Valid driver's license.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenanceAbility to determine causes of operating errors and decide what to do about itKnowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goodsEssential FunctionsKey Responsibilities60% of Time the Mechanic, General Repair must:Test drives and/or inspects vehicles and equipment for wear, damage or specific problems that might affect performance; checks lighting and charging systems for proper operation, and repairs as necessary; performs engine tune-ups, including diagnosing items needing repair or replacement and adjusts or replaces items as necessary; services vehicles and other motorized equipment; removes and replaces filters and batteries; checks and recharges air conditioning systems; adjusts and repairs brakes, clutches, steering components, shocks, and struts; removes and installs alternators, generators, starters, water and fuel pumps, carburetors, steering mechanisms, mufflers and clamps; steam cleans and washes vehicles; uses tools associated with the mechanic trade; cleans and maintains shop, tools, and equipment; prepares records and reports; may assist journey mechanics by: setting-up equipment and assembling tools for major engine, transmission, and powertrain repairs; assisting in alignment; body, frame, and fender repair; hydraulic repair; and windshield and glass installation; maintains pool car fleet; inspects and verifies that vehicles meet bid specifications; may conduct small engine repair; operates vehicles to evaluate work required and/or performed.35% of Time the Mechanic, General RepairDetermined by department needs5% of Time the Mechanic, General RepairPerform other duties as assignedWork Environment and Physical DemandsIncumbents work with flammable and toxic materials. Work may be in a motor pool service shop or in a large repair shop under the direction of a journey mechanic or shop supervisor. Incumbents learn to use specialized tools and testing equipment, and to maintain and repair major components of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, drive trains and related component systems. Incumbents may be required to work overtime, with overnight travel to repair field equipment.
