Course Syllabus

I. Course Overview

A- The course is conducted in Spanish. All students practice in the target language with teachers and peers.

B- Different oral listening styles are targeted so students can understand idiomatic differences

C- Listening Skills are used with tape recorder to make students more efficient in comprehension

D- Demonstrate competency in reading aloud from a variety of sources

E- Listen attentively to recognize major points of emphasis by identifying facts, details, sequence and other literal content

F- Write compositions in a variety of modes

G- Identify and use root words, possessive, plural, compound words, verb tense, and etymologies

H- Use critical listening and viewing strategies by comparing and contrasting versions of literature

I- Evaluate how literary elements of plot setting, characterization, point of view and theme contribute to meaning in literature.

II. Course Outline

A- Abriendo Paso: Gramatica

1- Provide students with thorough review of grammar practice. Everything is thoroughly covered in class. Students do oral activities in class, written, and homework.

B- Abriendo Paso: Lectura

1- Provides students with reading material for analysis and comprehension. Students read out loud in class. Stories are analyzed; tremendous interaction takes place in classroom. Exchange of ideas in the target language using analysis

C- AP Spanish Language Book

1- This book provides an opportunity for individuals to practice at home and in class, always reviewing material with the teacher. It is used as a complementary text in the advanced courses. It contains the dialogues, narratives, as well as directed responses.

D- Listening Comprehension

1- Because we do not have access to a language lab, students employ the use of tape recorders to practice listening comprehension skills as well as practice speaking skills.

III. Course Planner

A- First and Second Quarter

1- Abriendo Paso: Gramatica

1. El Pretérito- You will review and practice how to narrate in the past. You will be able to describe the past and talk about your life and events that occurred in the past

2. Los Adjetivos- In order to describe and compare things, people, ideas and actions, you will need to know how to use adjectives in Spanish. Also review the structures needed for making comparisons of equality and inequality

3. El Presente- Practice structure that will allow you to talk about yourself and others, and about activities in which you participate.

4. Imperativo- You will review and practice how to give someone a command and how to persuade and influence others to take a certain course of action.

a. Series of Dialogues and Narratives approximately of one or two minutes duration

a. Multiple choice vocabulary and structure questions that appear in these two units

3. Unit 5- Reading Comprehension

a. Reading the passage and then choosing the correct response

B- Third and Fourth Quarter

1- Abriendo Paso: Gramatica

1. La Narración- Las descripciones en el futuro- Review how to express your desires, plans, and ideas about the future as well as how to speculate about the present

2. El Pasado- You will also review how to describe hypothetical events, people, and things in the past, how to speculate about the past and how to talk about what you would do or what you would have done in various situations

3. Los Sustantivos- Classified masculine and feminine nouns that will end in –o are masculine and in –a are feminine, however there are exceptions and rules

4. Relative Pronouns- Relative Pronouns usually introduce a dependent clause that describes something or someone in a main clause. Relative pronouns help you avoid repetition

a. Consists of a series of passages when you read to supply the correct form of verb, pronoun, adjectives, article, etc.

4. Unit 10- Essay

a. Forty-five minutes to write an essay. First 5 minutes are intended to organize thoughts

5. Unit 11- Picture Sequences

a. You are asked to describe or tell a story using a series of drawings as your guide

6. Unit 12- Directed Response

a. Consists of six questions. Usually each question tries to elicit a particular tense.
