PRESIDENT'S REPORT 2018-2019

PRESIDENT ALISON BACON

Firstly I begin with an acknowledgement to our club members for the amazing accomplishments made over the last year. The Annual Report details what the club have taken on and we have achieved on a massive scale if you look at the financial contributions, but also look at the humanitarian assistance we have contributed, that too has been just as important.

The Cobar Drought Relief Project has been the standout achievement, with support from District funds we achieved possibly the largest humanitarian project ever undertaken by our club. I congratulate all members on this successful undertaking.

Club members continued to commit to a great variety of community events, projects and programs. We did so with both enthusiasm and a belief that we were ‘Being the Inspiration’ and were rewarded by seeing our efforts greatly appreciated by those who were in need.

As a reflection on our year here is a little reminder from our calendar over the last 12 months. Imagine how long the list would have been had I included all the BBQs and catering events that we also provided as a part of our Community Service/Fundraising throughout the year.

I was honoured to have the opportunity to serve the club in a consecutive year of Presidency. An opportunity never afforded a president in the past, so indeed an honour from a club that has always valued its rich traditional history.

There has been a great deal of interest shown lately as to how I feel now that I am nearing the end of my Presidency. I have to say that I am as passionate now as what I was when I took on the role two years ago. Passionate about both our wonderful organisation known as Rotary International and about the great leadership we receive from District 9800. But, above all else, I am excited to see the momentum we have created within the club. We are attracting new members who are coming to the club from a vast array of vocations, all bringing with them a real interest in our community and a belief that our club is a great fit for achieving some really good things in not just our immediate area but looking beyond our famous ‘bridge’ to our fellow Australians and overseas opportunities.

5

For the last 12 months our members have worked hard as a team, have done an amazing job as Rotarians and it is great to be a part of such a wonderful group of likeminded people. Thank you to all our members for all that you have done. I do wish to especially thank the boards that I have worked with. These are the members who have given even more of their time, efforts and talents to ensuring the decisions made will always be in the best interest of the club. These members have gone above and beyond on many occasions to ensure we always ‘got it right’. They were brave enough to make the decisions that needed to be made and they were strong enough to support each other in great team work. I confidently pass on the Presidency to a great Rotarian in PP John Jones, a Rotarian who exemplifies the true meaning of being a Rotarian.

We belong to the best service organisation in the world and I look forward as I continue to play a role in the team that is the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk, working together to achieve not only ‘Being the Inspiration’ in our community but great things as ‘Rotary Connects the World’.

CLUB SERVICE COMMITTEE

CHAIR: ALISON BACON

The role of Club Service Director has been revised to now fall under the duties of the Incoming President with the exception of this year as John already had a dual role with the International Directorship so a different approach was taken. As an interim arrangement, Club Services was overseen by President Alison with all members of the Board available to undertake duties as needed.

This has worked well and has actually resulted in a more cohesive approach to all club related administrative tasks and has achieved many changes that will address the needs of the club into the future.

The many facets of the Club Service Role are often taken for granted but there are many members who contribute, sometimes in small ways, and at other times as a regular weekly commitment, bring them all together and the club continues to function very well from week to week.

The program for the year has seen less emphasis on a weekly speaker and a greater focus on the activities of the club, being a Rotarian and facilitating programs and projects.

PP John Jones and David Bugeja worked as a team with President Alison to bring together the weekly bulletin for the members to always have an up to date reminder of the happenings within the club.

August of 2018 saw a ‘tradition’ of Rotary, the Sergeant Session taken out of our weekly meeting program. For some, this was a disappointing loss of tradition, for others it

7

was an indication that our club was embracing the importance of inclusivity.

Pleasingly we have inducted five new members, welcoming Rotarians Robert Hansford, Seamus Haugh, Geoff Gallagher, Brian Fitzpatrick and Peter Holden. All new members have an interest in our local community and bring to the club a wealth of knowledge in their respective vocations. This increase in newer members is a great indication that our club is respected within the Eaglehawk community for what we have done and the potential for what we can do into the future.

We have accepted a couple of resignations, those being Jill Barker and Peter Taylor. Both members finding their work commitments far too great to enable continuing their membership, however Jill and Peter have indicated a continued commitment to assisting our club in whatever way they are able into the future. The club sadly lost one of our great supporters in the passing of Jack Taylor OAM. Jack was an honorary member and was a personal friend of many in the club.

