Dow Jones Industrial AverageTM Fact Sheet
[Pages:14]Dow Jones Industrial AverageTM
Fact Sheet
Stated Objective
To represent large and well-known U.S. companies. Covers all industries with the exception of Transportation and Utilities.
Key Features
-- The index is maintained by the Averages Committee. -- Components are added and deleted on an as-needed basis. For the sake of continuity, such changes are rare, and typically occur
following corporate acquisitions or other significant changes in a component company's core business. When one component is replaced, all of them are reviewed. -- While stock selection is not governed by quantitative rules, a stock typically is added only if the company has an excellent reputation, demonstrates sustained growth and is of interest to a large number of investors. Maintaining adequate sector representation within the index is also a consideration in the selection process. -- The index is price weighted. -- The Dow Jones Industrial AverageTM was first calculated on May 26, 1896.

Description
The S&P 500? is widely regarded as the best single gauge of large-cap U.S. equities. The S&P 500 is part of a series of S&P Dow Jones U.S. equity indices that can be used as mutually exclusive building blocks; the index does not overlap holdings with the S&P MidCap 400? or S&P SmallCap 600?. Together, they constitute the S&P Composite 1500?.

All information for an index prior to its Launch Date is back-tested, based on the methodology that was in effect on the Launch Date. Back-tested performance, which is hypothetical and not actual performance, is subject to inherent limitations because it reflects application of an Index methodology and selection of index constituents in hindsight. No theoretical approach can take into account all of the factors in the markets in general and the impact of decisions that might have been made during the actual operation of an index. Actual returns may differ from, and be lower than, back-tested returns.
