TV lights up the night (and day) on the Fourth of July

By Jay Bobbin Television never misses the chance to help America celebrate its independence, and so it is again this year. As usual, holiday specials, movies and series marathons will mark the occasion Thursday, July 4 -- including two traditional offerings guaranteed to be enough to set off fireworks, literally. NBC will televise its Macy's 4th of

PBS airs its traditional Independence Day concert special "A Capitol Fourth" Thursday (check local listings).

July Fireworks Spectacular, with music accompanying the visuals, some of it provided by performers on site in New York. Among scheduled participants are Luke Bryan, Maren Morris and Brad Paisley.

PBS will present the annual, largely musical showcase "A Capitol Fourth" (check local listings), with John Stamos in his third consecutive year as host. Based in Washington, D.C., the show will spotlight veteran singer-songwriter Carole King -- performing herself, and joined by the Broadway cast of the stage hit inspired by her life and songs, "Beautiful" (which has just welcomed Vanessa Carlton as King). Colbie Caillat, Vanessa Williams and Yolanda Adams also are on the bill.

On the July 4th film front, Turner Classic Movies also maintains tradition with two appropriate features typically shown there on that date. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" celebrates George M. Cohan, the showman "born on the Fourth of July," with James Cagney in an Oscar-winning performance. Then, "1776" brings to film the stage musical about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with much of the original Broadway cast.

U.S. president fighting hijackers aboard "Air Force One," and also presents the Civil War drama "Glory," featuring Denzel Washington in the performance that earned him his first Academy Award.

Tom Cruise soars among "the best of the best" as Paramount Network presents "Top Gun" -- and this is a good time to catch up with it, since the actor will reprise the role of pilot Maverick in a sequel slated for release next summer.

As for another all-American hero, Rocky Balboa goes several rounds on EPIX, which shows Sylvester Stallone's first five "Rocky" movies in order. Outof-this-world heroes also have their day on the Fourth, with TNT exhibiting several of the "Star Wars" adventures that followed the original trilogy. And TNT gives the holiday over to heroes of the Marvel kind with a movie marathon that includes "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Captain America: The First Avenger" and "X-Men: Apocalypse."

And July 4th series marathons run from K to Z ("Keeping Up With the Kardashians" on E! Entertainment Television, and zombies on "The Walking Dead" on AMC), with "Law & Order" (Sundance), "Two and a Half Men" (IFC), "Gilmore Girls" (UP) and "Last Man Standing" (WGN America) also in the mix.

Wherever your patriotic tastes run this Fourth of July, then, TV should have you well-covered.

Lottery Announced for Senior Boat Trip

Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the County of Hudson will sponsor a boat trip for senior citizens on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, courtesy of Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise, Freeholder Kenneth Kopacz of Bayonne, and the other members of the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Limited numbers of tickets are available for the excursion in each Hudson County municipality.

The Bayonne Division of Recreation will hold a lottery to distribute tickets to Bayonne senior residents for the event.

Any Bayonne senior citizen, age 60 or over, interested in entering the lottery for the excursion may do so on the following weekdays, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., at the Bayonne Recreation Division at City Hall, Room 13: Monday, July 8; Tuesday, July 9; Wednesday, July 10; Thursday, July 11; and Friday, July 12.

The rules allow only one entry per household. Proof of age and Bayonne residency must be presented at the time of lottery registration. There will be a lottery drawing at the Recreation Division at City Hall, on Wednesday, July 17. Winners will be notified by telephone. Each of the winners will receive two tickets. Everyone using a ticket must be at least 60 years old and a resident of Bayonne. The Recreation Division asks anyone with a ticket who is unable to participate in the cruise to call 201-858-6127, so

that someone else would be able to go instead. The Recreation Division will maintain a waiting list from the lottery.

Buses will be provided to transport excursion participants to the dock at Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken. The buses will leave from the parking lot of Ahern Veterans Memorial Stadium, which is located at Newark Bay, between 25th Street and 27th Street. The stadium stands behind the southern rear corner of Bayonne High School. Parking will be available in and around the stadium parking lot. The buses will leave that parking lot for Weehawken at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24. Once the passengers get to Weehawken, the walk from the non-air-conditioned buses to the boat will take 15 to 30 minutes.

