Verbo to be El verbo to be tiene especial importancia en ingl?s. En espa?ol corresponde a los verbos ser y estar. Observa las siguientes oraciones y nota c?mo el sentido del verbo depende del contexto y las palabras que lo acompa?an.
Ejemplo: Guillermo is Spanish, he is from Granada. / Guillermo es espa?ol, est? en Granada. Ejemplo: Rocio is in Spain with some friends. / Roc?o est? en Espa?a con unos amigos. A continuaci?n te presentamos algunos usos del verbo to be. ? Sirve para expresar la edad, en cuyo caso se traduce como tener: Ejemplos: Mary is 20 years old. / Mary tiene 20 a?os. I am 21. / Yo tengo 21 a?os. How old are you? / ?Cu?ntos a?os tienes? ? Para expresar las sensaciones tambi?n se emplea el verbo to be y equivale a tener en espa?ol. Ejemplos: Are you hungry? / ?Tienes hambre? He is thirsty. / ?l tiene sed. ? Tambi?n para hablar sobre el clima. En este caso se traduce como hacer. Ejemplos: It's windy. / Hace viento. It's very cold. / Hace mucho fr?o.

Las contracciones normalmente se utilizan en la forma oral y son caracter?sticas de un lenguaje informal. Las dos contracciones en las formas negativas se utilizan indistintamente.
Nota que las respuestas cortas afirmativas no se pueden contraer, las respuestas cortas negativas s?. Observa c?mo el signo de interrogaci?n s?lo se emplea al final de la oraci?n interrogativa, a diferencia del espa?ol en donde empleamos uno al inicio y uno al final.