The team that have undertaken the weekly role of cashier have continued to provide a great service for the club. The introduction of an EFTPOS facility was well received, and definitely more convenient for our ‘cashless’ members.

The Club’s Protection Officer, Doug Harrison, has continued to maintain the accuracy of the clubs records and we thank all members for your understanding the importance of this role.

Next year will see PE Mick Costello undertake the role of Club Services as a lead in to his year of Presidency.

Alison Bacon, Chair.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

DIRECTOR: ROD HANSON

We can be rightfully proud of our Club and its tradition of being a generous supporter of the Rotary Foundation. Since it was established over 100 years ago, the Foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing, sustainable projects around the world.

The mission of the Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.

The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation funded solely by voluntary contributions from members and friends of Rotary who support its mission. The Foundation transforms donations into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary, it focuses on priorities such as eradicating polio and promoting peace. The Foundation awarded US$86.7 million in funding to 1,306 grants during fiscal year 2018.

Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating and a unique funding model mean that a very high percentage of all contributions reach their target.

The Foundation directs its efforts into six areas to enhance local and global impact. The most successful and sustainable projects and activities tend to fall within the following areas:

Promoting peace; Fighting disease; Providing clean water; Saving mothers and children; Supporting education and Growing local economies.

9

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years, and has made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, polio cases have been reduced by more than 99.9 per cent. Rotary has contributed more than $1 billion and many thousands of hours to the eradication effort. Thanks to global vaccination, more than 2.5 billion children have been protected against polio since 1985. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donates $2 for every $1 contributed by Rotary to the program, which means that for every dollar we give, $3 is made available to eradicate polio.

Our Club’s contributions to and support from the Foundation this year include:

• The completion of construction of the fantastic $1.3M Eaglehawk Playspace Project in September for which the Club received a District Grant of $2500 (the maximum available) towards our Club’s very significant contribution of $20,000.

• In October, our Club meeting for World Polio Day was held at the Marong Family Hotel. During the evening we raised $227 for End Polio Now. With matching funds from District and the Gates Foundation this resulted in over $1700 being contributed to End Polio Now.

• The Bohemian Rhapsody film night at the Bendigo Cinemas was a very successful event both in terms of being a most enjoyable film and as a Cluster fundraiser. A total of 294 tickets were sold raising $2,940. With matching funds, this equated to a contribution of over $22,000 to End Polio Now. The Rotary Club of Eaglehawk sold 97 tickets.

• The Club was successful in being awarded a two year District Scholarship Grant for a student from a disadvantaged family in Eaglehawk for study at

10

Bendigo Senior Secondary College. The Scholarship has a value of $1000 for each of the final two years of secondary education. District will provide $500 for each of the two years matched equally by the Club.

• Fifteen members of our Club continued their personal commitments to the Centurion program giving at least $100 a year to support the work of the Foundation. It’s great that we have a high proportion of members supporting this program.

• A further four members and three “friends” of our Club are members of the Paul Harris Society (PHS). Each of these members have committed to a minimum contribution to the Foundation of US$1,000 each year, for as long as they are able to do so.

• Twenty-one of our current members have been recognised with a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) Award for their contributions to the Foundation, the Club and the community.

• I continue to encourage members to become Centurions or join the PHS, to support the very important and world changing work of the Foundation. This year the Club, its members and friends contributed approximately $21,500 to the Rotary Foundation.

Sincere thanks for your continuing and generous support.

Rod Hanson, Foundation Director

YOUTH SERVICES REPORT

DIRECTOR: BRIAN GOULD

It is with great delight that I provide a report to Eaglehawk Rotary on my first year as Youth Director. It has been a whirlwind of learning about the plethora of projects and the incredible “jargon” that accompanies these extraordinary opportunities for our Youth through a connection to Rotary.

