|Nursing Fundamentals -- Honors | |

|Description |
|This course is designed for students who are interested in medical careers. Nurse aide workplace fundamentals and resident |
|care skills are taught in this course. This course is an enhancement of the North Carolina Division of Health Service |
|Regulation Nurse Aide I curriculum. Students who successfully complete the course will be prepared to take the National Nurse |
|Aide Assessment Program NNAAP competency exam for Certified Nurse Aide I. A clinical internship of at least 40 hours in a |
|long-term care facility is required. |

|Special requirements |
|Pre-requisites: Health Science I and Health Science II. A minimum grade of “C” is recommended. |
|Students will be selected into the Nursing Fundamentals course based on GPA, attendance, and professional demeanor. Selected |
|students will need to present the following documentation at the end of their junior year: |
|Students will have to pass a drug test and background check in their junior year in order to participate in Nursing |
|Fundamentals. |
|Each student will need to present their signed Social Security Card for the above test to be performed. Students without a |
|government Social Security Card are not candidates for this course. |
|The following immunizations must be submitted in June of their junior year: Three Hepatitis B, Two Varicella (chicken Pox), |
|Two Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR), Polio/DPT, and an updated Tetanus immunization. |
|Copy (front and back) of their current CPR card for the Professional Health Care Provider (Adult, child, infant CPR, & AED). |
|The CPR card must be current through the senior year. |
|Upon entering the Nursing Fundamentals course in August of their senior year the students will also need the following: |
|Two PPD’s (Tuberculosis Test). Please get these during the summer before senior year. |
|Current influenza vaccination, when they become available during senior year. |
|Student costs/Materials to be supplied by students |
|Students are encouraged to join HOSA, the Health Occupations Students of America. There is a $20.00 fee to join. |
|Students must buy their uniform, white shoes, a watch with a second hand, and emblems. |
|Students are responsible for transportation to and from the clinical site. |

|Maximum Enrollment – 10 students |
|Enrollment is limited per North Carolina Board of Nursing (BON) Administrative Rule 21 NCAC 36.0318 (i) which requires the |
|ratio of teacher to nurse aide students be 1:10 or less while in the classroom and clinical areas. |
