MTA Safety Guidelines-Music and Dance, Fall 2020 – 8/31/20Safety Committee:MTA Faculty and StaffKaren Larson, Chris McGinley, Ken Pereira, Gretchen Peters, Lee Anna Rasar, John Stewart, Nobu Yasuda, Frank Watkins, James ZwickyStudent RepresentativesEthan RichmondThe Safety Committee is charged with creating clear safety guidelines for staff and students, providing an orientation for students, monitoring the efficacy of the safety guidelines, and revising the guidelines throughout the course of the year.No absolute formula exists, but central to the process are 1) face masks, 2) distancing, 3) hygiene, and 4) ventilation. The following universal practices for UW-EC will be enforced strictly in the MTA Department: 1) Staff and students will wear appropriately fitting masks unless they are alone in a private office (or practice room). (See note below concerning private lessons.)2) Staff and students will maintain social distancing of at least 6 feet.3) Maximum room capacity based upon social distancing guidelines for COVID has been determined by University Administration. All room caps will be followed.4) Chairs and desks should be wiped down before use by students. Masks:It is the responsibility of students and faculty to acquire appropriate masks that allow them to perform their musical instruments. All singers and instrumentalists are required to wear masks throughout rehearsals, with the exception of solo singing in Opera Workshop or a similar situation. All dancers are required to wear masks while practicing.Whether a student is required to wear a mask during an applied lesson is determined by the applied instructor. All woodwind and brass players are to use coverings for the bells of their instruments while in rehearsals and practice rooms. Students and faculty are responsible for acquiring their own bell covers. (The use of 2-ply 80 denier nylon has proven effective.)Distancing: For indoor rehearsals, the maximum number of wind players and singers is 13. (Most rehearsal spaces will accommodate fewer musicians.) An exception is the use of Schofield Auditorium or Ojibwe Ballroom where more musicians could be accommodated.Pianists and string players must be at least 6 feet apart during rehearsals.Wind players must be at least 6 feet apart during rehearsals, with the exceptions of trombones who must be separated by a distance of 9 X 6 feet. Wind players will be arranged in straight lines with students facing the same direction.Singers must be at least 10 feet apart during rehearsals. Dancers can only dance alone, not with any other dancers. Students will abide by the designated markings on the floors in rehearsal rooms.Designated entrance and exit doors from rehearsal spaces will be followed. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, instructors are strongly encouraged to end class 5 minutes early to allow 15 minutes between classes. Students are discouraged from congregating in the halls before and after class. If more than one student is working in an office space, music library, etc., they must be a minimum of 6 feet apart and wear masks.Ventilation:The Facilities team has enhanced airflow and indoor air quality. Where possible, fresh air supply has been increased, and air handlers will be running before and after a building opens and closes. In addition, filters that have a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 13 – which means they can capture particulates that could carry the virus – have been installed.Outdoor music rehearsals are encouraged. (Outdoor rehearsals spaces need to be reserved in a similar manner as a room.) Outdoor dance rehearsals are encouraged. The maximum rehearsal length for wind players and singers is 30 minutes, followed by a 30-minute break. All dance rehearsals must be followed by a 30-minute break before the room is used again. Air purifiers will be used throughout the day in the following rooms: 1) HFA, Rm. 139- 3 air purifiers, 2) HFA, Rm. 143- 3 air purifiers, 3) HFA, Rm. 190- 2 air purifiers, 4) HFA, Rm. 133- 1 air purifier, 5) HFA, Rm. 135- 1 air purifier, 6) HFA, Rm. 244- 1 air purifier, 7) HFA, Rm. 246- 1 air purifier, 8) HFA, Practice Room Suite- 2 air purifiers, 9) Pablo, Rm. 327- 2 air purifiers.