I have tried to capture some of the key areas that our Club has been active participants or where we have formed partnerships with others to make it happen:

• Eaglehawk Rotary was invited to attend the 2018 Passions and Pathways celebration of student learning on Wednesday, September 19 at the Bendigo Town Hall;

• Rotary Youth Forum held on 14th October 2018 was a wonderful way to learn more about Rotary programs aimed at young people;

• Goldfields Youth Cluster has been a wonderful vehicle for our Region to collaborate and support several initiatives of Rotary particularly with NYSF and RYLA;

• National Youth Science Foundation (NYSF) saw students from BSSC and Catholic College participate in the 2018 program;

• Lennon Logan was sponsored by our Club to participate in the 2018 Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA); and

• Youth Exchange again on a shared basis. It is unclear about the next intake (Northern Hemisphere) in July/August 2019;

12

I would like to take this opportunity to particularly thank Alison Bacon and John Jones for helping me find my feet over the past 12 months. I look forward to the next year with equal enthusiasm and some good understanding of how we can help our leaders of tomorrow to be exposed to Rotary and our programs designed to help them grow.

Brian Gould, Youth Director

Youth Exchange – 2018/2019.

This year, in association with the Rotary Club of Bendigo South, we hosted Luisa Flinkmann from Essen, Germany.

Luisa arrived in July and spent the first six months as a guest of the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk. She was hosted by PP Richard Epskamp and family and then by PP Colin Anderson and family. She has been at school at Girton Grammar and the school is to be commended for their flexibility in allowing her to engage in a wide range of experiences. Luisa has particularly enjoyed the Dahlia and Arts festival, sporting activities and the safari experience.

Youth Exchange has once again become an integral part of our Rotary portfolio and the arrangement with Bendigo South as joint hosts has been particularly positive. While we are unable to confirm host families for the next Rotary year we have committed to providing financial support to Bendigo South to host a student from Norway for 2019/2020. We also have had some tentative offers of host families for the future and so look forward to continuing our involvement with the Youth Exchange program into the future.

Thank you Luisa for enriching our Rotary experience, Auf Wiedersehen.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

DIRECTOR: MICK COSTELLO

The 2018-2019 year was again filled with successful community service activities and events, which were strongly supported by Club members. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank members who have organized activities and everyone in the club who have helped out throughout the year.

The Gazebo

I rate as one of our greatest achievements for the year, the purchase of the Gazebo which is a great advertising tool and widely used.

Camp Getaway

Working bees have continued at Camp Getaway.

Nativity Scene

The nativity scene was set up at the Town Hall on 6th December and re-packed early in the New Year.

Canterbury Carols

Canterbury Carols was held on Sunday 16 December 2018. The Club set up and packed away the stage lighting and decorations just a pity the weather didn’t play ball.

Australia Day

A very successful Australia Day event with barbeque provided by the Club was held on Saturday 26 January at Canterbury Gardens. A good roll-up of Rotarians ensured excellent fellowship and ample food for the large crowd.

Anzac Day Gunfire Breakfast

The Anzac Day Gunfire Breakfast: Our Club and the Eaglehawk Lions Club have again combined our resources to

15

feed all who attended. It is a great opportunity for our clubs to work together for the benefit of our Community.

Dahlia and Arts Festival

A big Thank You to everyone involved it was great to see us continue to support the parade by entering a float. Also a big thank you to Leigh Andrews of Andrews’ Transport Services for the use of the truck. Well done everyone!!

As usual, Eaglehawk Rotary installed and removed the chairs from the sound shell.

Catering BBQ fund raising

Another busy year with our cooks in high demand, Community Christmas BBQ in Bright Street Park, Regular BBQ at Bunnings, Chrysler Car Club BBQ, Remembrance Park Catering, Bendigo Bank Community Bank Day, Swap Meet Catering, Great Aussie Camping Swap Meet Catering and other events.

Other Events

These included the Official Opening of the Eaglehawk PlaySpace, Stupa car parking on 2 occasions, Cooking of Donuts at Easter (could be a new trend) just to name a few.

Cobar Drought Relief Visit

Leon Scott will give a report on our Drought Relief Program but as part of this we did a visit to Cobar and Loath assisting the Royal Flying Doctor Service with a Community Clinic for the local Farming Community and saw the good work firsthand the Cobar Rotary Club are doing.

I would again like to take this opportunity to thank all the members of Eaglehawk Rotary Club for all the community work they have done not only this year but in their Rotary Lives, Thanks again.

