Concepts to remember: Look up the information below and fill in the blanks when necessary. (ON BACK)

1. Remember that waves in the ocean move energy through the water by moving water around in circles rather than up and down or forward. Waves are formed as result of wind blowing across the water, tides, and tectonic plate movement.

2. Remember that the deeper you go in the ocean, the colder the water temperature becomes. The water pressure also increases with depth.

3. Besides waves, water can be moved in the ocean because of currents. Remember that longshore currents carry water along the coast down one direction, not away from the beach like a rip current.

4. Be familiar with features of the ocean floor. Label the parts below:

5. What type of water is in the Earth’s oceans? _________________

6. What is a place where fresh water flows into the ocean? ________________________

7. Remember that erosion from waves and storms can cause beaches to become worn down and sand can be carried away. Beach restoration projects are used to replenish the amount of sand on the coast. If erosion is constantly happening and wearing down the beaches, are beach restoration projects a permanent solution? ___________________

8. Remember that seasons on Earth are caused by the tilt of the Earth on its axis at 23½° and Earth’s orbit around the sun allowing Earth to receive different amounts of direct sunlight throughout the year. During summer in the Northern hemisphere we are tilted toward the sun, receiving the most direct sun rays which causes us to heat up.

9. Remember that in our solar system, Earth is one of the 4 inner planets- also called Terrestrial Planets. Earth is made of rock, and is the only planet to have a suitable atmosphere for life and liquid water.

10. Remember that the moon in a natural satellite that orbits Earth every month. As it moves around Earth, part of the moon’s surface is lit up by the light of the sun allowing us to see only part of the moon each night. We call these nightly changes moon phases. Label the moon phases below:

11. Remember that as the Earth revolves around the sun, the moon is also revolving around the Earth. Sometimes the moon can pass in front of the sun, creating a shadow on Earth. Sometimes the Earth can pass in front of the sun during the Full moon phases- causing the moon to go dark. We call this an eclipse. Label the solar and lunar eclipses below:
