January 1, 2010. Rather than assign these retirees the DFCMP as the default option, we suggest that Delta assign them the medical insurance program which they chose last year.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

Will Buergey

Chairman, DP3

Subject: Age 65 Cobra once again

Mark I believe you said that you & your wife were anticipating this "faux HCTC" coverage thru Delta as was I.

I was doing some research today that may help some of us between 60 & 65 and getting a PBGC monthly check ( a qualifying event). That would be a Blue Cross /Blue Shield (Florida in my case) HCTC qualified plan (they have 3). The problem is that it would then take time to get an IRS eligibility  letter, a letter from Delta showing proof of existing insurability submitted to Blue Cross and then sending their paperwork off to IRS with their HCTC registration form and proof of premium from B.C.

To do this would certainly put one outside the Delta enrollment period (choosing 'No Coverage') and 'crossing fingers'. My solution would be to elect High Value option (or any plan) for 2010 &at least as long until accepted by HCTC thru B.C., etc. This would prevent any lapse in one's coverage.

Don't know if this helps anybody or not.

Respectfully,

Don Piltz

DAL retired

Editor: I got your drift OK but slightly edited your writing Don, to post it. Yes, I was planning on opting back in. Of course now, that will not happen. However, as you well know there is nothing “faux” about HCTC. It isn’t the HCTC that is the phantom, but rather the opt-back-in Lifetime COBRA. There are a number of ways to get the HCTC subsidy, the “faux” lifetime Cobra opt-back-in option that was offered by Delta would have been but one of several ways to get it. The state qualified plan you talk about is a 2nd way. I am currently in a KY state qualified plan (Anthem-Blue) and am receiving the HCTC just fine. In fact, after receiving the IRS HCTC packet, I found it rather easy to get signed up and qualified. On the other hand, if you cant’ get it done expeditiously, I don’t see any problem with enrolling in any company group plan until you can get the coverage from the state qualified plan and approved by the HCTC, then dropping the company coverage.

TravelNet changes make ticket reissue easier online

November 10, 2009

Delta’s Information Technology and Pass Travel teams have made several enhancements to the TravelNet booking tool and some based on employee suggestions.

IT has restored buddy pass and yield fare ticket reissue capability so employees no longer need to call Reservation Sales to reissue buddy passes booked in the same flight listing as an employee. Additionally, employees can now reissue past-date buddy pass tickets online without calling Res.

The $25 Res reissue fee will be waived if TravelNet does not process the reissue correctly.

As TravelNet capabilities continue to improve, the working teams are looking to employees for feedback.

Several changes already have been made based on employee suggestions. Route availability for Northwest flights now is shown using the same Actual and Authorized formats as Delta flights. Also, more than one e-mail address can now be added to a listing, and users don’t have to pay the annual activation fee to deactivate or reactivate.

After a couple of months in, I certainly realize what a monumental effort that Dave Roberts had done. All kudos to his groundwork. Concerning the group, it is a complete honor to serve. I could be wrong, but I believe our assembled group of aviators are some of the finest and most principled flyers the industry has. And it is an honor to serve this group.

How can anyone be surprised about the recent fiasco with the HCTC? If you think that current management cares one bit about the well being of it's retired pilots then you are crazy. From the day Hollis was passed over for the job he was qualified to move in to, the decline of Delta as we knew it began. Replaced by a bunch of overpaid low class

thugs in Armani suits, the pieces were in place to destroy the airline. From the planned fraudulent bankruptcy, the abandoning of the retired pilots by ALPA to the mysterious disapearance of a bankruptcy judge who seemed to be getting too pilot friendly, it was one big thank you for thirty years of dedicated service. Editor: CD,  I don't know where you are at in this health care thing or your age.  So I don't know if the cobra withdrawal will mean anything to you. If you haven't received any “package” yet you need to call the ESC if you are the least bit interested in making an election in this year's open enrollment that ends on Nov 17th. Or simply log into the DeltaNet then look for the OPEN ENROLLMENT button. There you can get all the info you need. Or call 1-800-MyDelta for your printed packet.