DROUGHT RELIEF PROJECT TO THE COBAR AREA

Committee.

Eaglehawk Rotarians, Alison Bacon, Gary Frank, Gordon McKern, John Jones, Ron Payne and Leon Scott. Castlemaine Rotarians, Lyndal and Gary McClure.

The Rotary Club of Eaglehawk launched a massive humanitarian drought relief project to assist the people of the Cobar NSW region. Together with their partners, the Rotary Clubs of Castlemaine and Cobar, the following achievements were accomplished:

In excess of $170,000.00 was raised which included a District 9800 grant in February of $80,000 and in June, a further grant of $5,000.

Freight costs totalling $50,000 were paid by the NSW Government’s Rural Assistance Authority for the hay deliveries. Other Club fundraising and donations from Eaglehawk Rotarians and friends raised $30,000, together with a truckload of in-kind goods which were distributed through Cobar Rotary.

The project included,

Delivery of 12 semi-trailer loads of quality Victorian hay to the various farmers on the 5 major roads leading out of Cobar.

Construction and delivery of a trailer mounted Reverse Osmosis Desalination plant capable of producing 25000 litres of drinking water per day.

Donation of $5,000 worth of vouchers in the form of Cobar Quids to be spent with the local traders.

Support to the Royal Flying Doctor Service with a donation of $1500 as well as supplying labour to cater for in excess of 100 families and RFDS staff during a wellness weekend

17

They conducted at Louth NSW. 6 members from Eaglehawk, 4 from Castlemaine and 1 from Bendigo Sandhurst supplied all meals over the 2½ days. RFDS had specialists, dentists, doctors, podiatrists, masseurs, hair dressers and other support staff all offering free service and fellowship to the locals. People came from 150 km away, but up there that is still local.

Bob & Pam Mason donated a beautiful Crystal Cabinet and other prizes for a raffle which raised significant funds.

Members manned several Bunning’s BBQs with proceeds supporting the drought relief program.

Over the last 6 months, 20 Rotarians and partners have made 3 visits to Cobar joining with the Cobar Rotary members in fellowship and assisting the local people to realise that someone they don’t know, DOES CARE.

PP Leon Scott OAM Project Coordinator

Object of Rotary

The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of Service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to foster and encourage:

First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.

Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society.

Third: The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business and community life.

Fourth: The advancement of international understanding and goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.

GREAT AUSSIE CAMPING SWAP MEET ANNUAL REPORT 2019

After a successful inaugural Swap Meet, the Board endorsed the continuation of this initiative for 2019 to again be held at Malone Recreation Reserve in Marong.

There is now a much better understanding of the resources and actions needed in the lead up to the Event as well as the personnel needed over 4 days to cover the “bumping in on Thursday to bumping out on the Sunday afternoon”.

This unique Event has some challenges particularly around “Mother Nature” being unkind for the second year with an arctic blast and very strong winds all day on Saturday. Rotary Volunteers were strong on the big Fencing and Stallholder construction day that enabled a smoother start to the Saturday for both the stallholders and customers.

The traditional BBQ was appreciated by everyone in attendance as it provided sustenance to our Club Members, Stallholders and the general public. The provision of a Mobile Coffee Van was a success with the operator happy with sales and the 10% contribution to our Club for the use of one of the sites.

This year there was a continuation of the traditional media advertising (Radio MMM and social media) coupled with some additional radio interviews. Thanks to VicRoads we were able to erect signs on the Highway network promoting our event in the lead up to the weekend.

The 2019 Dahlia and Arts Festival was again an opportunity to promote both Rotary and the GACSM. Our commitment to the “Cobar Drought Relief” underpinned our Float. We were able to distribute pamphlets to the hundreds of people lining the Parade route to further promote the event to our local community.

19

Entry fee was the same as 2018 however it incorporated a “free $1 ticket” to our special raffle. This enabled us to get some post code data on where people were coming from to assist with more strategic Marketing in 2020.

A review is currently underway on the GACSM that is exploring potential new site at the Showgrounds. There is an opportunity to “take over” the Historic Tractor & Machinery event. This will be decided in the near future in light of the “weather factor” in both years that negatively impacted on public attendance. It also offers a potential reduction in the

number of Rotary Members needed in the set up through to conclusion – importantly also reduce security concerns.

