Unit 1 - Holiday Planning (Intermediate 1)
Unit 2 - Holiday Issues (Intermediate 1)
Unit 3 - Holiday Destinations (Intermediate 1)
In Unit 1 students will research various sources used to gather information while planning a holiday. They will also consider travel options, passport applications, health insurance and foreign currency.
In Unit 2, pupils consider the social, economic and environmental impact of tourism on a variety of destinations, and consider problems encountered while on holiday and methods of dealing with these issues.
In Unit 3, pupils complete their own research and produce detailed reports on selected holidays for their chosen client groups.
Given the consumer oriented nature of this Course, it is recommended that students visit local travel agencies and local tourist attractions.
Assessment
Students will be assessed by NAB items at the end of each unit. Christmas Leavers are normally able to complete two units by mid December. These units will be included on the SQA certificate awarded in August. If all three NABs are completed, pupil can sit the external examination in May/June which is a graded award.
Progression
Travel and Tourism courses are offered in Further Education Colleges.
Careers
The tourist industry is a major employer in South Ayrshire and across the UK. Examples of jobs include: air steward/hostess, working in a travel agency, tourist information centre, hotels or visitor attractions. Tourism is well placed to continue being successful in the UK as the pound weakens against other currencies making it a cheaper destination for those from the Eurozone and the USA.
