MINUTESGW HSA MEETINGWednesday, September 18, 2013GWMS Media CenterPRESENT: Beth Clay, Allison Rogers, Becky Surwilo, Helen Dolan, Stacy Hughes, Susan Harrison, Grace Ylong, Janice Mazzo, Annette Testa, Debbie Engle, Deanna Hoffman, Ajanta Kumar, Joan Gaidimas, Rikki Lowy, Debbie Driscoll, Ann Ludwigsen, Beth Hayes-Stevens, Laura Miller, Tricia Mueller, Heather Lauricella.CALL TO ORDER: The President called the meeting to order at 1:00pm.President Beth Clay introduced the new HSA Board.APPROVAL OF MINUTES: A motion to approve the minutes was made by Beth Clay; motion approved by Janice Mazzo, seconded by Annette Testa and approved by all present.APPROVAL OF WHISTLEBLOWER POLICY: A motion was made to approve the Whistleblower Policy by Beth Clay; motion assume approved by all present.PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: Dr. KashmanianDr. Kashmanian welcomed everyone to a new year and to Middle School.Back to School Night is tonight, September 18th at 7:30pm.GW piloted a new Teacher Evaluation System last year. It is a complicated system that includes changes in tenure rules and teachers evaluations. Teachers are largely evaluated on student test scores. A new crisis management system called “Share with 911” has been implemented. Dr. K has an app on her phone that will alert all staff, via their phones, of fire and containment drills and emergencies.In an effort to make sure students are safe, GW has implemented an automated late or absent call system like RHS. If a child is not at school by 9am, attempts to reach the child’s parents via phone will begin by 9:15. The Ridgewood Police Department is eventually called if no parent can be reached. Please make sure to call the GW office if your child will be late or absent. As per the district, all students are required to register on Skyward. If they are not registered, they will not have access to computers at school. Between 30 and 40 GW families still have not registered.Dr. K apologized about the confusion regarding the Late Professional Development Days. The program was piloted last year at the high school and was a success but WILL NOT be implemented at the middle schools this year. Dr. K thanked all the parents for their support, fundraising efforts and work on the new TV Studio.There was been a discussion to change the 8th grade trip from DC to Boston this year. Dr. K will survey the 8th grade parents at Back to School Night to get their feedback.Though not for this year, Dr. K is exploring the possibility of an international trip for 8th grade language students.Dr. K was approached by a Jewish parent who suggested that children not be allowed to wear their Bar/Bat Mitzvah ‘favor’ (t-shirt, sweatshirts, etc.) the Monday following the event. Woodcliff Lake has implemented this program. The kids are allowed to wear their favor any other day but Monday. Dr. K will contact the Woodcliff Lake principal and look into the feasibility.PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Beth ClayThank you to members of the Board and to all volunteers for their help thus far this year. In particular; -Mariel Tsiskakis and her 7th grade volunteers for handling school supply distribution.-Allison Rogers, Jennifer Mullen and their 7th grade daughters for helping assemble the Federated first day of school envelopes. -Allison Rogers, Jennifer Mullen, Nicole Tedesco, Becky Surwilo, Helen Dolan and a group of 7th grade volunteers and friends for assembling and distributing GW HSA envelopes.-Mary Tagliabue, Ellen McNamara and their volunteers for organizing the Teacher/Staff breakfast held on September 4th.September 12, 2013 Federated Meeting Highlights:-Village Fresh (aka Pomplonian) presented new line in Elementary Schools. They have a new website, menu, packaging, and payment system. Orders can be taken until 8am the morning of and no need to order for an entire month. Payment can be made with credit card directly and there is no processing fee. Village Fresh will be offered at Middle and High Schools but they are looking into a pre-order system like elementary schools.