Finally, I want to thank and acknowledge the work of a large contingent of Rotarians who played a role over the past year in nurturing this great initiative for our Club.

Brian Gould, Project Manager - GACSM

ROTARY BOOK STORE

Now in its fifth year,  the shop  continues to trade  successfully. Generous donations keep the shelves well stocked . Our donors are grateful to have a place to pass on their books knowing  these  books will not only find new homes but raise money for Rotary.

A special opening on a Friday 10.00 am - 7.00 pm followed by  a Happy Hour thanks to Ann Scott, combined with additional sales at the camping swap  meet  raised  $700.00  for the Cobar drought relief.

Thank you to the helpers for assistance and advice. Special thanks to my family.

CALIFORNIA GULLY MECHANICS INSTITUTE

Home of the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk

Our ‘Mechanics’ is a wonderful facility and as reported last year, is full of potential as an asset available for community use. Pleasingly we have continued to provide regular user groups with a great facility that is meeting their needs as well as an increase in the casual hires for family celebrations such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries and reunions. Other local Rotary Clubs have taken advantage of the facility and are always envious of our great ‘home’.

The Stroke Association of Victoria has increased their presence with a co-ordinator working from the office 4 days a week. This program is just getting traction in the community so we anticipate seeing more activity in the months to come.

The installation of the Solar Panels late in 2018 through a Federal Government initiative and facilitated by the City of Greater Bendigo will have benefits for the club into the future. Not only in terms of a cost saving measure but is also indicative of a need for environmental awareness.

The Board have acknowledged and are addressing the need for the facility’s heating and cooling to be upgraded along with the need to look to the replacement of the floor coverings in the main hall, all with a view to further maximise potential hiring opportunities.

Special thanks go to the Rotarians who have undertaken the necessary courses and have achieved their RSA qualifications. These Rotarians form a band of willing workers weekly at our own club meetings but are also called upon regularly for events at the facility.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE

DIRECTOR: JOHN JONES

International projects have continued to be a priority for the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk for this Rotary year. Our major fundraising project was again the Monster Christmas Raffle and I am indebted to Rtn. Leon McGlashan for his enthusiastic support and to PP Leon Scott for assisting with the moving of the stocking between locations. The stocking resulted in a net profit in excess of $16,000. As this was a joint project with community service $5000 was donated to our drought relief project.

Thailand and Timor Leste were the primary areas of focus for this year. We have continued to support Khun Toy and the HHN Foundation and Pang’s program supporting young people after they leave the homes. PP Howard Osborne and his family enjoyed a wonderful visit to Pattaya in December to celebrate Christmas with staff and children at the Orphanage and to catch up with graduates from the ROSE program.

We have now funded four students from Timor Leste for full scholarships at UNTL, Dili. This year, in addition, we have funded ten secondary school students so that they can continue their secondary education in Maubisse. Our practical support was also invaluable and I am indebted to those Rotarians who helped with the packing of containers with knitted goods, furniture and other equipment for shipment to Timor Leste. The support of Judite and Mario (RAWCS) in Dili in arranging collection of the containers and distribution of goods is greatly appreciated.

A highlight for the club was a visit from Dr. Inda Dias, the dentist based in Maubisse. We provided $1500 to support her attendance at the Australian Dental Association conference in Adelaide and she spent time in Bendigo after the conference.

22

Her visit to the club, with Dr. Blanche Tsetong and Rod Flavell (Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee), provided an insight into her work in Maubisse. Dr. Inda trained in the Philippines but had not been able to access professional development since then and so the experience proved invaluable. She also spent time with the dental school at LaTrobe (Bendigo) to supplement her experiences.

With respect to the forthcoming year we will continue to support tertiary scholarships as funding has been provided for five students. We are investigating an opportunity for some of our students approaching graduation to come to Bendigo for some work experience with Bendigo Health.

We also plan to host a graduate from Thailand (Teeraphat) for up to three months to support her with vocational experience and her proficiency with English.

I would like to express my appreciation to President Alison, the Board and members for their enthusiastic support of international programs and look forward to continuing in the role in 2019/20.

Director, International Service.
