Scientific Method:
• Know that the Scientific Method is a systematic approach to problem solving
• Know the steps of the Scientific Method
o observation, hypothesis, experiment, conclusion
• Know the difference between theory & law
o theory: explanation of why something happens in nature
o law: summery of what always happens
SI System of Measurement:
• Know the 7 basic fundamental units
• Understand how the prefixes are used to show larger and smaller increments of the basic units
• Be able to measure length, mass & volume using SI units
• Be able to perform one-step conversions within the metric system
o examples: convert meters to centimeters or liters to millimeters
• Know how to derive other units from the fundamental SI units
o Example: volume from length, width & height
• Be able to figure out the calibration of a measuring devise and calculate the true measurement of a substance using the devise
• Know how to measure the mass & volume of various objects as well as calculate density for each
• Be able to rearrange the density equation to solve for M or V, given values for 2 of the 3 variables
• Be able to perform percentage of error calculations
• Know the definitions of temperature & absolute zero
• Be able to convert temperature measurements from celsius to Kelvin
o convert °C to K
o convert K to °C
Graphing:
• know that the independent variable is what you are manipulating in an experiment
• know that the dependent variable is what is changing as a result of the independent variable in an experiment
• Be able to graph data correctly
• Know the characteristics of a good graph
o Label x-axis (horizontal side) of graph with independent variable
o Label y-axis (vertical side) of graph with dependent variable
o Be able to use an appropriate scale on both x and y axes
o Be able to draw a best-fit line through points plotted on graph
