7 Principles of the Constitution

These principles (D: rule or standard) were built into the Constitution for the purpose of limiting the power of the national government.

Activity: Find support for each principle in the Constitution (pg 233-254) and then label & sketch/illustrate each principle:

| PRINCIPLE |SUPPORT FROM CONSTITUTION (Article, Section, Amendments) |

|Popular Sovereignty – popular referring to the people, | |

|sovereignty referring to supreme power; government is | |

|subject to the will of the people. | |

|Republicanism – People elect their political representatives| |

|Limited government – The Constitution limits the actions of | |

|government by specifically listing the powers the government| |

|has and doesn’t have (enumerated powers). | |

|Federalism – Power is divided & shared between national and | |

|state governments | |

|(delegated, reserved, concurrent) | |

|Separation of Powers – Each of the three branches of | |

|government has its own responsibilities. | |

|Checks and Balances - Each branch of government holds some | |

|control over the other two branches so each "checks" (or | |

|limits) the power of the others. | |

|Individual Rights - Basic liberties & rights of all citizens| |

|are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. | |
