Peace & Joy

My philosophy is to spread Peace and Joy everywhere I go. I believe the world would be a much better place if we all just wished each other Peace and Joy. When students leave my class, I always send them out wishing them Peace and Joy. Hopefully this is the beginning of creating a better world.

Welcome to Middle School &

Meet Mrs. Baker

Welcome to Middle School Science Class at MACS. I hope that your summer has been restful and that you are ready to return with enthusiasm to learn.

Middle school is an important time of learning in life, and I am pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to that learning. I look forward to helping you grow in knowledge and skills in Science. As a Science teacher, I believe that a student’s mastery of content in Science is crucial to his/her future. Know that I will strive to provide you a firm foundation in this area.

This is my 8th year at Midland Academy and my second year in Middle School after moving from 3rd grade. I find Middle School more of a challenge not to mention the fun Science Experiments. I have lived in Midland for sixteen years with my husband, Doug. We have three sons, Nathan, Wyatt and Holdyn. Nathan is a postal employee, Wyatt will start his career as a pastor in September and Holdyn will be a junior at Midland High this year. Go Dawgs!

I have also attached the Science Expectations and Procedures Return Form. Please have your parents sign and return this form to school. This lets me know you have seen this and gone over this with your parents. I look forward a successful year in Science.

7th Grade Grading

Procedures

In 7th grade we use the STEMscopes curriculum. Most of our activities will be online. At the beginning of each unit we will, start in the Science Lab. You will be given an activity to work on in your group. This activity will be graded as a participation grade. Depending on the number of problems, you will be given a grade on the number of problems completed. Grades will be as follows: 100, 85, 70 or 60. After our lab activity, you will be given various assignments online to complete. These assignments will be averaged together for a Daily Assignment Grade. Along with these assignments, you will keep an Interactive Science Notebook, or ISN. I will grade these each nine weeks as a test grade. There will be a rubric to follow and will outline how the ISN will be graded. After each Reporting Category, you will have a test. We will discuss what Reporting Categories are in class. Lastly Nine Weeks Exams will be given at the end of each Nine Weeks.

8th Grade Grading Procedure

Like, in 7th grade we use the STEMscopes curriculum. Most of our activities are online. There will also be a quiz for each section, this will also be graded as Daily Assignment Grade. Along with these assignments, you will keep an Interactive Online Notebook, or ION. I will grade these each nine weeks as a test grade. There will be a rubric to follow and will outline how the ION will be graded. This will be created in Google Docs, shared with Mrs. Baker and you can work on it anywhere. After each Reporting Category, you will have a test. We will discuss what Reporting Categories are in class. In your Composition Notebook, you will create a STAAR Review throughout the year. You will use this as a study guide for

the 8th Grade Science STAAR. This

notebook will be graded as your

final Nine Weeks Exam. Other exams

will be given at the end of each Nine Weeks.

6th Grade Grading Procedure

In 6th Grade, you will work through a workbook consumable. For each chapter there are various activities that we will work on as a group. Once done with each chapter, I will check your work. Based on the number of activities you will receive a participation grade on the number of activities you completed. Grades will be entered in the Gradebook as a 100, 85, 70 or 60. At the end of each chapter, there will be a Review Sheet. 1st Semester you will work with a partner and 2nd Semester you will work individually. This paper will be graded as a daily grade. In addition to your consumable, you will also keep an Interactive Science Notebook or ISN. You will be given a grade each 9 weeks for your notebook as a test grade. A rubric will be given

to you. Lastly, after each Reporting Category there will be a test. More info on Reporting Categories later.

Capturing Kids Hearts

We are excited to continue the Capturing Kids Hearts program! This amazing program outlines a process we can use to help build meaningful connections with students. The goal is to capture kids’ hearts in order to capture their minds. Research shows that when students feel more connected to their school and staff, they achieve higher academic success and are less likely to have attendance, tardy, or behavioral issues. Students will learn how to take responsibility for their actions and performance while in school. Teachers will build better classroom rapport and encourage teamwork, while other staff will use this program to create a safe and trusting learning environment. This process increases students’ willingness to learn and it empowers them to take charge with their learning process. I am so excited to continue

working with the students to capture their hearts!