-Dan Fishbein announced many new people at BOE including; Business Administrator/Board Secretary Michael Falkowski and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Cheryl Best. Enrollment down slightly overall in the district by 45 students, however GW is up 15 students from last year with a total of 668.BOE is holding Outreach workshops: 10/2 at BF is a K-12 Emotional Parenting Workshop and 10/24 at BOE is K-5 Social Studies Program.One Hour Delay will roll out to Middle and Elementary Schools next year so transportation and daycare logistics can be worked out. Last year it was a great opportunity for HS faculty to get professional development.District calendar for 2014-15 will be printed when they receive testing dates from the State. Surveys will be sent out to all parents about vacations for next year since some seniors had to miss graduation due to the late date in June.Other Federated News-Recreation Center hosting Middle School events:9/27 7:30-9:30pm 6th grade mixer10/4 7:30-9:30pm 7/8th grade mixer4/4 7:30-930pm 6th grade party5/11 7:30-9:30pm 7/8th grade party5/30 5th grade mixer: 5-7pm BF, 7-9pm GW-October 9th HSA Presidents will ride fire trucks with the Ridgewood Fire Department and observe all district fire drills.-TD Bank offering Federated the Infinity Program. Last year, TD Bank gave Federated a check for $10,951.-Harlem Wizards game scheduled for Friday, January 31, 2014.-Safety Meeting at BOE on October 23rd from 9-11:00am. Jeanne Johnson volunteered for the GW Safety Chair position.-Insurance is necessary for all off campus activities.-Directory data is expected to be sent on September 18th from Skyward. If anyone has a change of address, legal documents showing change must be presented to school secretary.-If parents have not updated their Skyward information, their children will not have access to computers at school.-The Learning Services HSA is hosting The Sheriff’s Gold Star ID Program on October 10th from 3-5pm. It is a free program where a child’s photo ID will be made and kept on the County computer system. You will need to provide your child’s social security number and blood type.VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Allison RogersDeadline for ordering directories is today, September 18th. Money was raised from these fundraisers: Friends of GW Letter, Auction, Election Day Plant Sale, Ladies Night Out and Locker Shelves.GWHSA raised $25,177.25 for the new TV Studio ($11,517.25 from the May Parent Social and $13,660 that was returned to GW from BOE for overpayment for chaperones.) After the purchase of products, equipment, installation, construction and training a balance of $1,751.20 remains and there is more equipment needed to complete the studio. GW HSA is applying for a REF Grant to seek these funds.Girls Leadership Institute, which is a series of empowerment workshop for 7th and 8th grade girls and their caregivers, will be held at GWMS Tuesdays from 7-9pm on February 25, March 4, 11, 18, 2014. Fall programs are offered at BFMS, Ridge, Sommerville and Travell. For information and sign up go to the website .The Plant Sale with Goffle Brook Farms is on May 2, 2014.The Locker Shelf (which replaced the Locker Ladder) pilot made $1,420 and was a successful program. Extras should be ordered next year so they can be sold at Back to School Night.The Friends of GW Letter made $13,611. Monies will help fund 6th grade campout and 8th grade DC Trip. FOGW Letter will be sent earlier this year (possibly November).The GW Parent Social will be held on October 18th at the home of Karen and Larry Grassi. COMMITTEE REPORTS:Grocery Gift Card: Debbie DriscollThe program is a fundraiser that doesn’t cost GW any money. A&P, Kings, Stop & Shop and Shoprite give 5% back to GW from cards purchased. Debbie will be at school events (Back to School Night, Plant Sale, etc.) to promote the program and sell gift cards.GW Wear: Debbie EngelOrders to date and camping trip sales total 91 orders and $4,426. Camping trip sales were $290 which was disappointing. Debbie wants to sell $2,500 at Back to School Night to reach goal from last year and there is good inventory to do this. Fastest sellers are the navy/gold pant and the ‘cool dry’ shirts. She will push the sweatshirt stadium blanket, pink flannel pants and neon pink tee shirt at Back to School night.6th Grade Photo Book: 75% of the 6th grade class has placed orders and they will be handed out at Back to School Night. There will also be extra photo books for munity Service:The 7th grade Community Service Fair is scheduled for October 4th.Birthday Book Program: Rikki LowyRikki reported that she has 163 orders totaling $3,260 so far and the deadline for orders is October 4th.
