Summer Reading 2012—September 4, 2012
Dear Parents and Students,
Once again we are requiring all our current sixth and seventh graders to complete a summer reading project this year. This packet will count as the student’s first language arts grade for the upcoming school year.
For in-coming sixth grade students, it is optional but strongly recommended and students will receive extra credit for completing the project. In addition, the completed packet can count as one of the required book reports for the first nine weeks for all students.
Students are required to read one novel over the summer and complete a packet of activities for a language arts grade. We feel that this will keep students interested in reading, as well as prepare them for the year ahead. The book can be fiction, science fiction, a biography, autobiography, or anything else that interests your child.
The book students choose, however, must be:
• A chapter book
• Approximately 150-175 pages in length
• A new read (student has never read the book before)
We have prepared a list of book choices that we believe will keep the students’ interest as well as challenge their reading skills. We are also including a list of titles from Just Read Florida. We hope this will be helpful to you. As always, parents should preview their child’s reading choices to ensure appropriateness for their individual child.
After reading the book, students will be required to complete two of the three worksheets along with a brief summary and a cover sheet. This packet must be turned in by September 4, 2012. For your convenience this information can also be found on our school website.
Please help us in encouraging an interest in reading in your child. We look forward to working with you and teaching your child in the upcoming year.
Sincerely,
W.C. Pryor Language Arts teachers
