Course Description: Building Maintenance is designed to introduce students to the custodial, cleaning, and

Building maintenance service industry. We provide students with motivating learning activities to increase their

interest and understanding in the custodial field, and acquaint students with career opportunities in the building maintenance industry. We prepare them for entry- level positions through training experiences with our school-to work program in combination with classroom instruction.

CTSO/SKILLSUSA: SkillsUSA Georgia is the Career and Technical Student Organization for students enrolled in this program. All students have an opportunity to participate in various activities and leadership opportunities.

Curriculum Overview:

|Unit – VOCATION: Building Maintenance: hands-on training in all aspects of custodial cleaning to include basic |

|cleaning, floor care, safety, and exposure to training in the industry. |

|Unit – WORKPLACE MATH: instruction in basic math skills, time, scheduling, payroll, budgeting, consumer |

|math, and taxes. |

|Unit – SOCIAL SKILLS/CHARACTER TRAITS: instruction in personal skill traits to include responsibility, |

|sociability, self-management, and integrity. Life skills, to include instruction in the areas of creative |

|thinking, decision making, problem solving, and reasoning. |

|Unit- Health/Safety: instruction in health and safety precautions for home, school, and work. |

|Unit- Career Development: instruction includes work –based learning experiences, resumes, work ethics, job |

GRADING SYSTEM: The DeKalb County School District believes that the most important assessment of student learning shall be conducted by the teachers as they observe and evaluate students in the context of ongoing classroom instruction. A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

Notes:

*English Learners (ELs) must not receive numerical or letter grades for the core content areas in elementary and middle school during their first year of language development. A grade of CS or CU must be assigned. This rule may be extended beyond the first year with approval from the EL Studies Program. English Learners must receive a grade for ESOL courses.

~Elementary schools will utilize P (pass) and F (fail) in Health/Physical Education, Music, World Languages, Visual Arts and Performing Arts.

|DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS |

|STUDENT PROGRESS |Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester. |

| |The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as |

| |they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See|

|ACADEMIC INTEGRITY |Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false|

| |information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password.|

|HOMEWORK |Homework assignments should be completed the same night given, and returned the next day to the teacher unless |

| |otherwise specified by the teacher. Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience and |

| |is meant as review and practice of skills learned in class. |

|MAKE-UP WORK |When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently |

|DUE TO ABSENCES |beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days |

| |absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. |

| |Maintenance classroom. |

| |Class Rules |

| |1. After breakfast, students will go directly to class and sign in. |

| |2. Respect all staff, peers, and yourself at all times. |

| |3. Maintain appropriate noise levels and appropriate conversations at |

| |all times. |

| |4. Call in to school if you will be late or absent and speak to the |

| |teacher or leave message with call back number. |

| |5. Maintain proper attire at all times. |

| |6. Must wear belts, and pants must be worn at waistline. |

| |7. No excessive jewelry (no dangling earrings, no earrings on men, |

| |no gold teeth). |

| |8. Proper shoes |

| |9. No short skirts or revealing attire. |

| |10. Sleeping or vulgar language is unacceptable. |

| |11. Absolutely no horseplay. |

| |12. Students must maintain a positive attitude toward other students |

| |and staff! |

|MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES |Building Maintenance uniforms will be at a cost of $20 per student. Students are to wear their own black pants, |

| |belt, and black tennis or work shoes. |

|EXTRA HELP |Because we offer small group differentiated instruction, and have Para Educators in every classroom, students have|

| |access to one-on one extra help if needed. |

|PARENTS AS PARTNERS |Parents are always welcome to observe in the Building Maintenance classroom, pending notice given to the teachers,|

| |as we do attend off-site training three days a week. We encourage parental participation and will welcome your |

| |attendance. |
