One is the Academic Plan, which will guide Clark’s programs and student services over the next five years. The first goal of the plan is to implement Guided Pathways, the second large initiative. All Washington State community colleges will implement Guided Pathways. This is aligning schedules and building program pathways that have clearer more defined structures, saving students time and money getting to graduation. Training for advisory members on Guided Pathways will be on March 24.Specific transformations that advisory members will see this year include a redesign of the meeting agenda format. This provides faculty and committees with a connection to the academic plan and will streamline the meeting while including committee work plan activities. The committee composition will now include students and Clark Alumnae. Students will be able to earn a small stipend and a letter of recommendation for their attendance and participation. Piloted this year, we hope that students will be a regular and vital presence on every committee in the future. Transforming the role of committee members, from just meeting attendees to being a part of our learning community. Not just trainings, the series of Business and Community Learning events on campus are set up to be quick and friendly ‘lunch and learn’ opportunities. FREE and open to the public, the workshops will be scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and held in the Gaiser Student Center, allowing people to attend on their lunch hour. Food is available in the carts on campus, and guests are welcome to bring their brown bag. Additional information to follow in emails.Friday December 9thAdvocacy Friday February 24th Millennials in the Workforce Friday March 24th PathwaysFriday May 19th The Power of Completion An evening event will be planned in the Spring to thank our advisory committee members for their time and expertise. Look for information during winter term.A complete computer systems upgrade to campus registration, human resources and finance systems. The ‘go-live’ date for will be January 30. It will not impact the advisory committees, but it will impact campus business so there will be a moratorium on advisory meetings from mid-January to mid-February.The new Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Management (BASAM) is accepting students beginning winter term 2017. For additional information go to: ReportBrian shared with the committee that he is pleased to report that the 14 students that started the program are still enrolled, illustrating that retention efforts are working. In addition, he noted that there is a mixed age group. All students have successfully passed electrical units 1 and 2, and Brian outlined that he had implemented some active learning strategies to ensure knowledge remains current. The self-study rate is currently at 40%, and one student has in fact completed all the self-study and passed the ASEs. Brian indicated he was pleased to be challenged by a more advanced student. There are 6 students currently placed at various dealerships. In terms of study vehicles, Brian shared that the training center has donated a 1987 Accord for tearing down. In addition, a Dick Hannah customer donated an ’06 Insight as well as money for the repair processes. Department UpdatesMike outlined that a new instructor has been found following a previous resignation. Andrew Marks will be joining the Department as a former Honda Master Technician. He will begin observation of classes with a formal start date in January. As the PACT students are not in the classroom for the Winter term, there will be time devoted to curriculum development etc. In terms of an equipment update, Mike indicated that 10 electrical trainers and additional fluke meters have been purchased, and he will work with Brian and Jordan on tool evaluation. Both Mike and Brian are on course to complete their remaining few training modules. Mike took the opportunity to thank the Training Center for being flexible as they juggled additional instruction demands. Mike indicated that the College is fully supportive of the department models; PACT is perfectly positioned for the pathways initiative as it provides structured education. This is combined with Michaela’s efforts to ensure retention and completion. Jason then spoke to the need to align the program with the career that follows. He emphasized the importance of the role of the mentor as a guide and amabassador to the career. Jason continued that there would be a benefit to getting students working full time in the dealerships as early as possible. It is key that students have exposure to customer service as well as maintenance procedures. In response to a question from Jaleen as to the capacity of the program, Jason shared with the committee that each program can have approximately 20 students. It is hoped that most of them will have the ability to follow a ‘straight line’ through the program and into a technician role. The Program is designed with to begin every summer; however, the committee discussed the benefits to a more ‘rolling start’ format as the internships become established. Recruitment UpdateMichaela shared that she, along with Ryan and Emre, visited all of the stores in late June: Mike Gerstler had talked about identifying potential students from existing employees. As such, Michaela outlined that she had sat down with approximately 12 identified employees who were identified: 1 from Dick’s Hillsboro Honda subsequently became a student in the program. In discussing program structure, the persistent challenge is the 3-month classroom-based slot that means no wages. For some, that is just not a feasible option.Action item: Michaela indicated that she will share the Honda-specific recruitment plan she has devised with the committee. In a response to a question from Gary, Michaela indicated that there are 2 students lined up for 2017, but attrition remains an issue. She reiterated to the committee that she recognizes the need from the stores for students. There is a constant emphasis on finding good students to undertake the program: they are then given the opportunity to job shadow so that they can observe the environment and ensure they understand the role.Teresa continued that she is keen for Honda to assist in helping with the efforts against attrition from the front end. Communication is a key part of this; not only with the students, but with their parents as well. She took a moment to recognize Michaela and the Clark team’s efforts in establishing the program. Teresa encouraged the committee members present to connect with Michaela. Feasibility of Electrical ClassMike spoke of a conversation at the previous Advisory Committee meeting where Monte had mentioned that the most persistent challenge for students is the electrical components, and asked Clark College to investigate the feasibility of offering a class. Mike outlined that, based on a Saturday schedule the baseline cost would be about $40k. Issues with that would be convincing employees to attend on a Saturday.Jaleen continued that another option could be to offer a one-day course through the training center; especially in view of the broad geography of this Honda Zone.Other BusinessBruce asked if students were given interview preparedness advice: Michaela responded that their current job shadow packet requires the creation of a resume and cover letter, but that she can add interview skills. Teresa added that it was important the Managers take the time to communicate with students and encourage questions to ensure they are prepared and the best fit for the business. The committee agreed that the addition of a mock interview process, most likely in conjunction with Clark College Careers services, would be beneficial. Brianna encouraged committee members to provide examples of questions that students would likely be asked.Action item: Michaela will report on adding a mock interview component to the introduction process to the committee at the next meetingBrian Moore then took the opportunity to thank the Zone Office for hosting the meeting, and the dealers in attendance. Dealer support is a crucial element of the PACT program; it cannot function and develop without dealer investment. Brian also indicated that a small team of 3 is responsible for managing the PACT program across 26 schools. There is a hope that the program will grow to cover more sites. In addition, a PACT Collision Repair program is being developed: there are currently unofficial agreements with schools in NC, St. Louis and southern CA. If they are successful there will be a drive to expand that element of the program.Brian thanked the College and Dealers for their outstanding support of the PACT initiative, and indicated that the management side will continue to work on developing the program.Election of Committee ChairFollowing the vacating of the office of Committee chair, Teresa volunteered to serve in the position. This was formally proposed by Emre, seconded and unanimously approved. The meeting was adjourned at 12.12Jaleen offered a tour of the facility for those interested.Prepared by Nichola Farron ................
