Susan George, Pedro Paez, Alessandro Profumo and representatives from European institutions are among the main guests of Otranto Legality Experience (OLE), an event taking place in Lecce and Otranto, Italy, focused on analysing the links between transnational organised crime, finance and globalisation. Workshops, seminars and discussions will be held by Italian and international speakers from September 5th to 11th.

What are the links between organised crime and globalisation? And how should international institutions respond to contrasting phenomenon such as money laundering and corruption?

These are just a few of the questions that will be discussed during OLE - Otranto Legality Experience - the international event organised by FLARE, a network of civil society organisations committed to social struggle against organised crime. The first edition, in 2010, was attended by 200 participants and more than 60 international panelists.

Taking place in Lecce and Otranto, Apulia, from September 5th to 11th, OLE 2011 will be composed of two main parts: the Summer Camp (September 5th-8th) and the Forum (September 9th-11th). The Summer Camp is open to 200 participants. The aim is to examine and to identify what and how large the grey areas are in the workings of finance and economics and to suggest possible legal actions that can be taken against the people involved.

During the camp three main themes will be examined:

• Strategies to fight organised crime taken by the European Union and international bodies;

• Legality and illegality in social, economic and financial relations between the European Union and North Africa with a focus on immigration and trafficking in human beings;

• Energy and the relationship between mafia, transnational corporations and states in the renewable energy sector.

The summer camp will be followed by a public forum open to all with meetings, debates, cultural events on issues of globalisation, social justice and finance. The title of the event is Illegal Economy, Mafias and Financial Globalisation, aimed at civil society, public administration and all stakeholders.
