Punctuating Titles

- When punctuating titles, all important words begin with a capital letter.

o Do not capitalize articles or prepositions unless they are the first word in the title.

o Examples:

▪ The Catcher in the Rye

▪ “The Road Less Traveled”

▪ Night

- When you are referring to a work, short works get quotation marks.

o Includes poems, individual TV episodes, songs, articles, etc.

o Examples:

▪ My favorite poem is “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes.

▪ I love to sing “Happy Birthday” to students.

- When you are referring to a work, lengthy works get underlined when handwriting, italicized when typing.

o Includes novels, magazine names, newspaper names, album titles, movies, plays, websites, etc.

o Examples:

▪ This article is from .

▪ We are all reading The Tao of Pooh right now.

* On the back of this sheet, write five sentences, each with a title that is correctly punctuated. Use short and long works!*
