Fall of Rome

By 369 A.D it was obvious that the Roman Empire was facing many problems. These problems eventually caused the empire to collapse. By about 500 A.D the Empire had fallen apart. A cause is a reason why something happens. A consequence is something that happens because of something else.

Problem The Emperors of Rome were greedy.

Why is it bad? What does it mean?

Taxes were increased. For some people one-third of their wages went towards taxes.

Tribes outside the empire attacked its borders.

Powerful generals kept fighting among themselves about who should be the next emperor.

Soldiers wanted more pay.

The borders were costing more and more to defend.

In 73 years there were 23 emperors. 20 of these were murdered.

Poor people were driven to crime.

The empire needed a strong army to protect its borders.

The defenses of the empire were strong on the edges, but weak in the middle.

Once tribes broke through the defenses, it was easy to keep going.

Many Roman citizens began to rebel against their rulers.