The cruise will last approximately two hours after it departs from Weehawken. Buses will transport seniors back to Bayonne after the cruise. The seniors should be back in Bayonne by 3:15 p.m. Passengers are not allowed to bring food or beverages with them. Food, drinks, and musical entertainment will be provided on board the boat. Just like an athlete before a big competition,

Casey Webb of "Man v. Food" does his prep

While on the road, the host of the Cooking

Channel series makes sure he eats well, gets

plenty of rest and tries to get in his exercise. And

if he happens to be taking on a

challenge that entails downing

uberhot peppers, well, guess

what gets added to his training

regimen.

"I have an arsenal of dried

chilis in my apartment as we

speak ...," he explains, "So it's

really about prepping your sys-

tem. I travel with ghost chilis

and I incorporate it into my diet

just so it's in my body so it's not

a shock to my system. But it

doesn't change how it affects

your palate. It's going to burn. You know, it's hot (but) these are

little things that help."

The new season gets going Tuesday, July 2, and

finds Webb traveling to locations across the

country to check out the fare in places such as

Wisconsin, Ohio, Alaska and Texas and take on

epic challenges such as a 30-pound bagel sand-

wich, outsized portions of barbecue and a plate

of ghost chili pepper tacos.

In the season opener, he goes to Sacramento,

Calif., where he drops in on a family-run Chi-

"They do it in a French style," Webb notes, "so

it's more like bread than it is an actual waffle as

we know it in America, so it really holds up well

so they can make these really hearty sand-

wiches."

pretty hot."

"You know, it's like an oil fire," Webb says.

"You don't want to throw water on an oil fire, it

just spreads it out. ... I've taken to drink iced tea

because it helps very little but it's somehow sat-

isfying and it's a little better than water. I mean,

it's 95 percent water but that little bit of tea cuts

the heat just for a hot second. When you're get-

ting into increasingly hot stuff like 1.5, two mil-

lion Scoville units ... any little bit helps."

discussed at length by Savage, its "stars" and special guests on "What Just Happened??! With Fred Savage," which Fox premieres Sunday, June 30. Think of what "Talking Dead" does in relation to "The Walking Dead," and you'll recognize the intention as "The Wonder Years" alum Savage (who's also a top sitcom director now, and also a creator and executive producer of his new show) and others emulate such programs.

"The Flare" always ends in a moment of suspense or drama or excitement," Savage explains, "and our show is called `What Just Happened??!' because `The Flare' leaves us just pulling our hair out because it's so incredible. We're not poking fun at anything or satirizing anything; we're really embracing the idea of fandom and that thing that each one of us is incredibly passionate about.

"And we're doing it positively," notes Savage. "I feel like now, in particular, is an interesting time to be a fan of something. There always seems to be some negative angle where you start to hate that thing you're a fan of, and this is really a celebration of that side of fandom that is just joy and enthusiasm and support."

Appleby ("UnREAL"), Kevin Zegers ("Dirty John"), Amy Acker and Tyler Ritter. Also appearing on the "What Just Happened??!" premiere is Rob Lowe, who starred with Savage in the Fox show "The Grinder" (and returns next season in the new "9-1-1: Lone Star").

"There is this fervent desire by fans of a show to discuss it in a public forum," Savage says, "and even though you would think Twitter has become that forum, all these culturally significant dramas -- like `The Walking Dead' and `Breaking Bad' and `Stranger Things' -- have had these aftershows. We have some DNA from those (in `What Just Happened??!'), but then, we're also taking a lot of elements from late-night talk shows. We have a co-host (comedian Taylor Tomlinson), a band (Best Coast) and genuine guests who come on to do real interviews. It's a bit of a blend."

As his stint as host of the ABC game show "Child Support" also suggested, Savage enjoys appearing as himself now, in addition to playing someone else. "It's stretching me in new and sometimes terrifying ways," he muses, "and for me personally, it's terribly exciting in that respect."
