LESSON PLAN ROWAN UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND EXERCISE SCIENCEHEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATIONTeacher: ?Angelina Bongiovanni, Rebecca Crowell, Brittany Yachere???Unit Title; Lesson Title: Identifying Unhealthy RelationshipsDuration of class:35 minutes Number of students: 20?? Grade level: 9th gradeSECTION A. (Overview) Rationale : For teens to develop positive, healthy relationships they need to be able to identify when relationships are unhealthy and damaging. Problems may begin with what seem to be “innocent” issues and can eventually lead to abuse and violence. Many teens settle for unhealthy relationships and find it difficult to communicate their concerns to their partners. This lesson encourages students to identify some of the signs of an unhealthy relationship, communication skills to help deal with the problems, and when necessary, strategies for ending relationships.Anticipated difficulties and how they will be addressed: Students may feel uncomfortable talking about the topic therefore the participation may slack. Students will be placed into groups of 3 or 4 so they can collaborate ideas before presenting them to the class.Resources, Equipment and Materials: Statement cardsBlackboard/Whiteboard New Jersey Core StandardsSECTION B. (Objectives, CPIs & Assessment) CPI - 2.4.6.A.2: Analyze the characteristics of healthy friendships and other relationshipsLesson Objective (CPI)Student AssessmentPsychomotor: Cognitive: Students will be able to identify healthy and unhealthy characteristics of a dating relationship.Teacher Observation. (Learning Activities & Instructional Strategies*) TimeLine:5 minutesIntroduction - the activity will be introduced by stating that sometimes it is necessary to step back and evaluate our romantic relationships. Often we cannot see the unhealthy trends when we are in the relationship. Before further instructions the students will be separated into groups of 3 or 4 for the activity.20minutesThe board will be separated into two columns, one headed healthy and the other headed unhealthy. Two relationship statement cards will be giving to each group. Students will be asked to discuss with their group if the statement is a healthy or unhealthy characteristic of a relationship. Students will then place their cards under the HEALTHY and UNHEALTHY column on the board. (Cognitive activity) Unhealthy Statements-Put one person before the other by neglecting yourself or your partner -Feel pressure to change who you are for the other person -Feel worried when you disagree with the other person -Feel pressure to quit activities you usually/used to enjoy-Pressure the other person into agreeing with you or changing to suit you better-Notice one of you has to justify your actions (e.g. where you go, who you see)-Notice one partner feels obligated to have sex or has been forced -Have a lack of privacy, and may be forced to share everything with the other person-Experience yelling or physical violence during an argument -Attempt to control or manipulate each other Healthy Statements-Take care of yourself and have good self-esteem independent of your relationship -Maintain and respect each other's individuality-Maintain relationships with friends and family -Have activities apart from one another-Are able to express yourselves to one another without fear of consequences -Are able to feel secure and comfortable -Allow and encourage other relationships -Take interest in one another’s activities-Do not worry about violence in the relationship-Accept influence. Relationships are give and take; allowing your partner to influence you is important; this can be especially difficult for some men. After the groups place their cards on the board they will get a chance to give an explanation as to why their group decided to place their cards in the healthy or unhealthy column.10 minutesStudents will return to their seats to have a group discussion to close the lesson. The following three questions will lead the conversation. (Affective activity)1. Why is it sometimes difficult for someone to acknowledge that they are in an unhealthy relationship? The expression “love is blind” is often true. Someone may feel they are so in love that they do not look deeply at the problems and stay in the relationship for the reasons below. 2. Why do people stay in unhealthy relationships? People who are in unhealthy relationships often believe things will get better, the problems are just a phase or that they can change their partner. Sometimes they will have seen this type of behavior in another relationship, for example at home and not realize that the characteristics are unhealthy. Teens may feel that having a boy/girl friend is more important than getting out of an unhealthy relationship. They may be scared to break it off either because they feel they cannot cope without the other person or the other person may be abusive or violent towards them. 3. If someone is in an unhealthy relationship what can s/he do about it?It is important to acknowledge unhealthy characteristics in a relationship before they become abusive characteristics. Emotional abuse such as verbal attacks may eventually turn into physical or sexual abuse. ................
