OVMS Spotlight

During the week of January 23, Owen Valley Middle School participated in the Great Kindness Challenge. The Great Kindness Challenge is one week devoted to performing as many acts of kindness as possible. OVMS kids joined over five million students in over eight thousand schools across the country, all actively seeking to make their school, their community and our world a better place. On Monday, all students were given a challenge sheet that listed 50 acts of kindness, and encouraged to perform as many kind deeds as they could during the week. "Smile at 25 people", "Whisper thank you to the librarian", and "Make someone laugh" were three of the fifty tasks given to the kids to accomplish. Throughout the week inspirational quotes were created and read by students during announcements to keep everyone focused on making this week a special one. A Kindness Wall was created in the cafeteria, where photos, sayings and signatures committing kids to being good to each other. A highlight of the week would include walking in on Wednesday morning and finding every locker tagged by a post-it note with a hand written message that let each kid know that they are awesome, or that when life throws them a curve ball, they should hit it out of the park. A favorite among the 186 7th grade notes encouraged the students to "Keep Swimming". The culminating activity had the kids spell out K M 1 7 in the bleachers for a photo that will be displayed at the school. K M represents the `Kindness Matters' mantra the students followed for the week, and hopefully will positively affect them for the balance of the year. The Great Kindness Challenge was planned and implemented by the National Junior Honor Society.
