The rate of fall-related emergency department visits and mortalities is greatest among seniors (65 years old and over). Most fall-related mortalities occur within the home of the injured individual, but a considerable number of fall-related mortalities occur within residential institutions. Impact awareness and strategy implementation around falls takes an entire community. We all play an important role in helping older adults and seniors to age well and stay independent, healthy and strong. Some of the following are steps that can be taken:A fall risk assessmentEngage in regular physical activity; move more, sit lessReview medicationsHave vision checkedAssess living space to make changes for safetySlow down; bring mindful awareness to movement and how we navigate activities of daily livingFor more information or to book a Fall Prevention Learning workshop, please contact SMART District Coordinator or visit vonsmart.ca5Move More – Sit LessOur bodies were built for motion not for stillness. Even if we need to sit, it’s important to incorporate movement and take standing breaks. More and more research indicates that to age well and prevent/manage chronic disease, we need to sit less, move well and move more.
